Joseph Magnan dit Champagne1
b. circa 1810, d. 29 January 1860
- Joseph Magnan dit Champagne was born circa 1810 at Canada.2
- He married Louisa before 1832.3
- Joseph Magnan dit Champagne died on 29 January 1860 at Bridport, Addison Co., Vermont.4
- Descendants are found with the name Manning; this appearing to have begun with the grandchildren's generation. Joseph's original surname may not have been Manning.5
- Also known as Joseph Champaign (1850 U.S. census).6
- Also known as Joseph Champlain.7
- He lived at Peru, Clinton Co., New York, for 18 years.4
- He appeared on the census on 29 August 1850 at Peru, Clinton Co., New York, as Joseph Champaign, age 41, born in Canada. A laborer. In the household are his wife Louisa, and children, Gilbert, Jane, Peter, Caroline, Josephine, Franklin, and Albert.6
- A grandson (George J. Manning) has stated that Joseph's father was named Joseph, and that his grandfather was named Joseph as well. William H. Manning, compiler of the Manning Famalies of New England (1902) corresponded with George J. Manning (then of Stockbridge, Vermont) and filed the correspondence with that of others he believed decended from the Manning families of Dutchess County. This Joseph Manning used a "dit" name (Champaign) and so have had French Canadian origins, and is not related to the Dutchess County Manning families at all.

We have no idea why Joseph Manning and his son-my gr. gr. grandfather-Gilbert used another surname. The nearest any of us can figure is they were copying the French who tended to use other names which were called "dit" names. If this was the case, then they were using a name from some neighboring family or if it were Champlain, then either after the lake or the town in which some had originally lived. Interesting though that they eventually used the real family name of Manning.". Hereinafter cited as "F. Manning e-mail 12-29-2006."
Magny
- The first Many settlers in New England and New York were three brothers, Jacque, Jean, and Jeremie. They were Huguenots originally from the village of Meschers, a seaport on the Atlantic coast, in the (present day) Charente-Maritime department in France. Late in the 1600s, after religious persucution and intolerance towards those of the Protestant faith increased in France, many Huguenot families found there to be no choice but to leave their homes. Many Huguenots fled to England, Ireland and Holland, others to Germany and Switzerland. For many of the refugees these places were only temporary stops, before choosing to start out on a new life on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean. The first setllement for the Manys was in Narragansett (Rhode Island) where, at least Jacque and Jeremie are recorded at the Huguenot Colony there in 1687. Jacque's name is found frequently in the French Church records there, and the "Capt. Many" referred to may possibly be Jean, whose name otherwise does not appear in the records. Due to toubles with the local Native Americans, and land disputes with the English, the Huguenot settlement at Narraganset was soon abandoned, and families were once again on the move, this time to various locations as close as Boston, New York City, and New Rochelle, New York, or as far as South Carolina. The three Many brothers all appeared in New York City, and it is known that there was a Many, or Magny, family at the New Rochelle Huguenot settlement. The name "Magny" is on the list of Huguenot settlers on the monument in Hudson Park. The most common spelling variation of the name, in the early years, seems to be Many, but later the names appears in various locations and in different lines of descent as Many, Maney, Manney, Manne, Manna, and probably others.1,2
