- "James Duke, descendant of Col. William Duke, an officer of cavalry in the army of William of Orange, who came into Ireland in 1691, was a cousin of John Duke, Sr., of Berkeley Co., Virginia. James Duke evidently belonged to a family of Dukes that were living in Newry Parish, Newry Barony, County Down, Ireland, where one Mark Duke is listed among "Protestant Householders," in 1740; and in 1781, one Mark Duke is found among the list of "Taxable Freemen" in Cumberland Co., Pennsylvania in MIddletown Township, where he owned much property. This circumstance is mentioned because it was this same township that the above James Duke came and settled after the War of the Revolution in 1785. It is possible that Mark and James were brothers, perhaps, father and son."1
- James Duke sailed from Warren's Point at Newry River, County Down, Ireland, 13 June 1774, and landed at Philadelphia nine weeks and three days later. He was a soldier in the Revolution, enlisting as a substitute, at Philadelphia, 25 June 1777, in Capt. Peter Mehrling's Company, 2nd Battalion of Foot in Philadelphia Brigade, commanded by Col. Sharp Delaney. He was mustered out at Billingsport, New Jersey, 12 July 1777. He also served in 1780 in Capt. Nathaniel Twinings's Co., 5th Battalion of Volunteers, Philadelphia, and discharged from Capt. Jacob Bower's seven months men, 6th Pennsylvania Continental Line, 26 Aug 1780.1
- On 8 June 1799 James and Judith Duke conveyed a lot in the town of Charlestown, Virginia, to Margaret Worthington, which was formerly the property of "Capt. Samuel and Dorothea Washington. (Samuel being the son of Maj. Charles Washington and Mildred Thornton, the man for whom Charles Town is named).1
