Evert Hendricksen1,2,3

d. before 20 February 1692
  • Also known as Everd Hendriksz.4
  • Also known as Evert Hendrickszen.5
  • Also known as Ephraim Hendricks.6
  • He probably came to New Netherland in 1654 (in the country for 33 years in 1687), but from where is not known.
  • In September 1676 at Brooklyn, Kings Co., Long Island, New York, a ____ Hendrickse appears on the tax roll at with 1 poll.7,8
  • He appeared on the assessment list of at Brooklyn, Kings Co., New York, on 26 September 1683 as Evert Hendrickse, rated at £24.10, with 1 poll, 1 cow, 1 do yearling.9
  • The September 1687 Oath of Allegiance, for inhabitants of Kings County, does not include the name of Evert Hendricksen. However, an "Ephraim Hendricks" (in the country for 33 years) is recorded between the names of Matthys Cornelisen and Claes Thomas Van Dyck. Matthys Cornelisen would become the second husband of Evert's widow. "Ephraim" is not a name found among Dutch families, and may be an error for Evert.6
  • The Bergen Co., New Jersey Van Gelder family descends from Evert Hendricksen, who is of undetermined origin. He was a resident of Brooklyn in the last quater of the seventeenth century. In records found, Evert never used the name Van Gelder as a surname, although since his time his descendants have used it. It may have been a family name back in the Netherlands, or it may have been adopted because they came from Gelderland. His son Jacob was the first known to use Van Gelder as a surname.10

This list, begun at 23:93, is continued at 24:19 with the explanation that the list is "actually a group pf signatures (many of them not holograph, however) to the declaration below, which it does indeed follow in the original record book." Those signing the declaration were 1-Acknowledging Dom. G. Haeghoort as their legal regular pastor and teacher, according to the constitution of the Low Dutch Reformed Church. 2- That they will display and conduct themselves willingly in all respects as members of the Reformed Low Dutch congregation at Friholt and Middletown under the supervision of their pastor Do. Haeghoort. 3- That they will contribute freely from time to time according to their means, whatever is needed to carry on the church and services. In effect, those signing the declaration could be described as Members of the Low Dutch Reformed Congregations of Freehold and Middletown. The first couple of dozen or so names appear at 23:93, 94, as "Church Members," and then are repeated at 24:20 with the above clarification..
