  • He and Maria Louwerse Tours were members of the at Protestant Dutch Reformed Church, Acquackanonk (Passaic), Essex Co., New Jersey, in 1738 as Cornelis Dreak and Mareytje Dreak, by confession of faith.6
  • Lillian Drake Avery, in Drake Genealogy in the Line of Samuel (p.18) places Gerardus Drake in the family of Cornelis Drake and Maria Tours. She gives no reason or authority, and no record of birth or baptism for Gerardus Drake has ever been found. It is more likely that she found records of Gerardus Drake, in Essex and Morris Counties, New Jersey, and then simply assumed that the mentioned Gerardus must belong to Cornelis Drake's family. A closer look at the records, however, demonstrates that this Gerardus had an adult son (Gerardus, Jr.) by 1750, implying that he would be too old to have been a son of Cornelis.7

"Cornelius appeared on the Hanover Township, Morris Co., NJ, Tax Rolls from 1786 to 1807. An abstract of a Morris Co., NJ, pension application dated 12 July 1824 states that Cornelius "enlisted for the term of one year on 14 February 1776 in the company commanded by Peter Dickerson in the 3rd Jersey Regiment commanded by Colonel Elias Dayton on the Continental Establishment - that at the expiration of the year he enlisted again in the same company and continued to serve until the disbanding of the army in 1783 - that he was present at the affair of the Short Hills in Essex County State of New Jersey in the year 1777. That he was engaged in the battles of Brandywine, Germantown, and Monmouth and that he was present at the taking of Cornwallis at Yorktown and that he served in the Western Campaign in the year 1779 against the Indians under General Sullivan - that his named had been placed on the pension list and dropped there from on account of his property ... that he has a grandson and a daughter from whom he has received some little assistance - that his employment is a farmer and that he has hitherto been able to rent a small place but that in consequence of his advanced age (he being sixty nine years and nearly nine months old) that profits he is able to devise from that pursuit had become entirely inadequate to his maintenance." On 29 September 1824, Cornelius Drake, being duly sworn in open court, stated, among other things, that he had bought a small house and lot of land in Morris County in 1807 and that he continued to live on said place until 1822, when he sold it and bought a small place in Roxbury township, expecting to pay the balance of the purchase price "by coleing and cutting wood off the place; but the sickness and death of a part of his family disables him from making the residue of the payments and compelled him to give up the place to the vendor and loose all of his first payment (two hundred and ten dollars) except ten dollars." • On 12 September 1840 Codicil to will of 22 Jan 1831. All advances made to said children since my will was written are to be accounted for and deducted from what each was bequeathed by my executors. Also, since one executor is deceased and another moved from the area, I now appoint my friends Ebenezer Foster and Oliver B. Houser as executors. Witnessed by Wm. L. Foster, Michael C. Denton.14
  • On 14 June 1850 Ebenezer Foster, one of the executors for the will of David G. Drake, petitions the Orange County Surrogate's Court, asking for the will to be proved. Probate scheduled for 5 Aug 1850, ordered to appear are: Sarah Rhodes, James Holbert and Susan his wife, Phebe Dains, David H. Drake and George W. Drake all of Chester in Orange County; Joseph Drake of Warwick, Orange Co; Frances Holbert, and Luther Meacham and Hannah his wife of Binghamton, Broome Co., New York; Clarissa Knapp of Centreville in St. Joseph's Co., Michigan; Abigail Egbert of Milford in Kosciusko Co., Michigan; Jonah Cooper and Emily his wife of Canal Louisville in Coshocton Co., Ohio; Calvin Rhodes and Mary Jane his wife of Middletown, Susquehanna Co., Pennsylvania; and John Smith and Frances his wife of Wantage, Sussex Co., New Jersey, heirs at law and next of kin of David G. Drake of Chester, Orange Co., New York.14
  • Will proved on 5 August 1850 The proving of David G. Drake's will is lengthy as each witness was cross examined by attorneys for his daughters Hannah and Susan. Each witnessed was questioned as to the sobriety of David G. Drake at the time he made both his will and codicil. Apparently David G. Drake had a reputation as a heavy drinker, often intoxicated for sustained periods of time. All witnessed testified that he was sober at the time the will and codicil were written. Ebenezer Foster testified that David G. Drake was married twice, and that his second wife was living at the time the will was written (22 Jan 1831). However, she is not mentioned in the will and no provisions are made for her, and according to her gravestone she died in 1829, at age 45.15
