- Samuel Ellis died on 11 July 1794.1,3
- Samuel Ellis and Catherine Dempsey, were not married. They had three children together during the time that Samuel's wife, Mary Brower, was alive.
- His will was dated on 4 July 1794 proved 12 Jul 1794 in New York City, and 22 Jul 1794 in Bergen County, New Jersey. (Abstracts published in WNYHS 14:263-4 and NJA 37:124 both have errors, for a transcript of the full will see NYGBR 119:68).3
- The origins of Samuel Ellis are not known. Ellis Island, previously called Dyre's Island, Bucking Island and Little Oyster Island, located in Upper New York Bay, the location of the busiest immigration station in the U. S. from 1892 to 1954, was named for Samuel Ellis, the island's last private owner. Samuel Ellis lived in Manahattan, Ulster County, New York, and Bergen County, New Jersey. He owned Ellis Island prior to 1785 although the exact date on which he acquired ownership has not been discoverd. He offered the island for sale on 30 Jan 1785. It dis not sell and he left the island by bequest in his will of 1794. In 1808 the island came into full possession of the Federal Government.
Samuel Ellis was a joiner and was made a Freeman of New York City on 7 Nov 1757. A second man named Samuel Ellis also lived in NYC at this time, he was a butcher, had a wife Mary who had a son, James E. Millet, commonly called, "James Ellis."2 - Baptism or birth records for the children of Samuel Ellis and Mary Brower have not been found.5
