  • John Cooke died before February 1680 at Gravesend, Long Island; when his widow, "Sarah Cook, widow and executrix of her late husband, John Cook, deceased," authorized her son Obadiah Holmes of Staten Island to sell all the lands of her deceased husband in Gravesend.2
  • John Cooke came to Salem, Massachusetts in 1635, age 17, a servant, aboard the Abigail. He was a proprietor in Salem in 1636, and was made a Freeman there on 8 May 1642.3
  • John Cooke was among the first settlers at Gravesend, Long Island, when he received a house lot there on 20 Feb 1646. At Gravesend he was allotted plantation no.8 on 16 Mar 1650; contributed to the common charges on 17 Jan 1651; and appraised the estate of John Morris on 15 Jan 1656. He was elected shout (constable) at Gravesend on 20 Mar 1656, and Magistrate in Apr 1659. He was named as one of the patentees of the Monmouth Tract in New Jersey in Apr 1665, but apparently never settled there. In 1676, John Cooke and John Tilton both refused to take the oath, being Quakers, but gave their engagements.3
  • His will was dated on 15 March 1679 proved 11 Sep 1699, and 6 Jan 1702, called "John Cooke of Gravesend on the Island of Nassau," mentions his wife Sarah (named as executrix), daughter Sarah Whitman, daughter Elizabeth Holmes, and her husband Obadiah Holmes, and daughter Mary Stillwell.4,5

  • Stated by van Laer, Settlers of Rensselaerwyck, to have come to New Netherland by den Houttuyn. Sailed from the Texel in June 1642, arrived at New Amsterdam, August 4, 1642. "Cornelis Lambertsz, from Doorn, (near Utrecht), is given among those who were to sail with Domine Megapolensis on den Houttuyn in June 1642, but his name does not appear in the records of the colony (Rensselaerwijck). He probably remained at the Manhatans and soon thereafter died, as in the marriage records of the Reformed Dutch church of New York, under date of Sept. 4, 1644, is found the marriage of Wilhelm Bredenbent and Aeltje Braconie, widow of Corn. Lamberts."7
  • Cornelis Lambertszen Cool was living in May 1642; and is spoken of in the records as being deceased 30 Dec 1643, and on 5 Jan 1644 when legal steps were taken resulting in the partition of his estate.9
  • On 5 January 1644 Before Cornelis van Tienhoven, secretary of New Netherland, appeared Aeltjen Brackogne, widow of the late Cornelis Lambersen Cool, of the first part, and Gerrit Wolphersen and Claes Jansen from Emden, each of whom married a daughter of the late Cornelis Lambersen Cool, of the second part, who acknowledge that in love and friendship they had agreed and covenanted respecting the division of the goods and chattels which the aforesaid Cornelis Lambersen left behind, on the following conditions. (The conditions being that the parties acknowledge that they have divided and apportioned the movable and immovable property. That Aeltjen Brackongne pays Gerrit Wolphersen and Claes Jansen and additional 200 guilders, and that Gerrit Wolphersen and Claes Jansen acknowledge that they are fully satisfied and paid. Also that Aeltjen Brackongne shall pay all debts incurred by her deceased husband and that she shall receive all debts due her deceased husband. It is also stipulated that the property at Gowanus shall remain undivided until (through the mercy of God) the lands there may be used, when the parties shall enter upon the partition thereof. Aeltjen Brackongne, Gerrit Wolphersen and Claes Jansen all sign by their mark. Witnessed by Huych Aertsen van Rossom and Willem de Key.11
