John Brouwer

b. circa 1772, d. October 1863
  • John Brouwer was born circa 1772 at New York.2
  • He married Elizabeth Yerxa, daughter of John Yerxa and Catherine Gerow, circa 1793.3,4
  • John Brouwer died in October 1863 at Upper Keswick, York Co., New Brunswick, Canada.2
  • Also known as John Brewer.2,1
  • Also known as Johannis Brewer.3
  • He appeared on the census in 1851 at Douglas, York Co., New Brunswick, Canada, as John Brewer, age given as 77, with wife Elizabeth and son Cornelius.5
  • In A Dutch English Odessy (1997) Floyd I. Brewer bases his case that the John Brewer, b. 4 Aug 1774 to Jacob Brewer and Abigail Yerks was the same John Brewer who went to Canada in the late 1700's on (1) he married a member of the Jurckse family, both families were common in Greenburgh throughout the 1700s and there were other marriages between the two families, and (2) John Brewer's age in 1851 on the Canadian census places his birth date as 1774 in the United States, about the same time that Jacob and Abigail (Yerks) Brouwer had a son named John baptized at Sleepy Hollow, New York. Since the publication of his book, other researchers, among them William Bogardus, had convinced Floyd Brewer that this parentage for John is in error. Presently, it is my opinion that the most probable parentage for John is Adolphus Brouwer and Elizabeth Lassing, but complete conclusive evidence is still lacking, and it is possible that John is the eldest son of Adolf Brewer (shown as John's brother here) and his wife Mary Allen (perhaps named for Mary's father John Allen). This is one of those cases that may never be solved with certainty.6,1
  • John Brouwer and Adolf Brouwer, are both represented by direct descendants who have participated in the Brewer DNA Project. John Brewer is represented by kit #75657, and Adolf Brewer is represented by kit #81173. The results show identical matches on twelve markers, which implies a very high probability that John and Adolf Brewer are brothers.7

(unknown address) to Chris Chester, Perry Brewer, Karen Sims and Lilly Martin, 22 Nov 2006, "The professional genealogist that Floyd Brewer first employed for determining his ancestry back to Adam BROUWER was Florence A. Christoph of Selkirk, NY. She is the one that convinced him of his descent from Matthys BROUWER, son of Adam - - and, I will admit, I first thought that she might be correct but before the book was published Floyd and I were convinced that she was wrong. Unfortunately, it had already gone to press. Even before he employed Florence, Floyd had been in contact with several others, including Paul Brewer of New Brunswick and John Brewer of New Zealand (not in N.B. but "down under") (now deceased - who visited me here in Wilmington). John had even been to England searching records there and we all had discussed the most probable descent from Nicholas and then his son Adolph, b. 1693, etc. There were many circumstantial bits of evidence but there were also incongruities that we could never actually come to an assurance that this suggested ancestry was correct. I had not been in direct contact with Paul at this time - - but Floyd kept me pretty well abreast of most of the data he was receiving. Paul is recognized in the book, as I am also, as "Genealogical Consultants". I have scores of summaries, bits of evidence, land extracts, old letters, and professional notes but in spite of it all, I was never able to put it all together without some doubt. I don't really have time to go through it all again but am still very interested in the suggested family connections that are periodically presented.
After the book was published, Floyd then employed a second professional genealogist, Glenna Hill of Ocean Grove, NJ and I have some of her notes and data also. Although never finally accepted or published, her final conclusion was that John Brewer, b. ca. 1774, who married Elizabeth YERXA, ca. 1793, was the son of Adolph BROWER (1750- ) of Athens, NY, Burton and New Zealand, N.B., who married Mary ALLEN in Hudson, N.Y. prior to 1773; and this Adolph was the son of Adolph BROUWER (1725- ), of Hackensack, NJ, Wappingers Falls, NY and Athens, NY, who married Elizabeth LASSING in 1749; and this Adolph was the son of Adolph BROUWER (1693-1742), who married Jannetje VERDON; Adolph the son of Nicholas and Nicholas the son of Adam BROUWER BERCHOVEN.
I think Glenna Hill was perhaps on the right track but I'm not absolutely convinced that she was correct. In any event. I really do believe that John BREWER, b. ca. 1774, was descended from Adam, Nicholas and Adolph, b. 1693". Hereinafter cited as "Wm. Bogardus, e-mail, 11-20-2006."

"John Brewer grew up in the town of Greenburgh (Hawthorne) Westchester Co., New York, then moved to New Zealand, New Brunswick, Canada where he was a farmer and raised fifteen children. He settled in the New York/New Jersey Volunteers Block in New Zealand, New Brunswick, near his relation Adolphus Brewer who went to New Brunswick with his wife and two children in 1783 with a large group of Loyalists. John Brewer bought land in New Zealand by 1803." These conclusions by Floyd Brewer are in fact incorrect. John's most probable parents lived in Dutchess Co., New York and then in Bergen Co., New Jersey, at least for a time, prior to retreating to New York City after the outbreak of the American Revolution. John did find his way to York Co., New Brunswick and the Adolf Brewer and Cornelius Brewer also found there are most likely his brothers. Jurrie Brouwer

b. circa 1745, d. before February 1797
  • Jurrie Brouwer was born circa 1745 if he is a son of Abraham Brouwer and Barbara Stellingwerf (probably earlier if he is not).
  • He married Maria Tideman before 1764.1
  • Jurrie Brouwer died before February 1797; if he is a son of Abraham Brouwer, who wrote is will in Feb 1797, which does not name a son.
  • Also known as Jeremiah.
  • Possible son of Abraham Brouwer. He is placed here in light of the fact that Abraham Brouwer and his wife Maria Losee stood as sponsors for Jurrie's only known child, named Abraham (1764). Jurrie, or Jeremiah, is not named in Abraham Brouwer's will, however, the fact that no other children have been identified as his may indicate that he died early on.

Jury Brouwer1

b. between 1740 and 1748, d. before 1818
  • Jury Brouwer was probably born between 1740 and 1748 at Gowanus, Kings Co., Long Island, New York, (under age in 1755, and apparently younger than his brother Abraham).
  • He married by license dated on 28 December 1763 at New York Anna Elsworth, daughter of Willem Elsworth and Rebecca Stillwell.2
  • Jury Brouwer is said to have married Annatie Bennet by Ledley (NYGBR 95:159) who cites the fact that Annatie's brother, Winant, mentioned his "brother-in-law" Jeremiah Brower in his will of 1802. However, the brother-in-law Jeremiah Brower who Winant Bennet was likely refering to, was a husband of his wife's sister. It is not likely that Annatie Bennet married Jeremiah Brower.3
  • Jury Brouwer died before 1818.4
  • Also known as Jeremiah Brouwer.5
  • Also known as Jeremiah Brower.
  • He was named in his father's will dated on 29 September 1755 called under age.6

Charity Stillwell being the second wife of Jeury Brouwer, Sr. Jeury died before Charity, thus she was his widow when she eventually died.
Notice that she Wills a black velvet cloak to CHARITY TEDENUM. I wiull identify this lady as Charity Brower, d/o Jeremiah Brower and Mary TIDEMON. The 1818 congressional petition identifies her as Charity Tidemon. The relaitionship between the lady making out the Will, and the younger lady to recieve the claok is this: The older lady would be her Father's Uncle's second wife. This is not a close relationship, but perhaps the younger girl had been kind to the old lady, something of that sort.". Hereinafter cited as "L. Martin e-mail 1-8-2007."
