In April 1867 John M. Brower was the leader of the newly formed Hamburg Lodge of the Union League. The Union League was established to provide support for Union troops during the Civil War. By the fall, more than one third of the Hamburg Lodge members were African Americans, many of whom were probably invited to join the lodge by their white neighbors.7
