From Sept. 20, 1646, to April 20, 1648, he was employed on de Vlackte, at wages of f120 a year. Jan 14, 1649, Jochem Kettelheym and Jurian Bestval took over from Evert Pels the lease of the farm formerlly occupied by Symon Walichsz, until the expiration of said lease on May 1, 1653, at an annual rent of f560, but Oct. 8, 1651, Kettelheym was released from his obligations and BEstval became solely responsible. According to O'Callaghan, History of New Netherland, I:451, Jochem Ketteheym came from Cremyn (Kremmin, near Stettin, Pomerania).1

  • He was a silversmith. In 1932 some of his work was exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and at the Museum of the City of New York. His work, apparently, caused a great deal of interest among antiquarians for its distinct individuality. He moved to New Haven, Connecticut, where he leases with "James and Peter fferiss of the town of West Chester, N.Y."; "all Copper and other Mines (except Iron Mines) in the Blew Hills in New Haven and adjacent Hills Between the Mill and East Rivers, and also Divers other privaleges and profits for 50 years," on 16 Feb 1721/1722. In Jan 1753, "On memorial of Caleb Hotchkiss and others Selectmen of ye town of New Haven, yt Cornelius Kierstead of said town by reason of his advanced age and infirmities is become impotent & unable to take care of himself & his estate. This court, at ye desire of ye Selectmen, according to ye Laws of this Colony in such Case provided, appoint James Peck Jr. Conservator of ye Person & Estate of ye sd Cornelius." Capt. James Peck presented to the court an inventory of the estate in April 1753, amounting to over 357pounds, but Cornelis Kierstede was not spoken of as deceased at that time. The date of his death has not been found.4

  • A surgeon. From Maegdenburg, Prussian Saxony, perhaps a refugee of that place after it was sacked by Tilly in 1630. He came to New Netherlands in 1638, with Director General Kieft in the service of the West India Co. He was the first physician and surgeon in New Amsterdam. His brother Jochem Kierstede perished in the wreck of "The Princess" off the coast of Wales, along with Kieft and Dom. Bogardus. He appears in the early Dutch records on 1 May 1638; on 28 Aug1648 he is spoken of as "late in the service of the W.I. Co." He was alive when his last child was baptized on 13 Sep 1665 and on 17 Jul 1667 he is spoken of on a deed as "being then dead."
