Henry Kinne1
b. circa 1624, d. before 6 June 1712
- Henry Kinne was born circa 1624 (age 60 in 1684).2
- He married Anne before 1651.3,2
- Henry Kinne and Magdalene Hilton, daughter of William Hilton and Frances, married by intention on 14 May 1698 (recorded at Salem, Massachusetts).4,5
- Henry Kinne died before 6 June 1712; "A quit-claim deed from his youngest son, Henry to his oldest son, John, dated 6 Jun 1712, refers to him as deceased."1
- Also known as Henry Kenning.5
- Also known as Henry Keny.6
- Also known as Henry Keney.7
- Also known as Henry Kene.8
- On 26 June 1639 Vincent Potter assigned Henry Kenninge an apprentice for eight years to William Parke. In preperation for a return to England Vincent Potter (Sandwich, Mass.) transferred several of his servants to other New England men.9,10
- Henry Kenny served during King Philip's War and is credited with service under Capt. Prentice (29 Feb 1675/76), Capt. John Whipple of Ipswich (24 Jul 1676), from Salem under Capt. George Curwin (24 Aug 1676).11
- On 15 May 1680 at Salem, Samuel Wakefield sued Henry Kenny Sr. to recover a debt due for tailor's work.12
- In 1947, The Genealogy of Henry and Ann Kinne, Pioneers of Salem, Massachusetts, was published by Florence Keeney Robertson. Unfortunately her account of Henry Kinne contains errors, few of which have been corrected in any publlished format. The claim that he was a son of "John Keney and Sarah Cheever and grandson of Sir Thomas Kinne Baronet of King's Lynn, Co. Norfolk," has not been proved. The statement that he came to New England in May 1635 aboard the ship Elizabeth and Ann is possible but has not been verified. The first account of Henry in New England is on 26 Jun 1639, when Vincent Potter transfered his servants to others in Essex Co., Massachusetts. Vincent Potter did come to New England in 1635 aboard the Elizabeth and Ann (age 21), however, no Henry Kinne is listed with him [Hotten 76]. In 1639 he was apprenticed for eight years to William Parke. In all likelihood Henry Kinne came to New England as an indentured servant, and not as a presumed relative of Vincent Potter as stated by Robertson.
His death has been stated as 19 Jun 1696 (Robertson claims to cite Newbury VR), but no record of his death has been found. On 14 May 1698, recorded at Salem, is the marriage intention of Henry Kenning and Magdaleane Wiggins. This is most probably a second marriage of Henry Kinne (Robertson assigns this marriage to Henry's son of the same name, however, he was married to Priscilla Lewis at this time and had children born by her from 1693 through 1710). Claims that Henry's first wife, Anne, was either Ann Howard or Anne Putnam are not supported by known records. Anne's identify remains undiscovered. Incredibly, the same mis-information initiated by Robertson in 1947, was re-published as recently as 2003 in Settlers of the Beekman Patent, vol. 7, p. 541 by Frank J. Doherty who cites a Rootsweb posting by Mark Ellis on the Kinne Message Board from 2001.
