At age 12 he left school to clerk for Augustus Wyncoop, a large grocer and general merchant, eventually becoming a manager and finally a partner. After Wyncoop's death, John Brower managed the business under the name Brower & Neilson. In 1848, he formed along with his son-in-law Benjamin B. Blydenburgh, the firm of J.H. Brower & Co., grocers and merchants in the West India trade and later expanding into insurance, commission and ship owning. The New York and Texas packet line was his venture and at one time had 15 vessels. He served as Consul for the Republic of Texas in the United States. During the Civil War he helped organize the 7th Regt. in New York City and served as Captain. He served as a director of The City Bank, The Bank of the Republic, The Commercial Union, and the Union Mutual Insurance Co.⁵
