The current town of Owego was formed in 1800 as the Town of Tioga (from the Town of Union in present day Broome Co.). In 1813 the legislature had the old Town of Owego and the Town of Tioga switch names so that the Village of Owego would fall within the jurisdiction of the Town of Owego to avoid confusion (the Village of Owego had originally fallen within the Town of Tioga). The new Town of Owego is now east of it's original location and the new Town of Tioga is now west of it's original location.
  • Tioga County, New York was formed from Montgomery County, New York in 1791. In 1798 Chemung County, New York was created out of Tioga County.
