He first appears in Chester, Morris Co., New Jersey on 6 Jun 1830, when the census was taken there (unfortunately the 1810 and 1820 census records for New Jersey have been lost or destroyed and so can not be consulted). At this time he was married, and not long after, he and his family moved to Fayette, Seneca Co., New York, where his eight month old son, Edward, was buried in December of 1830.
