Johan Jost Herkimer1

b. say 1700, d. August 1775
  • Johan Jost Herkimer was born say 1700 at Germany.
  • He married Catherine Petrie.1
  • Johan Jost Herkimer died in August 1775.1
  • He came to America in 1721 and settled at German Flatts (then in Albany County), New York.1
  • He witnessed the baptism of Johan Peter Bellinger , son of Col. Peter Bellinger and Delia Herkimer, on 29 May 1760 at Reformed Dutch Church of Stone Arabia, Town of Palatine, (now Montgomery Co.), New York, (sponsors Peter Bellinger wittiber Maria, Johann Jost Hercheim Ehle Haussfrau).2

  • Johann Jost Herkimer is a possible son of Jurgh Herkimer, and at least one published genealogy states that he is. Others have apparently suggested that Jurgh and Johann Jost could be brothers. Of the two only Johann Jost Herkimer had descendants. Johann Jost, Jurgh, and their wives Catharina and Madalene are all on the list of patentees for the land that would become German Flatts. There is no further record of Jurgh. Either Jurgh and his wife returned to Germany (probably not likely) in which case Jurgh and Johann Jost may be brothers, or, Jurgh was Johann Jost's father, therefore an older man who simply passed away at an early time in the history of German Flatts.

Johann Jost Herkimer

b. before 1757
  • Johann Jost Herkimer was probably born before 1757.
  • He married Catharina before 1777.
  • Possible son of Johann Jost Herkimer and Maria Van Alen, based largely on the fact that he does not fit into any of the other Herkimer families. Johann Jost's first child was born in 1777. Assuming that Johann Jost was at least 20 years old at his marriage this places his birth at 1757 or earlier which makes it unlikely that he is a son of Col. George Herkimer & Alita Schulyer. Henrich Herkimer has a son, Joseph, already accounted for, while John Herkimer never married and Gen. Nicholas Herkimer never had children. Johann Jost's supposed parents do not appear as sponsors at the baptisms of any of his children. An explanation may be that since his children were all born after the Revolution, Johann Jost's parents may have already left for Canada (his father was a Loyalist).
