b. 9 March 1755, d. 10 November 1836
  • Sara Kip was baptized on 9 March 1755 at Reformed Dutch Church, New York City, New York, sponsors Jeremias Brouwer, Jannetje Elswort, z.h.v.1
  • She married first at Reformed Dutch Church, New York City, New York, on 8 December 1774 Joseph Crane, son of Ezekiel Crane and Elizabeth Holliway.3
  • Sara Kip married second at Reformed Dutch Church, New York City, New York, on 21 April 1792 Capt. William Scudder.3
  • Sara Kip died on 10 November 1836; probably in Greenbrier Co., Virginia (now West Virginia).4
  • Sarah is named in her husband, Capt. William Scudder's will dated 1 Oct 1798.5
  • "Sarah Scudder, Mother and guardian to Abraham Kip Scudder, Son to William Scudder, deceas'd..." and "...Mother and guardian to said Sarah, daughter of said deceas'd," appears in a document dated 4 Aug 1810 regarding the division of a piece of property which apparently belonged to William Scudder. It is curious that William and Sarah's son, William, is not mentioned in this document.6
  • She was a member of the at Reformed Dutch Church, New York City, New York, on 9 December 1812 called "Sara Kip, widow of William Scudder."7
  • The interesting life of Sarah Kip is described by Diane Crane Benelli in her article, "Sarah (Kip) Crane-Scudder and Her Revolutionary-War-Officer Husbands," New York Genealogical and Biographical Record vol. 138 (Oct. 2007) pages 284-293. Although not mentioned in the articles's Genealogical Summary, the death record of Kipp Scudder, son of William Scudder, coincidentley appears in the same issue on page 309 in "Deaths Recorded by the First Presbyterian Church, New York City."
  • A follow up in NYGBR 139 (2008):311 "Additions and Corrections" adds two more children to the family of Sarah Kip and Capt. William Scudder that were not mentioned in the original article (NYGBR 138:284-293. This addition, made by the editor and not by the original article's author, may not be accurate. Based upon the short time they were married, it is not likely that Sarah and William had four children. It is more likely that they had only three children, daughter Sarah, son Kipp (possibly born William Kip Scudder, named for his father) who died young, and Abraham Kip Scudder, who may well have taken the name William Kip Scudder (in honor of his deceased father) as an adult.
