• Gerardus Drake was probably born before 1730.

• Aaron Drake and Gerardus Drake, were refugees from Sag Harbor, called "of Old Farm," who took refuge at East Haddam during the Revolutionary War.¹
• His will was dated on 25 April 1786 proved 21 Feb 1787. Gerrardus Drake of Southampton Twp., Suffolk County. Names his wife Martha, son Aaron, daughters Loraney Thompson, Martha Brown and Elizabeth Becket. Mentions real and personal property. Names as executors his wife, and son Aaron. Witnessed by Daniel Gibbs, Joseph Russell, and Edmund Perry.²
• Refugees of 1776 from Long Island to Connecticut states: "From Sag Harbor to Hadlyme and East Haddam in 1776. On 21 Oct 1782 he was allowed to return to Long Island with his family, wearing apparel, and provisions. He was brought back by Capt. Josiah Burnham.
  In 1756 he settled with his family two miles west of Sag Harbor, on Noyac Bay, Town of Southampton. In the fall of 1776, likely in September, Garrardus put his farm by written contract, in the care of Paul Payne; and taking his family with him, passed over to Connecticut and remained there until 1782, when he returned to his farm. William Thompson who married his second daughter Martha (note: this conflicts with Gerardus' 1786 will) was also a refugee in company with the Drake family. The two families sojourned at Hadlyme, Conn., the home of Moses Drake, the oldest son of Garrardus (note: no son Moses is named in Gerardus Drake's 1786 will). On Nov. 22, 1782 they were still at East Haddam; for on that date Garrardus made his will, dating it East Haddam (note: the 1786 will of Gerardus Drake of Southampton is on file in Albany. It may be that Gerardus wrote two wills). It is evident from this that he remained in Connecticut for a month, or more, after he had been given permission to return to Long Island."
  The account then goes on to cite Gerardus in the 1776 census with 1 male over 50, 1 above 16, 1 under 16, and 3 females above 16. The account states that "He was born before 1700; was about 90 when he went to Connecticut; d. at Sag Harbor, May 20, 1797, aged 112." We know from the probate of his will that Gerardus died before 21 Feb 1787. No evidence is given for his birth prior to 1700, and the claim is unlikely.³
• John Drake and Gerardus Drake, are both found in Southampton, Long Island during the second half of the 1700's.
• Gerardus Drake is claimed as a son of Gerardus Drake Sr. in Refugees of 1776 from Long Island to Connecticut, but this is not certain and the book demonstrates it's unreliability by claiming a very unlikely account of the elder Gerardus Drake's ancestry from a supposed brother of Sir Francis Drake, and claiming that Gerardus was aged 112 when he died in 1797.³

Gerardus Drake Sr.¹

• Gerardus Drake Sr. was probably born between 1698 and 1708.
• He married Elizabeth Disbrow, daughter of Henry Disbrow and Mary Griffin, before April 1727.
• Gerardus Drake Sr. probably married second Sarah Beach on 27 February 1753 at Hanover Presbyterian Church, Morris Co., New Jersey, The Hanover Presb. Church record calls the couple "Gerardus Drake and Sarah Beach."^2,3
• Gerardus Drake Sr. probably died between 8 July 1773 and 6 August 1773 This assumes that he is correctly identified as the Gerardus Drake who left a will in 1773.

• Gerardus Drake first appears in any record, as a married adult, on 19 March 1727/28 at Mamaroneck, Westchester Co., New York. He is recorded there as a weaver as late as 15 Oct 1738 (Westchester Co. Land Recs. F:206, G:274, 286). In then appears that he is the Gerardus Drake found at Newark, Essex Co., New Jersey in 1748 and as late as 1753 when he married Sarah Beach. He states that he was of Beekman Prect., Dutchess County, New York in his will of 1773, and he was likely the Gerardus Drake taxed at Fishkill, Dutchess County from 1767 to 1773.
• On 19 March 1727 at Mamaroneck, Westchester Co., New York, Henry Disbrow conveyed to Gerardus Drake Sr. land bordering that of Capt. Henry Fowler. "Henry Disbrow of Mamaroneck to son-in-law Gerardus Drake, and Elizabeth his wife."⁴
• On 5 Jun 1729, Gerardus Drake and Benjamin Griffin were sworn to testify in a land dispute between Henry Disbrow, Jr. and Capt. Henry Fowler, Jr., involving land at Mamaroneck.⁵
• On 9 January 1730 Henry Disbrow conveyed to Gerardus Drake Sr. "Henry Disbrow of Mamaroneck, yeoman, Gerardus Drake, yeoman, of the same place," land in great lot no.4, in Mamaroneck, "granted to me by my father Henry Disbrow." Witnessed by John Mott, and Alexander Burne. Acknowledged by John Mott of New York, 15 May 1754.⁶
• He was a bondsman for the estate of Jane on 30 September 1748 at Essex Co., New Jersey; (Jane Butler of Newtown, Queens Co., Long Island) to her son Thomas Butler of Westchester Co., New York. Bond of Thomas Butler. Gerardus Drake, fellow bondsman.⁷
• Gerardus Drake Sr. was a bondsman for the estate of Petrus Van Blarkham on 31 March 1749 at Essex Co., New Jersey; granted to John Van Blarkham, Junr., eldest son. Gerrardus Drake, fellow bondsman.⁸
• Gerardus Drake, Sr., and Gerardus Drake, Jr., along with Andrew Johnston, Lewis Johnston, John Burnet, John Cleaves, Jonathan Hampton and Isaac Winchell, were named as defendants in a case involving the original rights to lands in Newark, East Jersey. The case mentions arguments previously published in the "Weekly Post Boy," in February, March and April, 1746, and events dating from March and November 1747, as well as a deed dated December 1751.⁹

First and principally I recommend my soul in the hands of God who gave it hoping for salvation through Jesus Christ my redemer and my body to the earth to be buried in a Christian like and decent manner at the descretion of my executors here in after named and as touching such wordley estate where with it hath loeased God to bless me with I will and dispose of the same in the following manner. My will is that my just debts be fully paid and satisfied within some convenient time after my decease out of such part of my estate as in herein after described. Item I give and bequeath unto my well beloved wife Sarah all my estate that shall remain over and above paying my debts. Lastly I appoint for executors of this my last will and testament my wife Sarah Drake and Benjamin Griffin hereby revoking all former will or wills by me here to for made acknowledging this and no other to be my last will and testament in testimoney where of I the said Gerardus Drake to this my last will and testament at my hand and assigned my seal this eight day of July in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and seventy three. Signed by Gerarus Drake. Witnessed by Jonathan Thorn, Anne Cromm (called Anne Brown at the proving) and Gabriel Smith.¹²
• His will was dated on 8 July 1773 proved 6 Aug 1773. Gerrardus Drake of Beekmans Precinct, Dutchess County, "aged". Names his wife Sarah as the sole heiress. Makes his wife and Benjamin Griffin, executors.^13,12
• Gerardus Drake Sr. is claimed as a son of John Drake in Settlers of the Beekman Patent which takes the claim from James A. Rasmussen, "John Drake of Eastchester, NY" TAG 60 (1984): 115. This appears to be based simply on the fact that Gerardus and John share the same surname, and they are found in Westchester County at the same time (although in different towns). Rasmussen calls Gerardus a "probable son," reports on a number of documents and references to both Gerardus and John, but does not describe any that would actually link the two in any type of family relationship. Of all the records left by John Drake, his father Samuel and his other sons, NONE demonstate any relationship with a Gerardus Drake. IT IS MORE LIKELY THAT GERARDUS DRAKE IS NOT A MEMBER OF ANY FAMILY DESCENDEND FROM SAMUEL DRAKE OF EASTCHESTER.
• Gerardus Drake Sr. is a possible son of Josias Janszen Drats. Gerardus Drake is first mentioned in 1727 when he is married to Elizabeth, the daughter of Henry Disbrow. This would place the likely year of his birth before 1707, probably in the decade of 1697-1707, well within the time frame in which Josias Drats could be considered his father. The argument in favor of this placement centers around the unusual name, Gerardus. Josias Drats' son Cornelis is likely to have had a son named Gerardus. The only other Gerardus known at the time was Col./Dr. Gerardus Beekman, who owned property adjoing Adam Brouwer's mill property. Gerardus Beekman later sold this property to Josias' brother-in-laws, Nicholas and Abraham Brouwer. As all children of this time were named for someone (usually family, but at times for friends) it is conceivable that Gerardus Drake was named for Gerardus Beekman. Another argument in favor of this placement would be location. Mamaroneck, were Gerardus is first found, was settled by families previously found in Queens County, Long Island (where as Eastchester was settled by families from Fairfield, Connecticut). Josias Drats, his son John Drake, and a Josias Drake (either father or son) are all found in Queens County prior to 1727 (specifically in Newtown, Jamaica, and Oyster Bay). No stronger evvidence has yet been found, and for now the idea that Gerardus is a son of Josias Janszen Drats can only remain a possibility.

• Lillian Drake Avery, in Drake Genealogy in the Line of Samuel (p.18) places Gerardus Drake in the family of Cornelis Drake and Maria Tours. She gives no reason or authority, and no record of birth or baptism for Gerardus Drake has ever been found. It is more likely that she found records of Gerardus Drake, in Essex and Morris Counties, New Jersey, and then simply assumed that the mentioned Gerardus must belong to Cornelis Drake's family. A closer look at the records, however, demonstrates that this Gerardus had an adult son (Gerardus, Jr.) by 1750, implying that he would be too old to have been a son of Cornelis.¹⁵
