b. 21 January 1714
  • Lorenz Brua was born on 21 January 1714 at Hirschland, present day Bas-Rhin Dept., Alsace, France.1
  • Also known as Laurentius Brua.1
  • Lorenz was the first Brua to come to America, immigrating in 1739 at age 25, unmarried. He traveled on the ship Robert and Alice and arrived on 3 Sep 1739 from Rotterdam via Deal, England. The signature of Lorentz Brua is found on the oath of allegiance list, but after that no other positive record of him has been found. It is thought that he probably went to Virginia through the Shenandoah Valley as did many other Palatine pioneers of his time.
There is a place on the Staunton River near where it flows into the Roanoke River called Brua's Ford. In Feb 1759 the Virginia House of Burgesses authorized a ferry "from the land of Richard Blanks/Black in the County of Lunenburg on the Staunton River, at a place called Brua's Ford. to the land on the opposite side in the County of Halifax; the price for a man three pence, and for a horse the same." It is not known what other Brua this ford could be named for. In 1758, when his father's estate was being distributed, his family stated that Lorenz had not been heard from in many years, and was presumed dead.2
