On 17 Feb 1646 he bought a house and lot, northeast of Fort Amsterdam, from Roelof Jansen Haes (this was on Broadway, above Whitehall St., between Marketfield St. and Beaver St.). On 30 May 1658, Hendrick Kip bought plots from Christian Barents located on the east side of Broadway and on both sides of Wall St. The purchase was for 600 gilders in cash, and a mortgage of another 500 gilders. In 1647, 1649, and 1650 Hendrick Kip served on the Board of Nine Men, as "advisors" or assistants of a sort, to Dir. Gen. Peter Stuyvesant. He wa appointed a Schepen on 2 Feb 1656. On 11 Apr 1657 he was admitted with rights of a great burgher. After the Dutch surrender to the English, Hendrick Kip took the oath of allegiance to the English Crown in Oct 1664. The last mention of him in the records was on 19 Apr 1665 when he was assessed, to pay the board and lodging for soldiers stationed at the city garrison.⁶

He was admitted to the rights of a Great Burgher in New Amsterdam on 17 Apr 1657, and at about that time moved to New Amstel (now New Castle, Delaware) on the Delaware River where he became one of the Council. New Amstel, at the time, was in the Colony of New Sweden, which had been captured by the Dutch in 1655. His occupation at New Amstel, was that of a brewer. He was Schepen in 1659, a member of the Council on 9 Sep 1659, and appointed one of the Commissioners on 29 Jun 1660. He apparently left New Amstel after the English took possession in 1664. While living at New Amstel, on 17 Sep 1662, Hendrick Kip bought a houselot east of Broadway in New Amsterdam, and north of Exchange Place from Augustine Heermans. This property was sold by Hendrick's son, Hendrick Kip, through attorney, Jacob Kip on 20 Oct 1672. By 3 Apr 1665, Hendrick Kip was living at Midwout (or Flatbush), Long Island, when he was chosen Overseer of the town. He also held the office in 1666, and until Apr. 1667. In the Flatbush town records he is often called Captain. He was Churchmaster, 1667-1670; appointed Inspector, 25 Feb 1670; and is last mentioned in the records on 2 Dec 1670 when as Churchmaster he was named as the plaintiff in a suit.⁶

In the deed he sells the property purchased by his father in New York, east of Broadway. In May 1699, Hendrick Kip of Flatbush purchased 60 acres in "Bedford new lotts" fronting on the highway. On 20 May 1711 he bought "A Dwelling house and Garden Spott" in Flatbush from Anna de Browne and Nacasius Kip (his mother and brother). Hendrick Kip was Collector in Flatbush in 1711, 1712, 1714, 1716-20, and Constable in 1713 and 1714. On 17 Sep 1720, Hendrick Kip of Flatbush sold to Jacobus Beekman of same place a "Dwelling House and Lott of Ground adjoining thereunto situate in fflatbush bounded at ye ffront by the Highway...containing Two acres be it more or less." Also a wood lot in Flatbush. After selling this property Hendrick probably moved to Monmouth Co., New Jersey where the will of "Hendricus Kyp" is found.²

He was the Captain of a Yacht and was engaged in the river trade between New Amsterdam and Esopus (Kingston, Ulster Co., New York), and Fort Orange (Albany, New York).⁶

On 15 Mar 1655, he was a signer of a petition asking for the street to be paved with stone. It was the first street to be paved on Manhattan Island. Pltf. says that the deft. kills the hens. Deft. admits having fired with powder only. Burgomasters undertake to inspect the fence and inquire into the matter.
  Hendrick Janzen, smith, pltf. vs. Isaac Kip. Pltf. demands from deft. six guilders thirteen stivers according to bill. Deft. says he does not owe more than four guilders according to statement. Burgomasters and Schepens having looked into the account find that deft. owes pltf. five guilders fifteen stivers and order him to satisfy and pay that to the pltf.
  On 17 Apr 1663: Burgomasters report that they have inspected the fence between the house and lot of Hendrick Jansen, smith, and Isaack Kip, and find that the same is not as it ought to be. The court orders the two parties to make together the fence in question suitable and good, to remove their firewood from the same, and to cut the wings of their fowls, so that neither the one nor the other suffer any loss thereby..⁹

• James Kip was a brass founder, and he lived at No. 59 Broadway in New York City, in 1789, and for sometime thereafter, his house beinf near the foundry. The Revolution ruined his business, and he never regained it, nor the style of living to which he had been accustomed. In 1816 he transferred ownership of 150 acres near Johnstown (Montgomery Co.) New York to his son John L. Kip for $3850.
  He was one of those who help in the preperation of the "Old Rigging Loft" where the Methodists held their first meetings in New York City. He became a Methodist and his branch of the family continued as Methodists.⁶
