  • He married Laura Porter before 1843 (no record of marriage found).1
  • George J. Brower died on 7 March 1863 at Stapleton, Richmond Co., New York; aged 55 years, 10 months and 7 days.2
  • In 1840 George J. Brower resided at Brooklyn, Kings Co., New York; 1 male under 5, 1 male 20-29, 1 female 20-29, 1 female 60-70.3
  • He appeared on the census on 19 August 1850 at Castleton, Richmond Co. (Staten Island), New York, Geo. J. Brower, age 40, born in New York. Mechanic. In the household are Laura Brower (age 39), Cordelia Brower (18), Alburtus Brower (17), Horace Brower (6), Nichol Brower (5), Christina Brower (2), Louis Brower (1/12).4
  • He appeared on the census on 1 June 1855 at Castleton, Richmond Co. (Staten Island), New York, George Brower, age 47, born in New York. Mechanic. In the hosuehold are his wife Laura, and children Horace, Nicholas, Christina, George and Mary.5
  • He appeared on the census on 20 October 1860 at Middleton, Richmond Co. (Staten Island), New York, (Port Richmond Post Office). Geo. J. Brower, age 50, house carpenter. Real estate valued at $1800, personal estate at $350. In the household are Lora M. Brower (age 39), Horace H. Brower (16, clerk), Nicholas Brower (14), Christina Brower (12), Geo. Brower (10), Solomon Brower (5), Theodore Brower (3), Wm. Brower (1), Margaret Porter (69).6
  • George J. Brower is very probably a son of Nicholas Brouwer and Christina Weyman, but this theory has not been proved using traditional genealogical evidence. Evidence for this likelihood is in the fact that Y-DNA testing of a descendant of George J. Brower very closely mathces that of a descendant of Nicholas Brouwer, and, George J. Brower named two of his children, Nicholas and Christina.
  • It appears that George J. Brower had two wives. The first, who would be the mother of Cordelia and Albertus (presumed children of George) has not been identified. The second, Laura Porter, was born ca. 1821, and therefore cannot be the mother of Cordelia or Alburtus who were born ca. 1832 and ca. 1833 respectively.

George Washington Brower was born in New York City Nov. 25, 1821. He was a son of Jacob P. Brower, one of the first settlers in this city, and who died in Beaver Dam in 1846. The deceased came to Dodge county in 1838 in company with his father and brother Lafayette, and settled on the north side of Fox Lake, upon the place now known as Stoddart Farm. The balance of the family soon followed and their home was known as the Brower colony and was composed of the following members: Paul, Rachel, Jacob P., Martha, George W., J. LaFayette, Euphema, Emily, Amelia, and T. J., and Catherine, the domestic. Jacob P. Brower was the pioneer of Fox Lake and the fourth settler in this city.
In the spring of 1846 George W. Brower was appointed by Gov. Didge sheriff of Dodge county, to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of sheriff Peter V. Brown. He was also sheriff in 1860. He married Miss Julia Hamlin in Beaver Dam in 1853, who, with three children, Mrs. G. W. Gilmore of Austin. Minn., and the Misses Minnie H. and May Brower, of this city, survive him. He resided in Fox Lake the most of his many years in Dodge county and was very liberal giver toward the building of Downer college, and gave the site for the Fox Lake Public Schools. The old settlers club od Dodge County, of which he was the oldest memebr, and the entire community will ever remember him as an honored citizen and will regret that death takes from our midst so good a man as G. W. Brower. His relatives will have the sympathy of all. His funeral was held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Rev. T. S. Johnson officiating, and interment in Beaver Dam Cemetery.2
