Aaron Burr1

b. 6 February 1756, d. 14 September 1836
  • Father*: Rev. Aaron Burr1
  • Mother*: Esther Edwards1
  • Aaron Burr was born on 6 February 1756 at Newark, Essex Co., New Jersey.1
  • He married Theodosia Bartow, daughter of Theodosius Bartow and Ann Stillwell, at Paramus, Bergen Co., New Jersey, on 2 July 1782.1
  • Aaron Burr married Eliza Bowen, daughter of John Bowen and Phoebe Kelly, at New York City, New York, on 1 July 1833.2
  • Aaron Burr died on 14 September 1836 at Daniel Winant's Tavern, Port Richmond, Staten Island, (Richmond Co.), New York.1
  • He was buried at Princeton Cemetery, Princeton, New Jersey.1
  • Aaron Burr was raised in the home of his uncle Timothy Edwards. He was eductaed by his future brother-in-law, Tapping Reeve, and graduated at the College of New Jersey in 1772, aged 16, LL.D 1803. He studied theology for a short time before turning to law. His studies were interrupted by a brilliant career in the Revolution, in which he rose to the rank of Lieut.-Colonel. He was admitted to the bar at Albany, as attorney 19 Jan 1782, and as counsellor 17 Apr 1782.1
  • Aaron Burr served in the New York Legislature 1784-85, 1798-99, 1800-01, was Attorney General of New York State 1789-91, United States Senator 1791-99, candidate for the Presidency in 1800, narrowly defeated by Thomas Jefferson and became Vice-President, although was not re-elected for Jefferson's second term. It was a Vice-President that Burr fought the duel at Weehawken, New Jersey on 11 Jul 1804, which ended in the death of Alexander Hamilton. In 1805 and 1806, Aaron Burr traveled extensively in what is now the midwest and south and came under suspicion of treason and conspiracy, for which he was tried and acquitted in 1807 at Richmond, Virginia in a trial presided over by Justice Marshall.2
  • When Aaron Burr died in 1836, he left no legitimate descendants (all predeceasing him) but there exists impressive evidence that there were two illegitimate daughters admitted by Burr in his will, besides a son whose association with Burr strongley upholds his claim, and suggests that there may well have been other illegitimate children, all, or most of whom, were by different mothers.3
