Tryntje Jonas1,2

b. before 1590, d. between 21 September 1644 and 1647
  • Tryntje Jonas was born before 1590.
  • She married Jan before 1605.3
  • Tryntje Jonas died between 21 September 1644 and 1647 at New Amsterdam.3
  • She witnessed the baptism of Cornelis Bogardus , son of Domine Everardus Bogardus and Anneke Jans, on 9 September 1640 at Reformed Dutch Church, New Amsterdam, (sponsors Corn. Vander Oykens fiscael, Mr. Ludolf, Thyme Jans, Catharina Trasele, Tryntje Jonas).4
  • Tryntje Jonas witnessed the baptism of Jonas Bogardus , son of Domine Everardus Bogardus and Anneke Jans, on 4 January 1643 at Reformed Dutch Church, New Amsterdam, (sponsors olof Strephenszen Van Courtlt, Mr. Gysbert opten dyck, Tryntje Jonas, Sara Roelofs).5
  • Tryntje Jonas witnessed the baptism of Andries Claeszen , son of Claes Andrieszen, on 22 February 1644 at Reformed Dutch Church, New Amsterdam, (sponsors Jacob Wilt, Laurens Andrieszen, Van Noordwagen, Lambert Valkenburgh, Isaac Abrahamszen, Van Euchuysen, Tryntje Ionas, Heltije Jacobs Van Naerden).6
  • Also called Tryntje Jans, and with the equivalent given name of Catrina. She was a midwife in the employ of the West India Co. The exact date of her arrival in New Netherlands is not known, but her name appears several times in the baptismal records of the Dutch Church of New Amsterdam, first as a sponsor on 9 Sep 1640, at the baptism of her grandson Cornelis Bogardus, the second son of Domine Everardus Bogardus, by her daughter Anneke Jans; then again on 4 Jul 1643, as a sponsor at the baptism of Jonas Bogardus, a grandson in the same way; and finally on 21 Sep 1644, as sponsor for Jans (or Hans) Kierstede, her great grandson, a grandchild of her daughter Anneke and her first husband Roelof Jansen. Her name also appears in the "Calender of New York Historical Manuscripts, Dutch, 1630-1644," on 7 Jul 1644 when Tryntje Jonas, midwife, makes a declaration respecting a confession made to her by Hillegond Joris as to the paternity of the child of Hillegond Joris. In 1647 (no specific date given, although following an entry dated 11 Aug 1647), Dirck Cornelissen, husband of Maritje Jans, daughter of Tryn Jonas, midwife, deceased, grants a power of attorny to Rev. Everardus Bogardus to receive money due said midwife by the West India Co. So, it appears that Tryntje was in New Amsterdam as early as Sep 1640, and was dead by Aug 1647, probably a few years sooner. It appears that she arrived in New Netherlands as a widow, perhaps accompanied by her daughter Marritje Jans, who on 28 May 1646, married in the Dutch Church, New Amsterdam Dirck Cornelissen. In Feb 1644, Tryntje was granted a patent for a lot south of Fort Amsterdam on Manhattan Island, and on 15 Sep 1644, the Rev. Everardus Bogardus appears for her in a suit against Jacob Roy, she is then in all probability deceased by 15 Sep 1644. Tryntje probably arrived in New Netherlands after her daughter Annetje Jans, at the time the wife of Roelof Jansen. They had come to New Amsterdam in 1630. In addition to her two known daughters, some have said that Tryntje also had a son Wolfert Webber (which also presumes Wolfert Webber Sr. to be her husband). This assertion, however, has been disproved.

Barney Jones1

b. circa 1812
  • Father*: Daniel Jones2
  • Mother*: Elizabeth2
  • Barney Jones was born circa 1812 at New York.3
  • He married Sarah Hatfield, daughter of James Hatfield and Sarah Vanderbilt, at Moravian Church, New Dorp, Richmond Co. (Staten Island), New York, on 16 December 1835.2
  • Barney Jones married second circa 1844 Sarah.
  • Also known as Barnett Jones.4
  • Barney Jones appeared on the census in 1840 at Northfield, Richmond Co. (Staten Island), New York, as Bernard Jones, with a household of 1 male under 5, 1 male 20-30, 2 females under 5, 1 female 20-30.5
  • He appeared on the census on 17 April 1850 at Northfield, Richmond Co. (Staten Island), New York, Barn A. Jones, age 38, born in New York. Boatman. Real estate valued at $1000. In the household are Sarah Jones (age 20), Elizabeth Jones (13), Angeline Jones (11), Oliver Jones (5), Edward Jones (3), Mary Jones (2).3
  • He appeared on the census on 14 July 1860 at Northfield, Richmond Co. (Staten Island), New York, Barney Jones, age 49, born in New York. Oysterman. Real estate valued at $5000, personal estate at $15,000. In the household are Sarah Jones (37), Oliver H. Jones (15), Edward Jones (12), Mary Jones (10), Daniel Jones (8), Alice Jones (5), Barney Jones (3), Sarah Jones (5/12), William H. Driscoll (age 12, b. Virginia), Mary A. Cobb (age 23, b. Ireland, cook).6
  • He appeared on the census on 5 July 1870 at Northfield, Richmond Co. (Staten Island), New York, Barnet Jones, age 59, born in New York. Oyster dealer. In the household are Sarah Jones (age 47), Mary Jones (20), Daniel Jones (17), Alice Jones (15), Barnett Jones (12), Sarah Jones (10), Marilla Jones (6). Also Bridget McDonald (age 36, b. Ireland, domestic servant).7
  • He appeared on the census on 3 June 1880 at Port Richmond, Richmond Co. (Staten Island), New York, Barnett Jones, age 68, born in New York. Both parents born in New York. Oyster dealer. In the household are his wife Sarah, daughter Sarah and daughter Urilla.4
  • Whether or not Barnett/Barney Jones was married twice has not been determined. If married twice, then both wives were named Sarah. It is known from his marriage record that he married Sarah Hatfield in 1835. Census records starting in 1850 do name his wife as Sarah, however, the ages reported on the later census records indicate that this Sarah was born in the 1820s and therefore too young to have been married in 1835. In addition there is a six year gap between Barney's second child, Angeline, and his third, Oliver. This opens the possibility that his first wife died and Barney remarried during this six year interval.
