Joseph Gee1,2

b. 1731/32, d. before 1810
  • Joseph Gee was born in 1731/32 at Eastchester, Westchester Co., New York.4
  • He married Rachel circa 1753.5
  • Joseph Gee married second circa 1777 Mary Turner, daughter of Edmund Turner and Hannah Brouwer, (date estimated based on the claim that Mary had ten children and she was born ca. 1747, thus likely did not have children after 1795).6
  • Joseph Gee possibly died before 1810 at Delaware Co., New York.
  • He was found on the tax list at Southern Precinct, Dutchess Co., New York, in 1754 (he is last here on the tax list in 1767).5
  • Joseph Gee moved to at Plattekill Valley, Ulster Co., New York, between 1767 and 1768.5
  • He was a Revolutionary War soldier. Served as a private in Swart's Co., Snyder's Regt. of New York Line, and also in Wynkoop's Regt. and in Wessenfel's Regt.5
  • He appeared on the census in 1790 at Middletown, Ulster Co., New York, with a household of 5 males under 16, 3 males over 16 and 4 females.7
  • Joseph Gee moved to at Colchester, Delaware Co., New York, circa 1796.5
  • He appeared on the census in 1800 at Colchester, Delaware Co., New York, with a household of 1 male under 10, 1 male 10-15, 2 males 16-25, 1 male over 45, 2 females under 10,1 female 16-25.5,8
  • Robert E. Gee covered Joseph Gee in "The Gee Family of Westchester and Dutchess Counties, N. Y." in NYGBR vol. 133 (1982), pp. 133-134. The author was unaware that Joseph Gee had been married twice and makes no mention of his second wife, Mary Turner. Six children are listed for Joseph Gee, all attributed to his first wife, Rachel. Son, Reuben's age is over stated by 16 years. The article state that Joseph Gee died in Schuyler, Herkimer Co., New York soon after 1810, and claims that he is on the 1810 census there. The census record, however, lists a man named Joseph GAY (as well as a Roswell GAY) who is also there on the 1800 census, which is when Joseph GEE is found in Delaware County. It is not likely that Joseph Gee went to Herkimer County.

Probable daughter based upon a historical anecdote that mentions an "Aunt Sally Gee" living in Orange County, New York during the Revolutionary War and was within sight of the burning of Fort Montgomery by the British in 1777. It is hypothesized that "Aunt Sally" was an unmarried daughter of William Gee and was living with or near her brother Cornelius or John.. Hereinafter cited as "Gee Family."
