  • Samuel Lewis died in December 1739; "somewhere between the present towns of Mendam and Chester, New Jersey."4
  • Samuel Lewis came from Massachusetts to Woodbridge, New Jersey sometime in the 1690s (bef 1698). He had nine children, with the births of the first three recorded at Woodbridge. There is no surviving birth records for the remaining six children. Around 1732-34, Samuel moved his family up the Raritan River to northern New Jersey, and his children, with the exception of Samuel, a mariner, settled in the communities of Succasuanna, Mt. Freedom, Mendham, Peapack, Bernardsville, and Basking Ridge. Samuel and his wife appear to have lived with their son, Eliphalet.2

He is mentioned at Bristol, Rhode Island as early as 1681. He was taxed at Mendon, Massachusetts in 1691, 1692 and 1693. He is called "of Mendon" in 1696 with wife, Hannah. In 1692, Thomas Lewis of Bristol, R.I. sold land to Capt. John Andrews.4
