Hester Brouwer1

b. 28 October 1761, d. before 11 August 1784
  • Hester Brouwer was baptized on 28 October 1761 at Dutch Reformed Church, Hackensack, Bergen Co., New Jersey, sponsors David Demarest, Hester, his wife.2
  • She possibly died before 11 August 1784 as she is not named in her father's will.
  • Also known as Esther Brouwer.3
  • Hoffman, in his manuscript notes, states that Hester Brouwer, daughter of Jacob Brouwer and Jannetje Van der Beek, baptized 28 Oct 1761, married Cornelius van Saan on 28 May 1791. Cornelius stated as being the son of Cornelius van Saan and Johanna Begon, bpt. 19 Sep 1759. Cites Nelson, History of Patterson. This, however, may not be correct. Hester is not named in her father's will of 1784, and a witness for the baptism of Polly, daughter of Cornelius Van Zaan and Hester Brouwer (1792) was Bregje Brouwer the wife of Gilliam Demorest (the other witness was Jan Brouwer). The Hester Brouwer who married Cornelius Van Zaan (Van Saan) is more likely a daughter of Jan Brouwer and Rachel Braakelen.

Isaac Brouwer1

b. 12 January 1744, d. 24 December 1813
  • Isaac Brouwer was born on 12 January 1744 (based on age at death, g.s.). No record of baptism is found in Hackensack or Schraalenburgh. Paramus baptisms for the years 1744 to 1748 are missing.3
  • He married Mary Knapp at Reformed Dutch Church, New York City, New York, on 21 April 1767 (banns 21 Apr 1767) "Isaac Brouwer & Mary Knapp."1
  • Isaac Brouwer married second Sarah.4
  • Isaac Brouwer died on 24 December 1813; "69-11-12."3
  • He was buried at Old Dutch Burying Ground of Sleepy Hollow, Sleepy Hollow, Westchester Co., New York.5
  • Also known as Isaac Brower.5
  • His will was dated on 12 December 1813 at Westchester Co., New York, Isaac Brower of the Town of Mount Pleasant in the County of Westchester and State of New York being weak in body but in sound mind. To my beloved wife Sarah Brower all my household furniture of what ever description it may be to her only use benefit and behold forever excepting one bed and curtains and one beudeau in the entry room and one floor carpet in the parlour which said articles I give to my daughter Rachel the wife of William Reton or to her heirs. To grandson Isaac Reton, two hundred and fifty dollars and my silver watch, or to his heirs. To grandson Isaac Batchler, two hundred and fifty dollars or to his heirs. To daughter Susannah, wife of Daniel Van Wart or his heirs, my negro boy Harry. Instructs that the remainder of the estate be sold and the money arising from the sale together with money already out at interest to be divided into equal parts with one equal third part to go to daughter Susannah, wife of Daniel Van Wart, one equal third part to son Benjamin Brower or his heirs, and one equal third part to daughter Mary, the wife of John Batcheler or to her heirs. Appoints "my son in law and my hrandson Issac Reton," executors. Witnesses: George Combs, Archibald Read, Sarah Read. Proved 27 Dec 1813.4
  • Isaac Reton was named in his grandfather Isaac Brouwer's will on 12 December 1813; Isaac Reton is appointed an executor.4
  • Isaac Batchelor was named in his grandfather Isaac Brouwer's will on 12 December 1813.4
  • The Old Dutch Burying Ground of Sleepy Hollow calls Isaac Brower, "probably a son of Johannis (Brower) and Elizabeth Concklie." Hoffman in his "Brouwer Beginnings" manuscript notes, supposes Isaac as a son of Isaac Brouwer and Rachel Demarest. The later is more likely.2,5

Jacob Brouwer1,2,3

b. circa 1655, d. before 20 December 1706
  • Jacob Brouwer was born circa 1655 at Gowanus, Long Island, the date being that what is generally accepted, however, he may have been born a bit earlier. As Jacob, he was named for his maternal grandfather, which would traditionally imply that he was second son born to his parents. If this were the case, Jacob may have been born in 1647 or 1648.
  • He married Annetje Bogardus, daughter of Willem Bogardus and Wynnetje Sybrants, at Brooklyn, Kings Co., Long Island, New York, on 29 January 1682 (banns 7 Jan 1682, Flatbush; 8 Jan 1682, New York).4,5
  • Jacob Brouwer died before 20 December 1706; when his wife, "Annitie Brower," appears on the Brooklyn town assessment list with 26 acres.6
  • Also known as Jacobus Brouwer.5
  • Also known as Jakop Brouwer.7
  • Named for his maternal grandfather Jacob Verdon, Jacob is said to have been born ca. 1655 at Gowanus (no baptism record has been found), Jacob appears to have lived his entire life at Gowanus and was deceased by Dec. 1706. He married Annetje Bogardus, the granddaughter of Dom. Everardus Bogardus and his wife, the famous Anneke Jans, whose supossed fortune in Manhattan property has led many Brouwer descendants and want-to-be descendants to claim and publish inaccurate and false lines of ancestry.
  • , Gerrit Kroesen was taxed in Brooklyn in 1675 and 1676 for land between the home lots of Jacob Brouwer and Volkert Hendircksen Bries.8
  • He appeared on the assessment list of at Breukelen, Long Island, in September 1676 assessed at 18, with 1 poll.9
  • He appeared on the assessment list of at Brooklyn, Kings Co., New York, on 26 September 1683 as Jacob Brouwer with 2 cows, 1 cow of 2 yrs., and 6 morgens of land and valley. Assessed at £42.10.10
  • He took the Oath of Allegiance in September 1687 at Brooklyn, Kings Co., New York, as "Jacob brouwer, native."11
  • Jacob is named in his father's will dated 22 Jan 1691/92, for his disobedience he is to receive "not a penny" and his share is devised to his children.12
  • Jacob Brouwer's lands at Gowanus are mentioned in a "Division of Common lands & woods into three parts, at a towne meeting held Febr. 25th, 1692/3 att Brooklyn, in manner following, I - All the lands and woods after Bedford & Cripplebush over the hills to the path of New Lotts shall be long to the inhabitants & free holders of Gowanus beginning from Jacob Brower and soe to the uttermost bounds of the limits of New Utrecht."13
  • He appeared on the census in 1698 at Brooklyn, Kings Co., New York, as Jacob Brouwer, with a family of 1 man, 1 woman, and 6 children. Recorded between Mighiel hanse Bergen and Adam Brouwer.14
  • On 17 Oct 1704, "William Brower Junr. son of Jacob Brower of Brookland, doth voluntarily and of his own free will and accord by and with the consent of his parents put himself apprentice to Stephen Bedent of Broockland, feltmaker, to serve him from the 17th day of October 1704 till the full term of four years." Jacob Brower, William Brower and Stephen Bedent all sign by their marks.15
  • It is assumed that Jacob was not yet 21 years of age in 1675, as he did not pay a poll tax that year. In Sep 1676 he was living with his father and did pay a poll tax in that year. There is no record of his baptism in either the New York, Brooklyn or Flatbush churchs. On their marriage record it is stated that, Jacob was born in Gowanus, and Annetje was born in New York. He took the oath of allegiance as a native and resident of Breukelen in 1687, and is mentioned again as a resident of Breukelen on the 1698 with a family of 1 male, 1 female, and 6 children, his name being listed just above that of his father Adam Brouwer on the census. By virtue of his marriage, the children of Jacob Brouwer, and therefore their descendants can trace their ancestry to the renowned Anneke Jans, the grandmother of Jacob's wife. According to Hoffman (TAG 24:23), there are many lines of descent from Jacob Brouwer and Annetje Bogardus that do not hold up under close examination. "Teunis Bergen and many others, following his assertions, have ascribed children or descendants to Jacob who are not evident from the authentic records and as a matter of fact can be shown to belong to other branches of the family. Based on family records, three children, whose official records can not be found, have been ascribed to Jacob and his wife, namely: Jonas, born in 1691, Jan, born in 1692, and Adolph, born Oct. 5, 1693 (NYG&BR 1925:232; 1926:82-83; 1928:294-5; April issue; Brouwer notes in the Hill Manuscript at the N.Y. Gen. and Biog. Society). Of Adolph it has now been proven that he was a son of Nicolaes Brouwer (one of Jacob's brothers); of the other two there is no evidence that such sons ever existed. This conclusion would also follow from the fact that in 1698 Jacob was shown to be father of six children then living. This checks with the number of children whose baptisms were recorded previous to that date and who were all alive in that year." As has been demonstrated from the above, historically there has been a great deal of confusion and erroneous claims regarding the descendants of Jacob Brouwer and Annetje Bogardus. An account and explanation of unproven lines of descent from Annetje' grandmother, Anneke Jans, written by William B. Bogardus, can be viewed at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~ghosthunter/Anneke/page6.htm.
  • John Brouwn is claimed as a son of Jacob Brouwer John is placed as a son of Jacob Brouwer and Annetje Bogardus in Dear Cousin...(1996), but no direct evidence for this placement exists. John is consistently recorded as John "BROUWN," in what few records are found for him (his marriage, baptism of daughter Marritje, and his wife is called Hannah Brouwn at her remarriage). His placement in this family has to be suspect.

Not only his sister married there Nicholas Bovy, but Jacob's first son was named Petrus and his second daughter Nelletje, the names of Jacob's father and mother. • Jacobus Brouwer is named as a brother-in-law in the will of Rachel Smith, dated 17 Sep 1757.24
  • Hoffman (TAG 24:24) sates that some give his birthdate as 3 Oct 1684, but that seems to be a long time between birth date and baptism for this time and community. Jacob became a church member at NYDR on 21 Nov. 1743, on confession of faith. He is recorded, as of Kings County, when enlisted in the militia in 1715. He is mentioned along with Evrard and Sybrandt Brouwer in a deed dated 11 Feb 1717 in Brooklyn. The children of Jacob Brouwer are mentioned in the will of Rachel Smith, who was a sister of Petronella la Montagne, dated 17 Sep 1757. She calls Jacob Brouwer her brother-in-law and names his children Jacob, John, Everhardus, and Abraham. To the later she leaves her sermon book. Bergen, in his "Bergen Genealogy" also names a fifth son Cornelis Brouwer, supposedly b. 9 Nov 1730. This statement has been followed by others and is included in DAR Lineage Book 61:158, which states that he died in 1805, served in Capt. Brouwer's Company, and married Mary Archer (b. 21 Apr, 1733) of the well known Archer family of Westchester County, New York. Hoffman disputes those claims, stating that he has found no evidence or records to show that Cornelis is a son of this Jacob, and although he (in 1947) has not been able to place Cornelis anywhere within this Brouwer ancestry, he definetly does not believe that he belongs in the family of Jacob and Petronella. It is possible that among their children was Catharina Brouwer, who married Jacob Tiederman, as this couple acted as sponsors for the la Montagne family.

Jacob Brouwer1

b. 7 January 1721/22, d. 1806
  • Jacob Brouwer was baptized on 7 January 1721/22 at Dutch Reformed Church, Hackensack, Bergen Co., New Jersey, sponsors Andries Lubbertse Westervelt, Dirckje Verdon, his wife.2
  • He married Elsye Hitchcock at Reformed Dutch Church, New York City, New York, on 3 May 1747 (banns 2 May 1747).3
  • Jacob Brouwer died in 1806 at Wappingers Falls, Dutchess Co., New York.4
  • He witnessed the baptism of Jannetje Brouwer , daughter of Nicholas Brouwer and Mary Dutcher, on 28 April 1745 at First Reformed Dutch Church, Fishkill, Dutchess Co., New York, (sponsors Jacob Brouwer, Jannetje Brouwer).5
  • Jacob is covered in "Brouwer Beginnings" (TAG 24:167) by Hoffman who states "according to DAR lineage books he was a private in the N.Y. Militia," Col. James Drake's regiment. This Jacob did not marry Jannetje Vanderbeek, as is given in NYG&BR, vol.64 (Jacob, son of Abraham, Pieter, Adam) married her. Jacob was living first at Tappan where he was a shoemaker. There are seven known children of this couple (Jacob and Elsye Hitchcock) two baptized at Tappan, one at New Hackensack, and three at Fishkill. It is possible that there were more children, since nine years elapsed between their marriage date and the birth of their first child found on record. Among the sponsors at the baptisms of the children are Jan Gesner and his wife, Isaac Brouwer and Jacobmine Kwakkenbos, Cornelis Brouwer and Alida Aersse; and the additional fact that he had a son Adolf proves without a doubt that he belongs here, and provides an additional tie-up between the other children of Adolph.4,6
  • Jacob bought land from his brother Nicholas in Wappingers Falls, New York.7
  • Jacob Brewer is recorded on the tax list at Rombout Precinct, Dutchess Co., New York in the years 1765-1775, 1777-1779.8
  • Jacob Brouwer was subscribed to a membership in the at Reformed Dutch Church, New Hackensack, Dutchess Co., New York, on 31 October 1765 at 1-0-0.9
  • Although it is difficult to determine with certainty with pre-1850 census records just exactly who each record pertains to, we can still make educated guesses. It is known that Jacob bought land of his brother Nicholas in Wappinger Falls, New York. The census records of 1800, show a Jacob Brewer living in Fishkill, Dutchess Co., New York (Fishkill being very near to Wappinger Falls) with a family of 1 male under 10, 1 male 10-15, 1 male 26-45, 1 male over 45, 3 females under 10, 1 female 10-15, 2 females 26-45, 1 female over 45. The description of this family could lead one to believe that it may describe an older couple with the family of one of their children living with them. Also recorded in Fishkill in 1800 are Cornelis Brewer (age 26-44), possibly Jacob's son, and William Brewer (26-44), possibly son of Jacob's brother Nicholas, and Nicholas Brewer (age over 45), also possibly the son of brother Nicholas.10
  • William Brower is claimed as a son of Jacob Brouwer.11

Bogardus Collection. The ancestry shown for Jacob's father, Isaac Brouwer is incorrect as stated in the collection's record (it follows a long disproved line back to Anneke Jans). The information regarding Jacob's descendants, however, appears to be possibly correct, and shows that Jacob was married twice, first to Agnes Brower and second to Sarah Ellsworth (herself a widow although this is not stated in the collection's record).
Further proof of the relationships shown here is desired.

In 1790 a Jacob Brouwer in enumerated on the U.S. census in Clinton, Dutchess Co., New York with a family of 1-1-1, which would describe the family of Jacob Brouwer and Abigail Manning at that time. On the same census sheet are recorded, Jacob Brouwer's (son of Nicholas) step-father, Stephen Callow, as well as Charles Manning, John Manning, John Manning Jr., Thomas Manning, and Joshua Manning, i.e. a group of related Mannings that Abigail Manning may certainly belong to. Additional evidence is needed, but this connection appears to be probable.
  • Much of the information regarding the descendants of Jacob Brouwer and Abigail Manning was supplied by Lilly Martin, a direct descendant of Jacob Brouwer and Abigail Manning.4
