  • In 1623/24 Jesse des Forest contacted the State General "to enroll people, being of the Christian reformed religion and willing to make the journey to the West Indies for improvement and service in the W.I. Company."3
  • He was sailed on 1 July 1623 from Amsterdam, aboard the ship Pigeon, along with ten other heads of Walloon families, for South America, to select a suitable place for the Leyden Walloons to settle. The ship departed from Texel on 16 July 1623 along with a companion vessel, the yacht Mackeral, made for Plymouth, England, whence they sailed on 31 August 1623. Near the Madeira Islands the ships parted company on 14 September with the Pigeon continuing towards South America and the Mackeral proceeding to the West Indies. After spending weeks in the Caribbean in search of Spanish prize, the Mackeral sailed north and reached the Hudson River on 21 December 1623. The ship wintered near present day Albany and left in 1624 at a time "when the grain was nearly as high as a man."5
