Dirck Jansen Hoogland1

b. circa 1635
  • Dirck Jansen Hoogland was probably born circa 1635 at Utrecht, the Netherlands, (age 22 on 20 Aug 1667).2
  • He married Anneken Hanse, daughter of Hans Hansen and Sarah Jorise Rapalje, at Old First Dutch Reformed Church, Breuckelen (Brooklyn), Kings Co., Long Island, New York, on 8 October 1662.3
  • Dirck Jansen Hoogland married second between 1670 and 1676 Annetje Feddens.
  • Also known as Dirck Jansen Hoghlandt.4
  • Also known as Dirck Jansen Hogelant.5
  • Also known as Dirck Hooglant.6
  • Also known as Dirk Jansz Hoogland.7
  • Also known as Dirck Janszen.
  • Dirck Jansen Hoogland came to New Netherland circa 1657 (30 years in this country in Sep 1687).8
  • He came "from Maerseveen, in the province of Utrecht, being at the time twenty-two years of age."2
  • He "bought a certificate from Flatbush of the due publication of the banns in the church there for three successive Sabaths, according to custom, it follows that he was then living at that place. His reason for going to Flatbush we may not know, unless it be in the fact that some who came out from Holland the year he did had settled in that vicinity in Flatlands and Gravesend. Among these were Jan Brouwer, Dirck Longstreet, Pieter Tull and Willem Willemszen Van Engen, ancestor of a branch of the Wyckoffs." [This statement made by Daniel Hoagland Carpenter in 1891, may not be entirely correct. There were a number of men with the patronymic, Dirck Jansen, living in Kings County at the turn of the 17th to the 18th century, and Dirck Jansen Hoogland was only one of them. The Dirck Jansen who lived at Flatlands and Gravesend, is more probably Dirck Jansen Brouwer].9
  • On 9 September 1682 at Reformed Protestant Dutch Church, Flatbush, Kings Co., Long Island, New York, Deacons' account: Derck Jansen Hogelant's debit for the use of the shroud, f4.5
  • He witnessed the baptism of Hendrick van Weyen , son of Hendrick Hendricksz van Weyen and Annetje Dirckse Hoogland, on 7 December 1684 at Old Dutch Church, Kingston, Ulster Co., New York, (sponsors Dirck Hoogeland, Sara).10
  • Dirck Jansen Hoogland took the Oath of Allegiance in September 1687 at Flatbush, Kings Co., Long Island, New York, "Dirck Jan hooglant, 30 Jeare." Followed on the list by Jan Dircks Hooglant (native) and Willem Dircks Hooglant (native).8
  • He witnessed the baptism of Teunis Teerpening , son of Gerrit Lambertsen and Annetje Dirckse Hoogland, on 7 February 1697 at Old Dutch Church, Kingston, Ulster Co., New York, (sponsor Dirrick Hoogland).11
  • Dirck Jansen Hoogland appeared on the census in 1698 at Flatbush (als Midwout), Kings Co., Long Island, New York, as Dirck Hooglant, with a houseold of 1 man, 1 woman, 6 children. He is recorded between Jan Van Ditmarsen and Pieter Lott.6
  • On 9 August 1701 He sold to Jacobus Van Cortlandt, then Alderman and later Mayor of New York, certain landin Flatbush, which he had bought of Belthazar De Hart, "bounded on the east and west by Cornelis de Seeuw."12
  • On 18 April 1706 Dirck Hoogland petitoned for payment for two horses, lost in Colonel Dongan's expedition to Albany in 1688, "in which expedition his cousin, Johannes Hoogland, of New York, served as a trooper."13
  • In 1891, Daniel Hoogland Carpenter published History and Genealogy of The Hoagland Family in America, from their First Settlement at New Amsterdam, 1638 to 1891. Dirck Jansen Hoogland and his descendants are covered in "Book IV" beginning at page 159. The text includes many records and instances referring to Dirck Jansen, and sources are cited at the bottom of each page.
  • Based upon the known and estimated dates of birth of his children, it appears that the first three children of Dirck Jansen (Annetje, Jan and William) were children of his first wife, Anneken Hanse, while the younger four children (Cornelis, Hendrick, Sara and Lijsbeth) were children of his second wife, Annetje Feddens. There appears to be about a seven or eight year gap between the births of William and Cornelis, assuming that the estimations of their birth years are correct.

  • He married Jakoba before 1696.3
  • Also known as Jan Dircksen.4

  • Jan Dirckszen Hoogland took the Oath of Allegiance in September 1687 at Flatbush, Kings Co., Long Island, New York, "Jan Dircks hooglant, native."7
  • He moved to Raritan, New Jersey, and in a deed dated 8 May 1721, "John Hoogland, yeoman, of Raritan, Middlesex County, New Jersey" selld to William Hoogland, of Flatbush, yeoman, a certain plantation scituate in Flatbush, where said John Hoogland's father now lives...2
  • By 1741 he had settled at Amwell, Hunterdon County, New Jersey. "Here probably Jan Dircksen died, but his wife, Jacoba, was living in 1765."8
  • Children shown (except for Annetie) are per the account of Daniel Hoagland Carpenter (1891). Only Tytje (Sijtje) and Nelke have records of baptisms that have been found. It is noted that there is a 13 year gap between the stated birth of Cornelis and the baptism of Nelke, therefore they may be additional children. D. H. Carpenter also suggests a possible son, Jacobus Hogelant, whose wife was Marey and had a daughter, Martha, baptized at New Brunswick, August 28, 1737. Daniel Hoagland Carpenter did not include the daughter Annetie whose baptism in found in the Flatbush Town records.8,5
