Nicholas Gesner1

b. 10 December 1765, d. 1858
  • Nicholas Gesner was born on 10 December 1765.2
  • He was baptized on 26 January 1766 at Tappan Reformed Church, Tappan, New York, sponsors Elisabet Gisner, wife of Jacob Conkelin, Jr.2
  • He married Gracie Post, daughter of Abraham Post and Rebecca Gracey.1
  • Nicholas Gesner died in 1858.3
  • Nicholas was a mechanic and shipbuilder. He invented a loom for weaving the Dutch double-faced blankets and bed covers. As a young adult he taught school near his home, was frequently called upon to draw up legal papers for his neighors, and was a surveyor. His diary covers a period of twenty-one years from 1830 until 1851, and in 1912 was housed at the Palisades Library. In 1811 he was first a major in Lieut. Col. Blauvelt's regiment of Rockland County, New York, and in 1816 was promoted to colonel in the 160th NY Regt. As early as 1798 he had held the rank of ensign in the Rockland County militia.4
  • Nicholas Gesner and Robert Pitcairn, exchanged a series of letters in the early 1850s regarding the status of the lawsuits against the Trinity Church Corp. In the letters Nicholas Gesner speaks of the length of time (over twenty years) and the cost (one number mentioned being $9000) he has invested in the efforts, and his disatisfaction of how nothing has come of it all.5
  • In February 1857 Nicholas Gesner resided at Orange, Rockland Co., New York.
  • In the 1840's, Nicholas Gesner, and other family members spent considerable time and money in an effort to recover possession of the Trinity Church (NYC) property. Apparently, Nicholas believed he was descended from the fabled Anneke Jans, wife of Dom. Everardus Boargdus, through their daughter Anneke Bogardus who married Jacob Brouwer. The Gesner family mistakenly believed that Adolphus Brouwer, father of Femmetje Brouwer, Nicholas Gesner's mother, was a son of Jacob Brouwer and Anneke Bogardus. This incorrect descent continued at least through 1912, when it was published in The Gesners of Nova Scotia and New York.
A defense of the Brouwer ancestry of Nicholas Gesner as a response to the publication of "Anneke Jans Bogardus and Her Descendants," by J.R. Totten, was submitted by Anthon T. Gesner, author of The Gesners of Nova Scotia and New York, and can be found in the New York Genealogical and Biographical Record 57 (1926): 81-84.
  • Nicholas Gesner left a diary (1829-1850) which is available at the Palisades Library. An account of the diary (not the actual diary itself) was written by Alice Munro Haagensen and published in South of the Mountains, vol. 34, no. 2, 1990.6

Lane's affidavit, "which Mr. Jacob Brower put in my hands"; C-44, letter dated January 31, 1856, Nicholas Gesner, Rockland (as above mentioned) to Robert Pitcairn, mentions his poor health, Mr. B. Mandeville and Mr. Grossbeck; C-45, letter dated June 7, 1856, Nicholas Gesner of Rockland to Robert Pitcairn, mentions his poor health and his age of "one week 90 years and 6 months," and talks about the "fraud, devices and procrastinating tricks practiced by the Corporation of Trinity Church from the year 1830 to the present." He mentions "Jacob Baker, a grandson of Lena Brower, the daughter of Adolphus Brower, that said Jacob has understood from Dr. Kierstead that there was a deficiency in my pedigree and refused to accept of them as heirs." C-46, letter dated February 28, 1857, Nicholas Gesner to Robert Pitcairn, "I am now 91 years of age and nearly three months in my 92nd year. My family are middling well. We have had a severe cold winter." He states that his pedigree is positively known based on records and affidavits of several very old men. Mentions his brother John and his affidavit recorded in the County Clerk's Office in Rockland County. Asks about the whereabouts of Jacob Baker. C-47, letter from Robert Pitcairn to Nicholas Gesner, no date, but apparently in response to C-46. He has not been successful in locating Jacob Baker.
