Ephraim Allen1

b. 30 December 1671, d. between 8 November 1726 and 10 February 1727
  • Ephraim Allen was born on 30 December 1671 at Sandwich, Massachusetts.2
  • He married first say 1694 a wife (name unknown).3
  • Ephraim Allen married second circa November 1703 Elizabeth Maddocks, daughter of John Maddocks and Elizabeth.3
  • Ephraim Allen married third at New Jersey in July 1726 or August 1726 Hannah Johnson, daughter of William Johnson and Elizabeth.3
  • Ephraim Allen died between 8 November 1726 and 10 February 1727 at Alloways Creek, Salem Co., New Jersey; (date of will and inventory).
  • Ephraim came with his father to Shrewsbury about 1685, and lived there and at Freehold. At the March 1695/96 term before the Monmouth County Court of Sessions he was indicted as the father of an illegitimate child of Mary Wainwright. It was an unusual case in that the jury found him guilty according to the evidence, but not guilty according to the law. The Court refused to accept this verdict and the jury later found "for plaintiff." The situation that prompted the unusual first verdict is not known. It may be that Ephraim had married Mary before the case came to trial and that she was the otherwise unknown mother of his first four children and died before 1703.
In March 1696/97 Ephraim is described as "of Freehold." He later moved to the vicinity of Great Egg Harbor, and finally to Munmouth River (Alloways Creek), Salem Co. in 1703. When, at the Salem Monthly Meeting, he declared his intention to marry Elizabeth Powell, he produced a certificate from Friends of Egg Harbour. He was a member of the Salem Co. Grand Jury in Sep 1706. Was overseer of the poor for Munmouth Precinct, 1707/8 and later overseer of highways. His name is frequent in the records as a witness or executor for wills. In 1715 he was a private in the company of Capt. Daniel Rumsey, Salem Co. An old family Bilbe gives the ages of four children at the time the entries were made in 1703.3
  • He was named in his father's will dated on 15 September 1711 also mentions Ephraim's son Joseph and daughter Dinah.4
  • His will was dated on 8 November 1726 proved 21 Feb 1726/27. Ephraim Allen of Allaways Creek. Names wife Hannah; sons James, Beniamen, Joseph, Isack (under age), daughter Uesty Powell with whom Aubitha Allen is to live until 16 and then to be free. Real and personal estate. Executors: his wife and sons James and Beniamen. Wit.: John White, Sam'l Wade, Jr. Lib. 2, page 421.5
  • Inventory of estate taken on 10 February 1726/27 Personal estate, £215.5.11, includes 3 Bibles, 2 Concordances and other books, £3.3, made by Samuel Wade and James Chamless.5

  • Joseph Allen died after 1766; either at Shrewsbury or in Salem County, New Jersey.3
  • He was named in his father's will dated on 8 November 1726.4
  • Gardiner states, "The history of this Joseph is exceedingly difficult to trace, as there are several contemporaries of the same name, and it is hoped that some records still tobe discovered may throw additional light on his history."
Joseph was taken to Salem County in his infancy by his father and grew up in the Quaker faith. By his grandfather's 1711 will he inherited two tracts of land at Shrewsbury in Monmouth Co. As a young man he started shifting back and forth between Salem and Monmouth Counties. On 15 Apr 1720, Joseph Allen of Shrewsbury, a single man, agreed with Gabriel Stelle as to a boundary between their two "plantations." This boundary appears tobe the same as the tract of land granted to Jedediah Allen in 1697, and while the acerage is different, this may be the inherited property. On 24 Aug 1722, Joseph sold land in the same vicinity to his uncle David Allen. On 28 Jan 1722/23 at the Salem Meeting, his request for a certificate of "clearness" in relation to marriage was approved, and at Shrewsbury on 6 May 1723 he and "Anmarcy Woolly" were granted leave to marry. He was in Salem County in 1725 and 1726, but on 26 Feb 1727/28 expressed his intention to move to Shrewsbury and a certificate was granted. At Shrewsbury he appears tobe close to his Uncle David Allen's family.
If the second stated marriage is correct, then as per the marriage bond (1742/43) Joseph is stated as of Upper Freehold, a blacksmith.
Joseph Allen did not leave a will and the list of his children is a bit uncertain and probably incomplete.3

Family: Ann Mercy Woolley b. 3 Feb 1702/3, d. a 1732
