Symon Symonsen Groot1
b. before 1625
- Symon Symonsen Groot was born before 1625.
- He married Rebecca du Trieux, daughter of Philippe du Trieux and Susanna du Chesne, before 1660.2,1
- Also known as Simon de Groot.3,4
- Symon Symonsen Groot came to New Netherlands while in the service of the West India Company, as a boatswain aboard the Prince Maurice. In 1645 he bought a house and lot in New Amsterdam from Jacob Roy. He was in Beverwjick (Albany) by 1654 when he offered his house there for sale. In 1662 he again offered his house for sale, apparently with the intent on moving to Esopus (Kingston). In 1667, however, he was still in Albany. On 8 Feb 1690, during the French and Indian raid on Schenectady, five of his sons, Symon, Abraham, Philip, Dirk, and Class were taken captive and led to Canada. All five were returned the following year.1
- Simon de Groot; April 10, 1647, Jan Michielsz is credited with f28, paid to Simon de Groot for work done at the farm called de Vlackte (in Rensselaerwijck). He is probably the same person as Symon Symonsz Groot, who went to the Esopus in 1662.3
- The "Groot Family of Albany and Schenectady," is covered by Jonathan Pearson in the New York Genealigical and Biographical Record, vol. 4, no. 1, beginning at page 8. Source citations are not provided. Pearson lists as his children, with wife Rebecca Du Trieux: Symon, Abraham, Philip, Dirck, Cornelis, Claas, Susanna who married Isaac Cornelise Swits, Maria who married Daniel Janse Van Antwerpen, Rebecca who married Claas Cornelise Vander Volgen, and Sara who married Arent Vedder. He does not include a daughter Elizabeth. Settlers of the Beekman Patent, vol. 3, page 64, makes the claim that Jan Buys married Elizabeth de Groot, daughter of Simon de Groot. This couples' second daughter was named Rebecca, and they named a son Simon.
