Jeremiah Buys1

b. circa 1750
  • Jeremiah Buys was born circa 1750.1
  • "Jeremiah Buis was sued with Benjamin Philips and John Buis (probably his brother), by Jacob Weaver in Tryon Co. (NY). Jeremy Boyce took a lease on 100 acres in lot 145W from Sir John Johnson on 25 Mar 1779. This lease was noted next to that for John Boyce. Alexander White, High Sheriff of Tryon Co. placed a notice in the New York Gazette-Mercury on 18 Oct 1773 concerning Jeremiah Boice, age ca. 25 who ran away from him June 6. Sheriff White and Gilbert Tice placed another notice in a New Jersey paper, "RUN-AWAY on the 6th day of June last, from Alexander White, Esq., High Sheriff of the county of Tryon, one Jeremiah Boice; he is about 25 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, stout made, with lightish colour'd hair; he understands all kinds of farmer's business and has lost one of his large toes: Had on when he absented himself, a blue coat and a red waitcoat, trim'd with brass buttons. He went off in company of one Joshua Agan, an apprentice to Gilbert Tice...They are supposed to have gone to New Jersey or Egg Harbor." A Jeremiah Boyce joined the 2nd Regt. in Albany in 1775. The Jeremiah Boyce in Edenton, North Carolina in 1790 at 1-3-6, was probably this man."1

Johannes Buys1

b. 1 November 1685, d. circa 1763
  • "They lived at Poughkeepsie, New York, where three of their children were baptized. Another was baptized in the Lutheran Church at New York, and still another one at Fishkill."4
  • Johannes moved to Cortlandt, Westchester Co., New York by 1708 (where his first child was baptized) and was in Fishkill by 1712. He was elected tax collector in 1717, an assessor in 1720, and Overseer of the Highways in the South Ward on 3 April 1722. He served as surveyor of fences in the South Ward, 1720-1722 and was probably the John Buys mentioned in the road description dated 17 April 1722. On 7 March 1726 he and Isaac Hendrickson took a lease from Adolph Philips on a farm south of the Fishkill Creek near Fishkill Village. His brother Abraham Buys took a lease with his father-in-law, Jacob Ter Bos on 8 May 1730 in the same area. Johannes Buys and his wife, Maria Brouwer were admitted to the Fishkill Reformed Church on 21 Dec 1731. He was taxed in the South Ward from 1717/18 until 1734/35 when he left to settle the area of the Beekman Patent called Oswego, an area that had no settlement prior to this, although some close by areas had begun to be settled. By 1735 Johannes and a large group of friends and family members, in total 14 families, settled on 2000 acres in the Oswego area. The first settlers were Johannes Buys, Johannes Dolson, Abraham Dolson, Benjamin Bartlett and Jacob Schouten. By 1737 Jacob Dolson, Abraham Fontyn, Hendrick Thomas, and Simon and Matthew Buys had joined them. Gabriel Wright and Hendrick Bartlett came the following year. Johannes Buys settled on a 160 acre farm in lot 17 about 1/4 mile east of the present Oswego Meeting. He paid rent from 1747 until 1763 when his son Peter took over the lease. Johannes was sued on a number of occassions by various plaintiffs seeking to collect unpaid debts (May 1738, Aug 1739, Oct 1752) and had court appointments for other legal issues in 1752 and 1753. He was taxed in Beekman from 1738 through June 1765 when the listing changed to "Farm" and in June 1768 it became Peter Buys until 1777. As Hones Byse he was listed as path master for "Swago" at the Beekman town meeting of 2 April 1750, the only town record found for him.2
  • He witnessed the baptism of Henricus Woll , son of Jörgen Woll and Aeltje Brouwer, on 25 November 1713 at Reformed Dutch Church, New York City, New York, (sponsors Johannes and Marritje Buys).5
  • On 7 May 1715, at the house of Honnes Lossing, Johannes Buys adopted Ephraim Bartlett, b. 31 Jul 1709, the son of Jesias Bartlett and his wife Cornelia, who had died after Ephraim's birth.3
  • Johannes Buys witnessed the baptism of Daniel Cousyn , son of Thomas Cousyn and Annetje Brouwer, on 4 March 1724 at Reformed Dutch Church, New York City, New York, (sponsors Jan Buys, Elizabeth Buys).6
  • Hoffman places Johannes as a son of Arien Pieters Buys (TAG 23:203) stating that he was born at Bergen, 2 April 1689, while Settlers of the Beekman Patent places him in the family of Jan Buys (the son of Jan Cornelisen Buys). Being of the belief that the later is the accurate placement (basing this on the naming of Johannes' own children) he is shown here as a son of Jan Buys and Elizabeth de Groot.

  • He married Eipje Lassing, daughter of Willem Pietersz Lassen and Marytie Schouten, circa 1740.2
  • Johannes Buys died between 1759 and 1764.3
  • Johannes probably came to Oswego at about the same time as his father. His first child was baptized in the Clove in 1741. He seems to have taken over the farm of his uncle Simon and settled and was taxed in Beekman until 1753, and was still there, or had returned for the baptism of his son Abraham in 1759. He is mentioned in a road description of 1751, and at the time was on a 215 acre farmin lot 20 at the intersection of present Parliman Rd. and Jackson Rd. A memorandum book of leases kept by Catherine Pawling mentions that Johannes Buys, Jr. took a lease from her in lot 20 in 1748. Johannes Buys, Jr. sued James Dobin and Ephraim Mills, Jr. in 1757. He was taxed in Beekman from 1741 until 1753. He was a path master in Beekman in 1750.4

Matheus Buys

b. 21 March 1710
  • Matheus Buys was baptized on 21 March 1710 at Old Dutch Church of Sleepy Hollow, (First Reformed Church of Tarrytown), Westchester Co., New York, sponsors Mathys Brouwer and Marytje his wife.1
  • He married Catrina Lassing, daughter of Willem Pietersz Lassen and Marytie Schouten, in July 1736 (banns published 16 Jul 1736 "Mathew Buis of New Swago and Catherine Lossing").2
  • Also known as Mathew Buys.
  • Mathew Buys settled in the Clove and his farm was called the Ilth farm, 120 acres when first settled, with rent of 12 bushels of wheat, 2 fowls and 1 day riding. It was settled in 1735 with first rents due in 1741. By 1748, John Paddock seems to have been on part of the farm. It appears to be the farm just north of the Dolson's farm. Mathew was first taxed in the Middle Ward from 1736/37 and then in Beekman through 1753. He was also on the tax role in Rombout from 1743 through 1759. He was later taxed in Poughkeepsie in 1772 through 1774. He may have been at Egg Harbor, Atlantic Co., New Jersey between 1753 and 1772. He is mentioned in two Beekman road descriptions in 1742. In 1758, William Green sued Mathew Buys for an upaid debt, and he apparently left the area just after the suit. Mattheus and Catharina Buys were sponsors at New Hackensack baptisms in 1772 (Simeon Lossing and Margriet Van Keuren) and 1773 (Johannes Lassen, and Clara Lassen, with Catharina called Cathrina Lassen). On 4 May 1781, Mathew Buys and wife Catherine were in the Poughkeepsie jail for "comforting, aiding and abetting robbers" (Matthew was age 70 at the time and his wife almost 60). Catherine was "under sentence of death" but Judge Richard Morris recommended a pardon for her on 21 May 1781 to New York Governor Clinton, which was endorsed by several neighbors. On 19 May 1787 the Court of Common Pleas dealt with a matter affecting Matthew Buys, the previous case having dealt with the support for an indegent, the court ordered, "The like for Matthew Byce," ordering Zachariah Flagler, the husband of Matthew's daughter Elizabeth, "provide for said Buys as the law in that case directs." The Matthew Buys referred to in this case was of Poughkeepsie. He is not listed in the 1790 census, and if living was probably in the household of another family, possibly the Flaglers.3
  • Most of Mathew and Catharina's children were baptised by the New York Lutheran Minister who made frequent visits to the Clove area.4
