In this record Pearson inserts [De Graaf] after the name of Klaas Andriese. The surname, De Graaf, apparently is not included in the original document. Claas de Graaf

b. 1628, d. 1697
  • Claas de Graaf was said to be born in 1628 according to Jonathan Pearson based upon a deposition of 22 Feb 1655 in which "Klaas Andriese" is said to be aged about 27. But, Pearson likely identified the wrong man.1,2,3
  • He married Elisabeth Brouwer, daughter of Willem Brouwer and Lysbeth Drinkvelt, circa 1680.4,5
  • Claas de Graaf died in 1697; (as per Hoffman Manuscript Notes, perhaps following Pearson, which may be based upon his wife, Elizabeth Brouwer, appearing as a head of household in 1697. No probate records have been found for Claas de Graaf).6
  • Also known as Claes Andriesz Graef.7
  • Also known as Claas Andriesse de Graaf.8
  • Also known as Claas Graven.4
  • "Class Andriese De Graaf, another son of Andries De Graaf," was born about the year 1628, and became one of the first settlers of Schenectady, taking up land at the Hoek, in Scotia, where for several generations the family resided.
He probably died about 1697, in shich year his wife leased her farm to Jonathan Stevens and Daniel Mascraft.2
  • Claas de Graaf is a possible son of Andries de Graaf.
  • On 22 February 1655 Klaas Andriese [De Graaf] aged about twenty-seven years, appeared (with Ryck Ridders, aged about thirty-seven years) appeared before Pieter Ryverdingh, clerk, at the court of Fort Orange gave a deposition regarding an assault on Steven Janse by Harmen (surname unknown).3
  • He was an early settler at Schenectady, lived in Glenville at he Hoek (later owned by D. F. Reese. There was another "Claes Graven's Hoek," was on the north bank of the Mohawk River, just west of the bounds of Schenectady county, lying in Cuyler's Patent.9
  • On 2 November 1682 Willem Ghysbertse and Claes Andriesz Graef witnessed a contract between Symon Volckertsen Veeder, whereby Veeder exchanges his lot called De Hoeck and one-half of the lot on which he dwells at Schenectady for Jacob Casparsen Halenbeck's farm on the Normans Kill.7
  • An account of Claas de Graaf and his wife Elizabeth's capture by local Indians and their subsequent escape is described in Susan J. Staffa's, Schenectady Genesis, How a Dutch Colonial Village Became an American City, c.1661-1800 (Purple Mountain Press, 2004):
"Claes Andriessen de Graaf settled west of Glen on Graven Hoek in the Schenectady Bouwlands. So some of the early people lived outside of the Schenectady village. He was of French Huguenot extraction.
A family tradition, found in the “Diary” of Harriet Bowers Mumford Paige (Book O, pages 37 - 39, Schenectady Historical Society.) says that this region was still the territory of roving bands of Indians:
“He was taken prisoner with his wife and little son [Jesse] by the Indians, and carried by them to their encampment up the river. After they had been captives for some time Mrs. de Graff began from time to time, as she had opportunity, to parch corn and pound it and lay it away by stealth in a bag. Her husband and child every day accompanied the Indians out in their canoes to hunt and fish, and she was left behind to cook. One night the Indians all came home drunk and lay about the floor almost insensible in the liquor - she told her husband that now would be the time for them to escape. He said that the Indians would pursue and catch them and kill them. She replied that they might as well die as be prisoners and so they set off in a canoe with the child and the pounded corn, and rowed down the river all night, as morning began to dawn, they drew the boat up in a hollow sheltered place and hid it and themselves . Not long after, they heard the Indians pursuing them over their heads and not finding them they, after a while, went back again. When night came they came out of their hiding place, drew out the canoe and rowed down the river again and so they made their escape boating by night and hiding away by day until at last they rowed into Schenectady."10
  • Jonathan Pearson in First Settlers of Schenectady (page 55) states that Claas de Graaf had a daughter, Rebecca, born in 1701, and a son, Claes, born in 1709. William Hoffman in his manuscript notes states that Claas de Graaf died in 1697, but does not provide a source. If Hoffman is correct, then the children, Rebecca and Claes, cannot be children of Claas de Graaf. There is no record of baptism for either, Rebecca or Claes, in either Schenectady or Albany. Their birth dates are as per Pearson, his source not stated.
  • Rebecca de Graaf is claimed to be a daughter of Claas de Graaf by Jonathan Pearson in Genealogies of the Descendants of the First Settlers of the Patent and City of Schenectady from 1662 to 1800 (Albany: J. Munsell, 1873), page 55. He gives a birthdate of 28 Feb 1701, which would be four years after the believed death of Claas de Graaf. Pearson does not give a source for the date of birth, or for her placement in the family of Claas de Graaf. No record of baptism can be found in the published records of either the Reformed Church records at Schenectady or Albany. No further record of Rebecca has been identified.
  • Claes de Graaf is claimed as a son of Claas de Graaf by Jonathan Pearson in Genealogies of the Descendants of the First Settlers of the Patent and City of Schenectady from 1662 to 1800 (Albany: J. Munsell, 1873), page 55. He gives a birthdate of 4 Aug 1709, which would be twelve years after the believed death of Claas de Graaf. Pearson does not give a source for the date of birth, or for his placement in the family of Claas de Graaf. No record of baptism can be found in the published records of either the Reformed Church records at Schenectady or Albany. In 1734 a Claes de Graaf was witness to the baptism of Wilhelmus, son of Abraham de Graaf and Rebecca Groot. This witness, however, may be Claes de Graaf, bapt. 25 Dec 1706 at Schenectady, son of Jesse de Graaf and Aeltje Akkermans.

In this record Pearson inserts [De Graaf] after the name of Klaas Andriese. The surname, De Graaf, apparently is not included in the original document. Claes de Graaf1

b. 4 August 1709
  • Claes de Graaf was born on 4 August 1709 (date as per Pearson, not confirmed).1
