  • George Holmes was born before 1614.
  • He married first before 1635 Rebecca (probably no children).2
  • George Holmes married second at probably New Amsterdam before 1643 Jeen.3
  • George Holmes died before October 1658.3
  • Also known as Jorgien thomes.4
  • Also known as Joris Hom (sometimes spelled Hoom, Home, Homs, Homes, etc.).
  • George Holmes came to first to Virginia in the 1630s with his first wife Rebecca and a number of servants. His capture, while leading a failed English attempt to sieze the Dutch Fort Nassau on the South (Delaware) River, was his introduction to New Amsterdam. After being returned to Virginia, George and partner Thomas Hall headed back to New Amsterdam in late 1639 where they became the first English residents on the Island of Manhattan. He was the proprietor of the only tobacco farm at Deutel, or "Turtle Bay" on the East River in New Amsterdam, now New York City.5
  • On 4 Aug 1635, "Capt. John West, Governor, with consent of the Council, conveyed to George Holmes 150 acres of land in the County of James, at the head of a creeke witch 'pteth Archers hope and Jockes neck' bounded by John Johnson, called Jockeys Neck, 50 being due to Holmes for his own personal adventure into the colony, 50 acres more for his wife Rebecca Homes into this colony, and the other 50 acres being due unto him by and for the transportation at his own proper costs and charges of one servent, called Thomas Browne, into this colony." (Vol. 1, p.269, Patents Land Office, Richmond, Virginia).2
  • On 12 Sep 1636, George Holmes was granted 200 acres in the County of James City, "at a great swamp lying on the north side of Samuel Sneade, to woods joining westerly Mr. Harwood, for himself, wife Rebecca and two servents, Thomas Browne and Robert Sharpe."2
  • On 24 Aug 1637, Sir John Harvey, Governor, conveyed to George Holmes 350 acres in the County of James City, at the head of Goches Creeke "where he is now seated, being due for himself 50 acres, for his wife Rebecca 50 acres, and 250 acres for five servants viz., Thomas Browne, Robert Sharpe, James Nambly, Jeffrey ffrye, and Ann..."2
  • On 19 May 1639, at New Amsterdam.Jan Brouwer, plaintiff, vs. George Holmes, defendant. For payment of fl. 60. Plaintiff demands payment of what is due him. G[e]orge Homs admits the debt and promises to pay within five or six weeks when Mr. Allerton shall have returned to the Manhates from the North..6
  • George Holmes and Thomas Hall declared their intention to create a plantation and build a house at Turtle Bay (on Manhattan Island) as early as 7 Sep 1639. Turtle Bay was the earliest settlement on the East River between Bouwery #1 and Montagnes Point. George Holmes (or Homs, as his name reads on the grant) and Thomas Hall (Hal) were tobacco planters in partnership. The two were the first Englishmen to settle on Manhattan Island. In Sep. 1635, Gov. West of Virginia had sent George Holmes, with a small force of men, one of whom was Thomas Hall, to take possession of Fort Nassau on the South River. They were captured by the Dutch and soon returned to Virginia. Holmes and Hall, however, returned to New Amsterdam where they worked for Dir.-Gov. Van Twiller on his plantation at Sapokanikan in July 1638, and were living in his home when Van Twiller returned to Holland in Mar 1639, to be replaced by Dir-Gov. Kieft. George Holmes and Thomas Hall took the oath of allegiance in Aug 1639, and it was Dir-Gov Kieft who granted the two their patent. Thomas Hall sold his interest to George Holmes in 1640/41. A saw-mill was built on the farm by Pieter Cornelissen for George Holmes. George had mortgaged his property and the mortgage was assigned to William Pietersen, as part of his father's estate, and was evidently paid by the administrators of George Holmes estate.7
  • On 24 Nov 1639, Nicholas Stillwell sued his neighbors, George Holmes and Thomas Hall, for an "anker" of brandy, which they had appropriated for their own use.8
  • On 15 November 1639 Thomas Hall and George Homs had a Dutch grant for land at Deutel Bay, on Manhattan Island (modern Turtle Bay, near the foot of 30th street, East River).9
  • On 10 Feb 1643, George Holmes (among others) signed a certificate to Edward Douglas at Northampton,Virginia. This was apparently a record of the adventure of Edward Douglas, his family and servants.2
  • On 18 October 1646 George Homs and George Cleyr were bonded to Richard Lattyn, on account of Laurence Turner, for £13 Stg.10
  • He lived in 1647 at New Amsterdam on the corner of Winckel and Brugh Straets.11
  • On 16 Oct 1649 or 50 Richard Stillwell's father, Nicholas, bought him the farm in Gravesend belonging to George Holmes, and on 20 Oct 1650, sold it again to Richard Clough and Thomas Doxy as proxies.12
  • In 1653 A George and Jane Holmes are at Northumberland Co., Virginia, "by Christopher Boyce."13
  • He witnessed the baptism of Machtelt Bresser , daughter of Henry Bresser and Susannah Spicer, on 21 November 1655 at Reformed Dutch Church, New Amsterdam, (sponsors Joris Homs, Been Homs).14
  • After the death of his wife, the Turtle Bay farm seems to have been left deserted for a descade or so. In 1671, English Gov. Francis Lovelace granted the property, having been told that it, "Doth not properly belong to any particular person," to Capt. John Manning (the same Capt. Manning who would surrender New York back to the Dutch in 1673). A confirmation dated 4 Jul 1677 by Gov. Richard Nicholls to Priscilla Holmes, William Holmes and John Holmes, children of George Holmes, deceased, confirmed the original patent of Sep 1639. John Holmes then conveyed his interest in the property in the City of New York to Priscilla Holmes and William Holmes. The farm then apears to have been sold to Johannes Ryckman, son of Capt. Albert Jansz Ryckman of Albany.15
