Those signing the declaration were 1-Acknowledging Dom. G. Haeghoort as their legal regular pastor and teacher, according to the constitution of the Low Dutch Reformed Church. 2- That they will display and conduct themselves willingly in all respects as members of the Reformed Low Dutch congregation at Friholt and Middletown under the supervision of their pastor Do. Haeghoort. 3- That they will contribute freely from time to time according to their means, whatever is needed to carry on the church and services. In effect, those signing the declaration could be described as Members of the Low Dutch Reformed Congregations of Freehold and Middletown. The first couple of dozen or so names appear at 23:93, 94, as "Church Members," and then are repeated at 24:20 with the above clarification.. Joris Couwenhoven1

b. circa 1695
  • Joris Couwenhoven was probably born circa 1695 at Brooklyn, Kings Co., Long Island, New York.3,4
  • He married Aeltje Luyster, daughter of Cornelius Pietersz Luyster and Sara Nevius, at Reformed Protestant Dutch Church, Flatbush, Kings Co., Long Island, New York, on 26 May 1719 (Banns 1 May 1719).5
  • Also known as Joris van Couwenhoven.5
  • Also known as Joris Kouwenhoven.6
  • Also known as Joris Kouenhoven.7
  • Also known as Joris Van Kouwenhoven.8
  • Joris Couwenhoven was Deacon at Reformed Dutch Congregations, Freehold and Middletown, Monmouth Co., New Jersey, on 3 September 1727.9
  • He witnessed the baptism of a daughter Couwenhoven , daughter of William Couwenhoven and Ariantje Bennet, on 1 January 1728 at Reformed Dutch Congregations, Freehold and Middletown, Monmouth Co., New Jersey, (witness: Joris Kouenhoven).10
  • Joris Couwenhoven was a member of the at Reformed Dutch Congregations, Freehold and Middletown, Monmouth Co., New Jersey, on 23 August 1731 "at Friholt" (Freehold).11
  • Joris is a supposed son of Gerrit Couwenhoven and a presumed wife named Aeltie (also unidentified). A lengthy explanation of for this supposition and earlier placements of Joris within the Van Kouwenhoven family is discussed in NYGBR v.71 (1940) p.157, by Lincoln C. Cocheu.
A continuation of this family in NYGBR 81:123-25 states that Joris lived in Brooklyn (there on 26 May 1719). The genealogical summary of his children places their families in Monmouth County, Middletown (Middlesex Co.) and Readington, New Jersey. It's likely that Joris moved his family to New Jersey in the 1720s.
  • Cocheu adds to Joris' family, "a daughter" baptized 1 Jan 1729. It appears that he misread the record in the Freehold-Middletown records. Joris was a witness on 1 Jan 1728 for a daughter (unnamed) of William Kouwenhoven.12,7
