  • Frederick de Veaux, along with his parents and two brothers, Nicholas and David, escaped La Rochelle for Manheim, Germany. Frederick grew up there and was married there in 1673. On 23 Feb 1675 he obtained a passport from the city of Manheim and by way of England, reached New York City, settling at New Harlem where his two brothers had settled earlier. He went on to acquire much land in Harlem, and in Westchester County at Fordham and Morrisania. In 1718 he purchased 200 acres in the East Division at New Rochelle, from his daughter Leah Gendron who was then a widow. In 1719 he purchased an adjoining 100 acres from Susanna Coutant. The farms were soon occupied by his son, Abel De Veaux.12

  • In August 1679 "Inasmuch as Titus Syrachs De Vries, captain of the company from Midwood, had unseemly behaved himself with a young maiden, Annetje Dirks, forcing her to commit adultery, the minister called a general consistory of the elders of the four villages." On 10 Feb 1680 it was decided that Titus Sijrachsz be earnestly "exhorted to improvement and the enormity of his sin set before him." He was excluded from the Lord's Supper so long as he exhibits no better sign of repentance.1
