  • She was baptized on 27 December 1730 at Dutch Reformed Church, Hackensack, Bergen Co., New Jersey, sponsors Joannes Peek, Maria DeMarest.3

  • Another source says Hannah Brouwer died in 1822 at Shawangunk, Ulster Co., New York, at the home of son Cornelius Turner.5,6
  • Also known as Nauchy.7
  • She was baptized as Annaetjen daughter of Cornelius Brouwer and Maria Raffel.3
  • She is decribed as the heir in law (of one twentieth part of a mill seat on the Bronx River) to Nicholas Brouwer (d.1749) and wife of Edmund Turner (d.1805). Hannah was allegedly insane from (at least) 1801 until her death in 1822. She left several children and grandchildren, one of her surviving children was Jemima Thorp (d.1832) mother of Cornelius D. Thorp and married to Peter Thorp when nineteen years of age. Peter died in 1832, and Jemima died in 1842.8
  • She is named in her husband's will on 30 June 1806 to receive all her husband's real estate, together with one feather bed and bedding. (No mention of her mental condition).9
  • In April 1851, Elizabeth Caywood, daughter of Hannah (Nauchy) Turner, gave testimony as to the ancestry of her mother. Elizabeth states that her mother, Hannah, also known as Nauchy, was the only child of Cornelius Brower and Molly De Roselle. Hannah was born in Tuckahoe, Westchester Co., N.Y., about 1730. She married Edmund Turner at Tuckahoe at age 19, and died at Shawangunk in 1816. Edmund Turner had died at Plattekill in Ulster County, prior to Hannah.
Elizabeth further states that Cornelius was the son of Nicholas and Yannetje Brower, both resided at Bronx River, Westchester Co., N.Y. Cornelius died about 1733 at Bronx River.
Elizabeth states that the family tradition named eight children of Nicholas and Yannetje Brower: Adolphus, Nicholas, Cornelius, Nazareth, Jenny, Hannah, Lana, and Anna. She understood that Nicholas was a millwright. She thinks that Nicholas went to North Carolina after the Revolution (this cannot be the first Nicholas as he was certainly deceased).
Mary (De Roselle) Brower survived her husband, Cornelius, and married second, David Demarest (lists five children).7

She found a summary of the case at the Wake Forest University Law Library: 57 U.S. 247, 16 How 247 (1853). She wrote to the Supreme Court and received basic information on the case and the suggestion to contact the U.S. Court for Southern District of N.Y. for supporting evidence. Eventually she received 91 pages from the file. The suit commenced in 1850 and went on to the Supreme Court in 1853. So much for some background. I do not have the 91 pages of evidence but my correspondent did provide some abstracted data, most of which pertains to the family and descendants of Hannah Brouwer, b. 1730, Tuckahoe, NY. d. 1822, mar. ca. 1749, Edmund Turner, b. ca. 1728, d. 1805. That they were the parents of Jemima Turner, that Jemima Turner and Cornelius D. Thorp were the parents of Peter Thorp. Joseph went to live with his grandparents Edmund and Hannah Turner when he was 15, and lived with them for six or seven years. • Three papers dated 2, 3, and 9 Jan. 1737/38, at Albany, concerning the same property which the "Relict of Hendrick Brouwer late of Schenectady" makes over to her children: Benjamin Van Vleck, Peter Brouwer, Cornelius Brouwer, Hendrick Brouwer and John Dellemont (son-in-law) husband of Eva, a wever at Schenectady.6
  • "Hendrick Brouwer owned a lot on the east side of church street, beginning at a point 108 feet north from the church lot and extending probably to Front street, and through his wife came into possession of one quater of hindmost lot No. 8, which she inherited from her father. He left six sons and two daughters, one of whom, Jacob, born 1700, an Indian trader, was barbarously murdered at the falls on the Oswego river in the spring of 1730, by an Onondaga Indian. In 1724 Mrs. Brouwer was also called an Indian trader."13

Hendrick Brouwer

b. circa 1702
  • Hendrick Brouwer was born circa 1702 (assuming at least age 25 in 1727, but possibly earlier, perhaps in the decade of 1690-1700).
  • He married Rachel Bon before 1727.1
  • Also known as Henry Brewis.2
  • Hendrick is possibly a son of Pieter Jansz Brouwer and Annatje Jans. The tentative placement is based soley on the place and time of the baptism of his daughter Sara. A Hendrick Brewer witnessed the will of Johannes Luyster (3 Aug 1766), who was a son of Lucretia Brouwer and Johannes Luyster. However, the witnessing of a will does not necessarily indicate a family relationship (wills are often witnessed by unrelated individuals), and the Hendrick who witnessed the will of Johannes Luyster may be the Hendrick Brewer/Brower (b. 1735), son of Johannes Brouwer and Helena Van Cleef. As of now Hendrick does not have an obvious fit within the families descended from Adam Brouwer. Additional evidence needed before a placement can be finalized.
