Cornelis Caljer1

b. circa 1670
  • Also known as Cornelis Colier.5
  • Also known as Cornelius Collier (Kings Co. Deed records of 1708-09).6
  • Cornelis Caljer witnessed the baptism of Marytje Brouwer , daughter of Abraham Brouwer and Cornelia Caljer, on 12 March 1699 at Old First Dutch Reformed Church, Breuckelen (Brooklyn), Kings Co., Long Island, New York, (sponsors Cornelis Caljer, Margrietie Pieters).7
  • Cornelis Caljer witnessed the baptism of Lysbet Brouwer , daughter of Nicholas Brouwer and Jannetje Caljer, on 18 June 1699 at Old First Dutch Reformed Church, Breuckelen (Brooklyn), Kings Co., Long Island, New York, (sponsors Cornelis Caljer, Geertruit Caljer).8
  • No record of his baptism has been found, but Cornelis is most probably a son of Jurain Caljer. He appears as a sponsor with Margrietje Pieters to the baptism of Marytje, daughter of Abraham and Cornrlia Brouwer in Brooklyn. Later he appears in Hackensack, New Jersey.9
  • On 16 Aug 1708, Cornelius Collier and Maryke, his wife, of Brooklyn, sold to Nicholas Brower of Brooklyn, a house and garden in Brooklyn, bounded east by the highway, west by the land of George Hanson, north by the land of William Brower, south by the land of Carel Debeavois. It appears, however, that Cornelius and his wife remained on the property with a mortgage that was retired with a payment of fifty-four pounds to Nicholas Brower on 17 Oct 1709. On that same date, an indenture is recorded by which Cornelius Collier and his wife Maryke convey this same house and garden to Abraham Brouwer and Nicholas Brouwer for 370 pounds.6
  • It is believed that Cornelis continued to reside at Kinderhook after his parents left for Bushwick, Long Island in about 1690. It is also thought that he married and had children at Kinderhook prior to 1699. He is not found on the census lists in Bushwick or Brooklyn in 1698, nor in the church records of that area until 12 Mar 1699 when he is a sponsor for a child of his sister, Cornelia Brouwer. His next appearance in the New York City/Long Island area is on 6 Feb 1708 when he and Marytie Cayler were sponsors at the New York RDC for a child of Philip Boyle and Catherine Van Gunst. On 10 Sep 1710, Cornelis Cayler, his wife Maritje "Rirdon" and daughter Jannetje were recorded as becoming members of the Hackensack, New Jersey Reformed Dutch Church; he with letters from Brooklyn and his wife upon confession of faith. Cornelis is recorded as a constable in Brooklyn in 1708, and as a resident in Bergen Co., New Jersey in 1710. In 1715 his daughter, Jannetje, was married at the Hackensack RDC. The assumption is that Cornelis had two wives, the first not as yet identified, and the second tentatively identified as Maritje Verdon, daughter of Jacob Verdon and Femmetje Willems Bennet.3
  • Cornelis Caljer was a member of the at Dutch Reformed Church, Hackensack, Bergen Co., New Jersey, on 30 September 1710.5
  • A competeing theory is that Margaret Caljer is a daughter of Cornelis Caljer (son of Jurian, and shown as a brother here), and that she was sent to live with her grandparents in about 1710.3

Maritje is recorded as Maritje "Rirdon" on 10 Sep 1710 when she is accepted into the Hackensack RDC along with her husband Cornelis Calyer and daughter Jannetje. Some have theorized that "Rirdon" is a misspelling of Verdon, and that Maritje is the daughter of Jacob Verdon and Femmetje Willems Bennet, baptized 13 Jun 1685 at the Flatbush RDC. If so she would have married Cornelis Calyer in about 1707 at the earliest, and would have then been his second marriage.. Hereinafter cited as Early Settlers of Bushwick.

Jurian Caljer1,2

b. 27 December 1696
  • Jurian Caljer was baptized on 27 December 1696 at Old First Dutch Reformed Church, Breuckelen (Brooklyn), Kings Co., Long Island, New York, sponsors Jeuriaen Caljer, Geertruijt Caljer.3
  • No record of a marriage, or of children has been found. It is conceivable that he is the father of James (or Jacobus) Calyer who founded the Bergen Co., New Jersey branch of the family. James, however, is thought to more likely be a son of Cornelis3 Caljer.1
  • Some accounts of this family have claimed that this Jurian died young and was followed by a second Jurian baptized on 27 Oct 1697 at Flatbush. However, there are no church records for that year in Flatbush, and the claim is probably an error.1

Margaret Caljer1

b. circa 1694, d. before October 1773
  • Margaret Caljer was born circa 1694.1
  • She married Daniel de Voe, son of Frederick de Vaux and Hester Tourneur, at Reformed Dutch Church, New York City, New York, on 6 August 1714 (lic. from Fordham, New York).1
  • Margaret Caljer died before October 1773.1
  • Margaret is possibly a daughter of Jurian Caljer. The argument also exists that she is the daughter of Jurian Caljer's son, Cornelis Caljer (and therefore a grandaughter of Jurian). There is no mistake that she belongs in this line, but her exact placement can not be determined. (See Early Settlers of Bushwick, Long Island v.2 p.21-22, and Colonial Families of Long Island, New York and Connecticut v.2, p.707).1
  • A competeing theory is that Margaret Caljer is a daughter of Cornelis Caljer (son of Jurian, and shown as a brother here), and that she was sent to live with her grandparents in about 1710.2

Marytje Caljer1

b. circa 1686
  • Marytje Caljer was possibly born circa 1686.
  • She is said to have married Steven Budet but this appears to be in error. (A. Provost, Early Settlers of Bushwick).1
  • Possible daughter. Marytje is "provisionally" placed in the family of Jurian Caljer by Early Settlers of Bushwick, Long Island, New York.1
  • Marytje Caljer witnessed the baptism of Cornelis Brouwer , son of Nicholas Brouwer and Jannetje Caljer, on 18 April 1705 at Reformed Dutch Church, New York City, New York, (sponsors Jan Hendricks, Marytje Coljer).2
  • Evidence for her existence is sketchy at best. The wife of Steven Budet was Mary Pootman (will of Claes Janse van Bochoven). The sponsor at the baptism of Elizabeth Budet (1711) was likely Maria (Van Gunst) Caljer, wife of Jochem Caljer.
