Joshua Manning1,2,3

b. 15 November 1744, d. 17 March 1824
  • Joshua Manning was born on 15 November 1744 (based upon his age at death).4
  • Another source says Joshua Manning was born on 15 September 1751 (Family Bible entry).5,6,2
  • He married first circa 1771 Mary Mott, daughter of Joseph Mott and Phebe Smith.7
  • Joshua Manning married second after March 1774 Betty Darby.7,8
  • Joshua Manning married third on 20 January 1793 Rebecca Wiltse, daughter of Wilhelmus Wiltse and Maria Pinkney, in either Alburgh, Vermont or Hemmingford, Canada East.9,10
  • Joshua Manning died on 17 March 1824 at Alburgh, Grand Isle Co., Vermont; age 79y 6m 13d.4,11
  • He was buried at Bush Cemetery, Alburgh, Grand Isle Co., Vermont.
  • Joshua Manning appears on the tax list at Nine Partners/Crum Elbow Precinct 1777 through 1779.12
  • On 18 July 1777, Charles Manning, Joshua Manning, and Jacob Manning were fined (£5, £3, and £1 respectively) for being delinquent in reporting for duty in the Company of Capt. Joseph Hagaman. The three, along with John Odell, Jacob Mott, Richard Mott, Albertus Schryver, and others were held as prisoners "before the Board" at which point they took the Oath of Allegiance to New York State, and were discharged.13
  • Joshua Manning appears on the tax list in Clinton, Dutchess Co., New York in 1787.14
  • He appeared on the census in 1790 at Alburgh, Chittenden Co., Vermont, as Joshua "Maning" with a family of 1 male over 16, 4 males under 16, 2 females.15
  • Joshua Manning also appears on the 1790 census in Champlain, Clinton Co., New York with a family of 1 male over 16, 3 males under 16, 1 female. The reason for this is an anomaly in the taking of the 1790 U.S. Census. In short, at the time the census was taken in 1790, Vermont was not a state (it was in fact a Republic from 1777 until 1791) and in 1790 New York State claimed the lands on both sides of Lake Champlain (where the present town of Alburgh, Vermont now sits). After Vermont joined the Union in 1791, a federal census was taken for the "new" state. Thus in actuality, Vermont's 1790 census was not taken until 1791, and as the border dispute was settled, Alburgh was again counted, this time in Vermont.16
  • Gabriel and Joshua Manning were present at the town meeting in Alburgh, Vermont on 16 May 1792. Joshua was elected selectman, Gabriel was elected leather sealer.17
  • Joshua Manning appears frequently in the town records of Alburgh, Vermont from 1792 through at least 1809. His earmark was registered there 9 Jun 1792; on 4 Mar 1793 he was one of the "listers" sworn in along with Philip Cook, John Leduc, and Sandi Helmes; he appears on the list of rateable estates in 1793 (24-10-0), 1794 (30-10-0), 1797 (152.75), 1809 (166.25); he was elected one of the Selectman, along with Stephen Sweet, Ichabod Babcock, Rhubin Taylor, and John Ladue 20 Mar 1795. Gabriel Manning also appears frequently in the early Alburgh records, and a Jacob Manning appears a little later on.18,19
  • He appeared on the census in 1800 at Alburgh, Franklin Co., Vermont, 4 males under 10, 2 males 10-15, 1 male 16-25, 1 male over 45, 1 female under 10, 2 females 10-15, 1 female 16-25, 1 female 26-44.20
  • He appeared on the census in 1810 at Alburgh, Grand Isle Co., Vermont, with a Household of 2 males 10-15, 2 males 16-25, 2 males 45 and over, 1 female under 10, 2 females 10-15, 2 females over 45. Recorded on the same sheet are Henry, Thomas, and Joseph Manning.21
  • He appeared on the census in 1820 at Alburgh, Grand Isle Co., Vermont, with a family of 1 male under 10, 1 male 16-26, 1 male over 45, 2 females 16-26, 1 female over 45, 1 person engaged in agriculture. Following Joshua on the census sheet is Absolom Manning.22
  • Rebecca Wiltse has been claimed as the third wife of Joshua Manning. Although Rebecca Wiltse married a Joshua Manning on 20 Jan 1793, it is possible that this Joshua was a younger man, possibly a nephew of this Joshua, perhaps the son of Gabriel, who was born in 1774. Rebecca Wiltse and her husband, Joshua Manning were said to have lived at Hemmingford, Canada, while Joshua Manning (1744-1824) lived at Alburgh, Vermont.
  • Elizabeth Manning is said to be a son of Joshua Manning by one source which does not document the claim. However, no daughter named Elizabeth is mentioned in the Family Bible record, and her birth date (as given) would conflict with that of Joshua Manning's daughter, Eleanor.23

L.F.M. (the father) was born in 1814; m. in 1837 at Redford, N.Y., Mary Patch. She d. in 1858 at Andrew, Iowa, where L.F.M. died in Feb 1889. Of his father, Col. E.C.M. writes, "I have heard him say he was born on the ocean on a sailing vessel to Quebec, Canada, and that his mother was French, and I think he said that his father was French, but of the later statement I am not so clear. He never saw his father after he was old enough to remember events, for his father died when my father was three years old. Soon after, father was taken by a paternal uncle and reared. This uncle was an Episcopal Minister, and lived at Colwin's Manor, or Caldwin's Manor, on or near the line between New York State and Canada (Caldwell Manor, Quebec). My impression has been that grandfather was a Frenchman, but he may have been a sailor from New England married to a Frenchwoman. I am clear as to the information he gave me about being reared by an uncle who was an Episcopal minister. I don't remember grandfather's name but I think it was Louis, the French way of spelling Lewis, and that makes me think he was a Frenchman. The grand uncle's name at Coldwin Manor I think was William. Father had two brothers (no sisters) and their names were William and Henry. My impression is that William is the oldest. I have heard father say that William settled at New York City, perhaps about 1830-35 and finally became a butcher. I never saw him and I don't think father ever saw him. Henry visited us once when we lived in Burlington, Vt., about 1847. He was a fine, clean looking man, unmarried, and in the employ of the American Fur Company, and had spent many years in the fur trade on the waters of the upper Missouri river among the Indians. What became of him or William, I know not. Mary Patch, my mother, was a daughter of Sam Patch (not the jumper). She was born at Windsor, Vt. Her brother became a famous physician at Derby, Vt. The patches originally came from Connecticut. I knew Dr. Lewis Patch. He had a brother Linus who at manhood went to the West Indies and was never more heard of. Hereinafter cited as Manning Fam.
