b. 11 June 1714, d. 17 October 1777

  • He married first at Dutch Reformed Church, Fishkill, Dutchess Co., New York, on 18 June 1743 Mary Dutcher, daughter of David de Duyster and Elizabeth Davenport.4
  • Nicholas Brouwer married second at First Reformed Dutch Church, Poughkeepsie, Dutchess Co., New York, on 31 March 1765 Sarah Drake, daughter of William Drake and Elizabeth Taylor, (banns dated 18 Mar 1765).5,6,7
  • Nicholas Brouwer died on 17 October 1777 at Albany, Albany Co., New York.8
  • His estate was probated on 10 June 1778 at Albany, Albany Co., New York; Inventory of the estate was taken on two dates, 2 Jul and 3 Jul 1778, both times by John van Sicklen and Benjamin Bloom. Included in the inventory was 1 "Duch Bible," 1 "Duch Question Book," 1 "Duch Lairment Book," 2 "Duch" Books, 1 English Book, many tools and other household effects. There was also 1 Negro woman, and 1 Negro man named Johanes. There were bonds of W. Conklin, Elisha Covort, and Jacob Stag. Apparently an account of the inventory was reopened in 1797. On 15 Apr 1797, "Joshua Manning and Lena his wife which said Lena is a daughter and legatee of Nicholas Brower late of the city of Albany, yeoman, deceased," petitioned the Court in Albany claiming that, "Sarah Brower, Nicholas Brower, and Henry Bogart executors of the last will and testament of the said Nicholas Brower, have hitherto neglected to render an inventory and account of the estate of the said Nicholas Brower." In response the inventory and account was filed on 10 Aug 1797 by Nicholas Brower, and included payments to Cornelius Brower, legacy; Jane Conklin, legacy; mother for family support. Debts were paid in Feb 1782 to Cornelius Brower and to Everardus Brower. A bond, by will went to Nicholas Brower; the Negro John, by will went to David Brower; the Negro "wench" Hannah, to the widow; the Negro Peter "ran away with the British." (NY Wills B:120).9,10,11
  • Also known as Nicholas Brewer.12
  • Surname is also spelled Brower.
  • In his published treatment of Adolphus Brouwer, William J. Hoffman came to the conclusion that Adolphus had been married twice, that Jannetje Verdon was his second wife and mother of all of Adolphus' children with the exception of the eldest son, Nicholas. Hoffman was of the opinion that Nicholas' mother was a first wife whose identity has not been discovered. He notes the five year gap between Adolphus' oldest two children and cites the "Hill Manuscript" (an otherwise very much flawed document) as reasons for his opinion. I have found no evidence or reason to suspect that Nicholas' mother was anyone other than Jannetje Verdon. Other then the five year gap between Nicholas and his next oldest sibling (Jannetje b. 1719) there is no clear reason to suspect that Nicholas was born of a mother other than Jannetje Verdon.
  • He witnessed the baptism of Lena Brouwer , daughter of Adolphus Brouwer and Jannetje Jacobse Verdon, on 11 February 1739 at Dutch Reformed Church, Schraalenburgh, Bergen Co., New Jersey, (sponsors Niclaes Brouwer and Jannetje Furman (sic, read Truman), sister).13
  • From a private collection of Brower family documents: "Pattant grant under James the 2nd in the year 1685 by Thomas Dongan, Governor of the Colony of New York, for 16 miles square, beginning at the foot of the highlands, running North along the Hudson River, the east side, to Francis Rumbout, Jacobus Kipp and Stephanus Van Courtlandt (S. Van Courtlandt was the father of Elizabeth Skinner). There was a division and a partition with the children and grandchildren Novemver 1, 1733."
"William Skinner and Elizabeth his wife deeded to Adolphus Brower October 9th, 1741, Lot No. 4, containing 755 acres of land on the south side of the great Wappingers--- or River and every part thereof and the ground and soil under the same, including the little falls north of this lot as well as the great falls, with all the creeks, meadows, watercourses, marshed, etc. etc. Nicholas Brower, eldest sonof Adolphus, possessed this lot of land, whether by heirship or otherwise not ascertained."14
  • Nicholas is treated in "Brouwer Beginnings" (TAG 24:166-7) by Hoffman, who states that Nicholas settled at Wappinger Falls in Dutchess Co., New York, where his father had bought in 1741, 755 acres on the south side of Wappingers Creek. It was a part of the Rombout Patent. He soon after built a small house, later enlarged by attaching to it a much larger dwelling. It was sold on 1 May 1777 to Peter Mesier. The house, which is still standing in Mesier Park, now belongs to the village. During his lifetime, Nicholas acquired a large acerage of farm land with a mile frontage on the river. In addition to the old homestead he built the Old Library Building, the Red Mill, and a dock at the head of tide water. Vessels drawing six feet of water could come to this dock. During the Revolutionary War, the estate at Fishkill was the camping ground for the families taking refuge from the British when they were advancing up the Hudson. Nicholas Brouwer and his wife gave them a home and provided them with ways and means to continue their journey. According to records in the Collection of the Dutchess Co. Historical Society, he mortgaged his holdings of 755 acres on two occasions. He also sold small parcels of it to Isaac and Jacob Brouwer, his brothers. He is variously indicated as a miller and a carpenter. Towards the end of his life he moved to Albany.15
  • Nicholas Brouwer was granted administration of the estate of Adolphus Brouwer on 25 August 1742 at New York Co., New York; to his eldest son Nicholas Brouwer. "Adolph Brower late of Bergen County, deceased, where as the said Adolph Brower lately died intestate..."16,17
  • Nicholas Brower appears on the tax list in Rombout Precinct, Dutchess Co., New York in the years 1743-1748, 1753-1763, 1765-1775.18,19
  • In 1750, Nicholas Brower brought a suit of ejectment against the Trinity Church corporation. He was nonsuited by default. In 1760 he renewed the suit, "but was again beaten." (This suit would have been an attempt to recover the properties once owned by Anneke Jans).20
  • Nicholas Brouwer witnessed the baptism of Annatje Steenbergen , daughter of Jacobus Steenbergen and Mally Schouten, on 16 April 1758 at Reformed Dutch Church, New Hackensack, Dutchess Co., New York, (sponsors Nicolaas Brouwer and his wife.).21
  • On 2 Dec 1758 Nicholas Brouwer and Mary his wife of Rombout Precinct put up property consisting of 755 acres bought by Nicholas' father Adolph Brouwer in 1741, as security for a loan of three hundred pounds.22
  • Nicholas Brouwer witnessed the baptism of Maria van Iveren , daughter of Berger van Iveren and Femmetje Westerveld, on 15 March 1761 at Reformed Dutch Church, New Hackensack, Dutchess Co., New York, (sponsors Nicolaas Brouwer, Maria Duister).23

  • On 1 Dec 1762, he took out another mortgage on a parcel called "a farm and a small piece of two acres adjoining the Wappinger Creek."22
  • "On the 6th of January, 1763 Catherine Brett quit claimed to Nicholas Brower all her right and title to and in the great Wappingers Creek or River and all the parts thereto belonging. Beginning at the northeast corner of the land belonging to Isaac Lawson, thense running down said creek, its courses and turn as the creek---."14
  • Nicholas Brouwer was subscribed to a membership in the at Reformed Dutch Church, New Hackensack, Dutchess Co., New York, on 31 October 1765 at 8-0-0.24
  • On 7 Nov 1766, Nicholas again mortgaged the 775 acres which "had been purchased by Adolph Brouwer the father of Nicholas Brouwer, his eldest son and heir," added to this land which Nicholas had purchased 16 Nov 1761. Reserved from the mortgage were parcels that had been sold from the 755 acres to various individuals viz: John Burnes (afterwards in possession of Thomas van Breemer), Peter Kenney, William Hitchcock, Isaac Brouwer, Jacob Brouwer, Bernardus Swarthout and Samuel Quackingbush.22
  • "March 2, 1770, John Drake, eldest son and heir at law of William Drake, deeded for the sum of 100 pounds to Nicholas Brower of Rumbout in the County of Dutchess, all my right title and interest in a certain lot of land lying in Flushing, Long Island."25
  • In May 1770, Nicholas Brouwer of Rombouts, Dutchess Co., New York sold a large tract of land (157 3/4 acres) which he had occupied at "Wapping Creek," to Cornelia Van Sicklen. Nicholas then moved to Albany, New York. Nicholas and his wife Sarah then mortgaged all of his remaining property in the Province of New York.22,26
  • On 14 March 1775 Theophilus Beekman conveyed to Nicholas Brouwer Theophilus Beekman of the City of New York, Gentleman conveys to Nicholas Brower of Rumboldt Precinct in Dutchess County, 1000 acres being part of lot number 6 in the 13th allotment of the general partition of the patent of ___, being in the County of Albany. On 19 Apr 1797, in an effort to confirm the 1775 deed, and for the purpose of removing any doubt of the original deed, Theophilus Beekman, for the consideration of 10 shillings paid by Jeremiah Brower, one of the heirs and devisees of the said Nicholas Brower, in behalf of himself and other heirs and devisees, re-conveyed the same parcel of land.27
  • On 22 Jun 1775 Nicholas Brouwer took a mortgage from his son Nicholas Brouwer, Jr. of Rombouts, and Mary his wife, for a loan given to his son.22
  • On 22 January 1776 Thomas Palmer conveyed to Nicholas Brouwer for forty-five pounds, 4000 acres of land situate in the County of ___ on the northwest side of the Sackendoga Branch of the Hudson River, within part of the Indian purchase of 166,000 acres made in the year 1773 by the said subscriber for himself and others. The said Brower, his heirs or assigns to have the said quarter of 4000 acres quantity and quality with land out of the tract of the said subscriber as a tennant in common with him, his heirs or assigns. The said Brower paying the future charges for the said 4000 acres. Signed and sealed by Thomas Palmer. Witnessed by Nicholas Brower, Junior, Sarah Flair. • The land mentioned by Nicholas Brower in his will, as being north of the Mohawk, and distributed in 200 acre parcels to some of his children, was later referred to by descendants as the "land at Galway."32
  • In the early to mid 1800s a chronology of property originally belonging to Adolphus Brower was written down. The notes survive today and a brief outline follows:
In 1741, Adolphus Brower, father of Nicholas, purchased of William Skinner, one of the heirs by marriage of Stephen Van Courtland, 750 acres of land lying on the south side of Wappingers Creek, on which Nicholas went to reside. Adolphus paid £100 on purchase and Nicholas paid the remaining £500 as recorded in Dutchess county.
In 1742 or 1743 Adolphus died and Nicholas being the eldest son and heir-in-law came into possession of the property. This is confirmed by "Judge Hearing of New Jersey, and John Verdon and Henry Ludlow present, the 6th day of Sept., in the County of Orange, of the province of New York, as memorandum showeth." (A year was not given in the notes).
In 1750, Nicholas Brower purchased from all of his brothers and sisters, their rights in the estate as well as his mother's dower of the same, paid them for the same and settled the whole estate in the "presence of Joseph Thirston and Johannes Verdon."
In 1761, Nicholas Brower purchased of Antony Yelverton and Rolif Ostrum, 243 acres of land in the Lansing Patent (their wives being descendants from the Lansing family). He also purchased as the same piece or parcel of land of the Van Cortland heirs, the Van Cortland heirs claiming water priviledge as per their patentee deed. The rest of the Lansings, except one, sold to Nicholas Brower, "making the whole of that patent something in the neighborhood of 1200 acres conveyed to Nicholas Brower."33
  • The NYG&BS is in possession of a typed manuscript of one page entitled Brouwer Genealogy. Totten in "Anneke Jans and Her Two Husbands," NYG&BR 56:236, relates the Brouwer Genealogy verbatum:
(These items were found on the blank pages of an old book in the City of Kingston, New York.)

    "(These items end the records)"
"Matter in parenthesis is written by me
    "G.W.N." [Nash]
These entries would have been written by this Nicholas Brouwer. His son, Nicholas (b.1747) in turn gave the book to his own son Nicholas in 1817. Benjamin Brower, a brother of this last Nicholas, apparently came in possession of the book next, and made the entries regarding his family.34

Although the notes are flawed in the earlier generations, the Pitcairns do list the children of Nicholas Brouwer and Sarah Drake, along with the spouses of this couple's daughters. There is no reason to suspect errors with this generation as Martha (Manning) Pitcairn is the daughter of one and the neice of the other children of Nicholas Brouwer and Sarah Drake. Nicholas Brouwer

b. between 1725 and 1735
  • Nicholas Brouwer was probably born between 1725 and 1735 at New Jersey.
  • On 2 March 1779 A Jeremy Brewer and a Nicholas Brewer are found on the 2 March 1779 Albany Co. tax list living at Half Moon, while a Jeremiah Brewer and Nicholas Brewer are recorded on the 23 Oct. 1779 Albany Co. tax list at Half Moon. Among their neighbors in March 1779 are Widow Buys, John Hooper, Charles Elsworth and John Sterling. Abraham D'graf lived next to John Sterling and Nicholas Brewer was on the other side. In Oct. 1779 their neighbors are John Concklin, John Hooper, Mary Buyce (presummed to be the "widow" in March), Charles Aylesworth, John Sterlin, Thomas Concklin, and Thomas Concklin, Jr.
  • In 1786 Nicholas Brouwer resided at Newtown, (then Albany Co., now Saratoga Co.), New York.1
  • Nicholas is a possible brother of Jeremiah Brower, and therefore possibly a son of Jurge Brouwer and Elizabeth Holmes. In 1786, Jeremiah Brower, then of Hoosick, later of Highgate, Vermont, filed a Loyalist Claim with the British Government, stating that in Aug. 1777 he lived at Newtown in the Half Moon Patent, and offered as a refernce, one Nicholas Brower, then (1786) of Newtown. As Jurge Brouwer's father was named Nicholas, it would follow that he in turn would name a son, possibly an eldest son, Nicholas. In 1790, a Jeremiah Brower is found living at Half Moon, New York (First Federal Census). It is likely that this Jeremiah would then be a son of this Nicholas.

Nicholas Brouwer (1714-1778) was first married to Mary Dutcher, but married his second wife Sarah Drake in March 1765. His son Nicholas (b.1747) did not marry his wife, Mary Birdsall, as a "y.m." until April 1771. Nicholas Brouwer (b.ca.1730) who married Maria Boom, and lived in Albany, is a possiblity, but there is no reason to call him "Jr." (Could the date of 1768 be incorrect? See below).12

Peter Brouwer1

b. 28 May 1774, d. 8 December 1834
  • Peter Brouwer was born on 28 May 1774 at Bergen Co., New Jersey, (Bible record).1,2
  • He married Catherine Post at Reformed Protestant Dutch Church of Bergen, (now Jersey City, Bergen Co., New Jersey), on 10 April 1796.3
  • Peter Brouwer died on 8 December 1834 at Huron, Wayne Co., New York; "aged 60 years, 7 mos., 8 days."1,2
  • Also known as Peter Brower.1
  • He witnessed the baptism of Peter Brower , son of Johannes Brouwer and Syntje Post, on 21 October 1792 at Reformed Dutch Church, New York City, New York, (witnesses Peter Brower, Antje Sickels).4
  • Peter Brouwer appeared on the census in 1820 at Phelps, Ontario Co., New York, as Peter Brower, with a household of 1 male under 10, 2 males 10-16, 1 male over 45, 1 female under 10, 1 female over 45, 2 persons engaged in agriculture.5
  • He appeared on the census in 1830 at Phelps, Ontario Co., New York, as Peter Brower, with a household of 1 male 10-15, 1 male 15-20, 1 male 50-60, 1 female 15-20, 1 female 50-60.6
  • He witnessed the will of Joseph Brouwer on 9 March 1832; (Ontario Co., NY Wills, Book B) called Joseph Brower of Phelps. Leaves to his son John $5, to three daughters Lany, Catherine, and Polly, 33 acres of land where he now lives. His wife (not named) to have use during her lifetime. Witnessed by Peter Brower, Jr. and John Brower, 2nd. The will was not proved until 13 Oct 1841, at Ontario Co. Surrogate's Court, by Peter Brower, Jr., of Huron, Wayne Co., New York, who stated that Joseph Brower was his uncle and that Peter Brower who witnessed the will was his father, now deceased. Catherine Brower states that she lives in Huron, Wayne Co., N.Y., is the widow of Peter Brower, and the will of Joseph Brower was kept at her their home, and that Peter died in 1834. Orra (Ariah) Brower, living in Ohio, came to their home to get the will to take to Leah Brower, widow of Joseph Brower. Leah Brower states that she is 73 years old, and is the widow of Joseph. John Brower the 2nd, says he witnessed the will, now lives in Phelps, New York, is a blacksmith and a son of Peter Brower, deceased, that he is a nephew of Joseph Brower and he witnessed the will. The petition for probate at the Ontario County Surrogate's Court states that Joseph died 12 July 1832, in Phelps, leaving a widow Leah of Phelps; Eleanor wife of Daniel Pier of Parma, New York; Polly Hathaway, wife of Silas A. Hathaway of Clinton, Mascoomb Co., Michigan; Catherine L. Murphy, widow, of Phelps, New York; children of John Brower, his (Joseph's) deceased son as follows: Joseph, Ariah C., Eliza Brower of Springfield, Illinois, Lucinda and Catherine Brower of Huntsburg, Ohio. Catherine and Eliza are minors.7
  • His will was dated on 18 February 1834 proved 16 Jan 1836, Wayne Co., Surr. Ct. Called Peter Brower of Sodus, names wife Catherine who is to receive all property both real and personal. Witnessed by Peter Brower, J., Rulen Torry, David V. Brower. Appearing at the probate hearing were Catherine Brower, executrix, Peter Brower, John Brower, David V. Brower, Joseph Brower, Maria Young.8
  • A transcription of a Bible record has helped to identify Peter Brower's family. Although the title, publisher and most importantly, publishing date were not recorded with the transcription, the Bible record still appears to be useful for Peter's immediate family. Peter's family is the first complete family recorded in the Bible and is followed by the family of Peter's son, Joseph G. Brower. The last record is the death recording of Josephine Brower, daughter of Joseph G. This pattern of records is evidence that that Bible most likely originated with Joseph G. Brower and was probably purchased in the first half of the 1800's. It is possible that is originated with Peter, but since his siblings are not recorded this is less likely. In addition, the date of Peter's marriage to his wife, Catherine Post, is not recorded. Neither are the names of Catherine Post's parents. If this Bible did originate with Peter Brower, both of these records would have been included. The Bible most definetly did not originate with Peter's parents, Johannes Brouwer and Catherine/Trintje Waldron. Although their birth and death dates are recorded, their children other than Peter are not. If this were their Bible, then all of the children of Johannes and Catherine would have been recorded. The birth date given for Johannes is three years previous to his known, recorded baptism date. This is further evidence that the Bible was initiated with a later generation who was not present during Johannes' lifetime. Further more, the Bible identifies Johannes' parents as Jacob Brouwer and Effie Waldron. This identification is incorrect. Although Johannes' father was a Jacob Brouwer, his mother was Lea Slot. The Effie Waldron mentioned in the Bible record is most likely Aefje Hellekers, the mother of Catherine Waldron. Her married name would have been Aefje "Effie" WALDRON. It is apparent that the person who recorded these ancestors in their Bible matched their paternal grandfather's father with their paternal grandmother's mother, in error. This is then further evidence that the Bible did not originate with one of the earlier generations. The just mentioned ancestors would have been long deceased and not personally known to Joseph G. Brower. The evidence is strong that this Bible originated with Joseph G. Brower. This exercise also provides a lesson: It is critical that whenever a transcription of a Bible record is made, a record of the title, publisher, and publishing date must be included. It is also important to obtain clear photocopies of the original pages, so that the handwriting can be annalized. If multiple generations are covered and if the entries were written contemporaneously to the lives of those recorded, then different handwriting should be evident with each generation. If not, then it can be assumed that the records of earlier generations were entered long after the individulas lived, from the memory of a descendant, which makes them less reliable.

  • At least two applications for membership into D.A.R. are known for descendants of Peter Brewer (Nos. 223630 and 349610, mother and daughter). Both applications cite the incorrect Revolutionary War service for their ancestor. The service cited belonged to a Peter Brewer who enlisted as a resident of Cortlandt Manor, served in Westchester County, later moved to Washington Co., New York and died in 1839. The applicants ancestor (this Peter Brewer), however, died in 1830 as evidenced by the probate of his will in Columbia County. This Peter Brewer most likely did serve in the Revolution, however, since he was living in Albany Co. at the time, he is most likely the Peter Bruer/Brewer who served with the 15th Regt. Albany Militia.16,17

  2. [S1379] William Bogardus, "E-mail correspondence from William Bogardus," e-mail message from Bogardus, William to Chris Chester and et al, Received May 19, 2008. "I've been reviewing some past correspondence regarding a possible spouse and descendancy from Petrus Brouwer, bp. New York Dutch Church, 12 Oct 1740, son of Pieter Brouwer and his 1st wife, Elizabeth Quackenbush; and Pieter, son of Jacobus Brouwer and Anna Bogardus. In my 1996 "Dear Cousin" Book on Chart 7D, I had indicated "no further record" for Petrus. A correspondent of mine, who had apparently been in contact with Lilly in late 2005 or early 2006 (Sharon Craig) had indicated that Petrus (Peter) had died in Tate Twp., Clermont Co., OH in 1842 and that he (as Peter Brewer) had married Margaret Melow 23 Mar 1780, in Gloucester Co., NJ. She was apparently born in 1761 in Somerset Co., NY and died in 1838 in Tate Twp. also. Clermont County, OH is not far from Wilmington so I will try to investigate this myself when time permits.
I'm aware of Lilly's "rootsweb" inquiry of 15 Apr 2005, pertaining to the NJ tax records of 1790-1815 wherein Peter was apparently included; and a later 10 Mar 2006 "rootsweb" excellent report by Lilly pertaining to the "Brower Families in Missouri" wherein the ancestry of Peter, with his wife Margaret Melow, is tentatively concluded as being a descendant of Jacobus Brouwer as indicated above.
My present questions are: do you both now accept that it was Petrus (Peter), bp. 12 Oct 1740, the son of Jacobus Brouwer and Anna Bogardus, who married Margaret Melow; and do you agree that Peter and Margaret had: (1) Peter, b. 7 Apr 1788, Egg Harbor, Gloucester Co., NJ, d. 11 May 1869, Dabney, Ripley Co., IN, who married Anna Perrine, 1 Jun 1817 in Clermont Co., OH. She was apparently born 3 Dec 1787 in Cranbury, Middlesex Co., NJ and died 18 Sep 1872 in Ripley Co., IN; and (2) Adam, b. 13 Apr 1802, Gloucester Co., NJ, d. 14 Nov 1892, Hamilton Co., IN, who married Janet MacMurchy, 12 Oct 1824 in Brown Co., OH - - and I have more information about her. In the 1850 census for Otter Creek Township, Ripley Co., IN, I believe I found Peter (as Peter Brown), age 62, b. NJ, living with his son Andrew and family; and in the 1860 census for the same place, as Peter Brown, age 72, b. NJ, living with his son James D. and family; and in the 1870 census for Center Township, I found Anna Browers, age 83, b. NJ, living with Andrew and his family. Another child of Peter and Margaret was Margaret Melow Brower, b. 1818, Clermont Co., OH, d. 1888, married Edward Thomas Newberry - - with more information also; and I have children and descendants of Adam Brower and Janet MacMurchy
I would welcome your comments.". Hereinafter cited as "Wm. Bogardus e-mail."

Pieter Brouwer1,2

b. 23 September 1646
  • Pieter Brouwer was baptized on 23 September 1646 at Reformed Dutch Church, New Amsterdam, sponsors Mr. Paulus van der Beek, Willem Bredenbent, Aeltje Braconye, Mary du Trieux.3
  • He married Petronella Uldrickse Kleyn, daughter of Uldrick Kleyn and Baefje Pieters, before 1673.4
  • Patronymic: Pieter Adamsz.5
  • A deed of 1701 calls Pieter the eldest child of Adam Brouwer. He was apparently at Schenectady immediately after his marriage to Petronella Kleyn, and is last found in a record at East Jersey in 1701. The date and place of his death is not known, and it is possible that he went to the Albany, New York area later in life. He named his eldest son (Adam Brouwer's first grandson) Uldrick (for his father-in-law) and this may have been a sore point for Adam as late as 1692, when he disinherited Pieter in his will. Pieter's older children are found in Bergen Co., New Jersey, and his youngest three children in the Albany, New York area.
  • On 1 Sep 1679, Peter Brouwer was "bound over to answer at the Gravesend sessions for an assault on Gerrit Croesen." As Gerrit died shortly thereafter, the question seems open as to whether or not his death was the result of the assault.6,7
  • Pieter Brouwer and Petronella Uldrickse Kleyn were members of the at Reformed Protestant Dutch Church, Flatbush, Kings Co., Long Island, New York, on 19 November 1679 living at Gowanus. Pieter is listed as "Pieter Adamsz and wife", and is recorded with his father, Adam Brouwer, "under censure."5
  • Pieter Brouwer witnessed the baptism of Willemyntje Brouwer , daughter of Matthys Brouwer and Marietje Pieterse Wyckoff, on 26 February 1682 at Old First Dutch Reformed Church, Breuckelen (Brooklyn), Kings Co., Long Island, New York, (sponsors Pieter Brouwer, Eegtje (Agatha) Joris. Also recorded at Flatbush.).8,9
  • Pieter Brouwer took the Oath of Allegiance in September 1687 at Brooklyn, Kings Co., New York, as "Pieter brouwer, native."10
  • "Pieter Brouwer is among the soldiers from King's County sent in 1690 to Albany."11
  • Peter is named in his father's will dated 22 Jan 1691. He is given three shillings and, for "his disobedience" is cut off from an equal share of his father's property, with his share to pass on to his children.12
  • On 10 Oct 1700, Peter Brower of East New Jersey deeds Abram and Nicholas Brower of Brooklyn, "Whereas there is a corn mill in Brooklyn called Gowanus Mill bounded by land of Jacob Hanson, Hendrick Vechte, Volkert Briez, formerly in the tenure of Adam Brower, deceased, true owner as by a conveyance from Tunis Nyssen, deceased, and heirs of John Evertse Bout, deceased, etc." The indenture states that Peter Brower is the eldest son of Adam Brower, deceased. Signs by his mark. Witnessed by William Laurence, Anthony Karr, both sign by mark. Acknowledged 21 Oct 1700 before Col. Gerardus Beeckman, Justice of the Peace.13,14
  • Pieter is the eldest child of Adam Brouwer and Magdalena Verdon, as stated in the deed of October 1700. His wife lived in Schenectady, and after their marriage, the couple apparently remained there through the births of their two eldest children. Pieter then relocated the family to Brooklyn, possibly lived in New Haerlem for a short period, then settled in East Jersey, where he is said to be from in October 1700. The marriage records of a few of his children state that they were living in Newark. However, a check of some land records there, of that time, did not find any Browers or Brewers (Newark was founded and settled by "English" families, many coming from the New England Colonies. While his six oldest children all married in the Dutch Church at Hackensack, New Jersey, and raised families in that area, the next three youngest children were all married at Albany, New York, and remained in that area. No record of Peter is yet to be found post October 1700, when he would have been 54 years old. As the three youngest children are later found in the Albany area, it is possible that Peter moved once again, this time to that area. It could also be reasoned that Peter died shortly after October 1700, and his widow, along with her three youngest children, returned to the Albany area, a place where she grew up and where her extended family remained. A Peter Brouwer did stand as sponsor at a baptism in March 1723 at the Reformed Dutch Church at Albany (see below).
  • A Petrus Brouwer (with Hendr. Oothout) were sponsors on 3 March 1723 at the baptism of Hendrik Bovy, son of Claes Bovy and Cornelia Brouwer. It is not known for certain who this Peter Brouwer is. The child who was baptized would be a grandson of this Peter Brouwer, and if alive in 1723, he would be 77 years old. The next closest relation to the mother, Cornelia Brouwer, would be her nephew, Peter Brouwer, b.1701, son of her brother Abraham Brouwer. This Peter Brouwer was alive in 1723, had married Dina de Groot, and was sponsor at a number of baptisms in Hackensack, although no other baptisms in Albany.15
  • T.G. Bergen, in 1878 (NYG&BR 9:127) incorrectly attributes three wives to Pieter Brouwer, stating that he married 2nd, Geertruyd Jans (she was witness at the baptism of Pieter's son Jacob in 1694), and 3rd, Annetie Jansen. Neither of the two women were wives of this Pieter Brouwer. Totten in 1936 (NYG&BR 67:222) disproves the 2nd and 3rd marriages.
  • Henry Brewer is a possible descendant of Pieter Brouwer Through Y-DNA testing, a descendant of Henry Brewer matches on 36 of 37 markers, three different descendants of Pieter Brouwer.

The genealogy "tentatively" assigns a son named Pieter to his family. However, the two records cited, a 1731 church membership of Antje Berge and the 1759 administration of Peter Brewer of Shrewsbury, cannot belong to the same man. The 1731 membership, as described, is in error. The actual record, found in GMNJ 22:4, states that Antje Berge was the widow of Peter Brower. As he died prior to 1731, this Peter Brower cannot be the Peter Brewer whose estate was administered in 1759. No direct, or circumstantial evidence, is provided to account for a son named Pieter. The genealogy does not address the parentage or possible parentage of Annatje Jans. Hereinafter cited as "Jan Brouwer."
