• Nicholas was in Salem, Massachusetts as early as 1662. He was the first of his family to come to New England, and at the time would have been a minor. By trade he was a gunsmith, and was called one as late as 1709. He was also involved in other private enterprises, and held both military and civil offices. He was a Captain in King Philip's War, was selectman at Salem, Justice of the Peace, collector and judge of the Inferior Court in Maine. Nicholas is first found in Salem when he witnessed a deed on 3 Oct 1662. In 1679 he returned to England as "undertaker" on the vessel on which his mother and siblings would sail to New England. In the same year he was presented at court in Salem for wearing periwigs, an indulgence in fashionable adornment that was frowned upon by the Puritans. He then appears to be absent from Salem, as on 11 May 1681, Elizabeth, wife of Nicholas Manning petitioned the court there to secure possession of Nicholas's estate for her maintenance and support. The estate was divided on 8 Jun 1681, and in the court papers, Elizabeth is called a "widow". Nicholas was presumed deceased, he, however, was not, and it is later believed that he had gone to New York. In 1684 he is found in New Dartmouth, Maine. On 8 Jun 1686 he was appointed marshall at Falmouth, Maine. He was appointed Justice of the Peace on 8 Sep 1686, and as sub-collector and surveyor on 17 Sep 1686. On 11 Jul 1688 he was appointed Judge of the Inferior Court of Cornwall Co. (at the time a county which comprised all of the territory east of the Kennebec River in Maine). After the collapse of the Maine Colony (due to an overflow of the Civil wars back in England, which evedently landed Nicholas in prison for some time, and to stepped-up Indian hostilities) Nicholas is found in Boston where he was taxed in 1694 and 1696. He was still in Boston in Mar 1697 when he is named in a law suit concerning a quantity of wood. In about 1701 he moved to Staten Island, New York. On 30 Apr 1702, John Gonzales petioned to the New York Assembly for relief against Nicholas Manning who Gonzales claimed "dispossessed" him of a lot of land on Staten Island. On 26 Aug 1708, a return was made by Joseph Billings, Jacques Pulyon and Nicholas Manning of a survey of the south division, Richmond Co. (Staten Island). On 30 Jun 1709, while residing in Staten Island, Nicholas sold land in Salem, Mass. to his brother, Jacob Manning. Nicholas was living on Staten Island on 4 Dec 1719, when together with his wife Mary, he sold to his son John of Boston, certain rights to land in New Dartmouth. He was aged 77 in 1721 when he wrote a letter to his son John in Boston. At this time Nicholas' residence was given as Long Island.⁵
• John? Manning may be a descendant of Nicholas Manning. Although only one of his children is known with certainty (son John, who lived in Massachusetts and did not leave descendants) it is probable that Capt. Nicholas Manning had other children by his second wife, Mary Mason, possibly born on Staten Island. In 1768, a Thomas Manning of Moreland, Philadelphia Co., Pennsylvania, stating that he was an heir to the late John Mason (father of Nicholas's second wife, Mary Mason) petitioned the court at Suffolk Co., Massachusetts Bay seeking title to John Mason's land in Sheepscot, Lincoln Co. (now Maine). The petition, was signed by Attorney Nathaniel FitzRandolph acting as a substitute for Ephraim Manning, Attorney for Thomas Manning. Ephraim Manning, and the FitzRandolph family are in turn tied to the family and descendants of one Jeffrey Manning of New Jersey, who was originally in Massachusetts, and was an early settler of the area around Princeton, New Jersey. The FitzRandolph family and Capt. Nicholas Manning were both prominant in the settlement of the Sheepscot area of Maine. No doubt there is a connection between the families of Jeffrey Manning (MA to NJ) and Capt. Nicholas Manning (MA to ME to NY), and it is possible that the Manning family found in Dutchess County, New York during the second half of the 18th century will find their origins in one of these two lines.
• Of the known children of Nicholas by his first wife, only John survived to adulthood, however, there are no known descendants through him. Although no children by his second wife have been discovered, there is some evidence to suggest that some did exist. At the time of their marriage the couple was young enough to have children. In 1767 a Thomas Manning of Moreland, Pennsylvania laid claim to land at Sheepscot, Maine as an heir to John Mason, who would be Nicholas Manning's father-in-law. This leaves open the possibility that Nicholas Manning did have descendants and a line that survives today.

Richard Manning¹

• Several members of Richard's family settled at Salem, Massachusetts during the period of 1662 to 1679, and lines of descent flow from four brothers, sons of Richard. Eldest son, Nicholas was for a time at Salem and then at New Dartmouth, Maine. Afterwards he went to New York and resided on Staten Island and Long Island. He was married twice, and is known to have only one surviving child, John, who settled at Boston and remained there for life. It is not known if John had children, and later descendants of Nicholas, if any, are considered a "lost branch." The second brother, Jacob Manning, was the only brother to make Salem his perminant home. His son Samuel moved to Oxford, Mass. where he died, and descendants continued on to New Salem and Charlton, Mass., and eventually to Coventry, Chenango Co., New York, from where descendants migrated to Cattaraugus Co., New York, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and west. Youngest son, Thomas Manning, left Salem for Ipswich, Mass., and descendants did not move far past Essex Co., Massachusetts. A fourth brother did not seem to have come to New England at all. The three in New England, Nicholas, Jacob, and Thomas were all gunsmiths by trade, an occupation that later was more commonly called, blacksmith. Descendants of Thomas Manning also included a large number of physicians.³

He was Captain of the Militia in Aug 1757 during the French & Indian War, and went as the head of his company to the relief of Fort William Henry. His company is called a troop of horse, and was a part of Capt. Daniel Appleton's Regiment.⁴

• He is believed to be the the Revolutionary soldier, Richard Manning, who enlisted 17 May 1780 under Cpat. Jedediah Goodwin, and Col. Joseph Prime, and served for eight months. Richard Manning settled early on in Salem and was a blacksmith, but he later established the Salem and Boston Stage Company. Some of his children shared in this business. On 23 May 1795 he purchased, for $300, land in Raymond, Cumberland Co., Maine from Samuel Symonds of Danvers. The following month he made two more purchases of land in Raymond, and with additional purchases, eventually became the owner of a fairly substantial tract of land there. The property was near Sebago Lake, and soon Richard's son, Richard, moved there to oversee their business interests.⁵

• Samuel lived at Salem until about 1748 when he moved to Oxford, Worcester Co. Massachusetts, and remained there for the remainder of his life. At Salem he was a gunsmith, and at Oxford a farmer, although he was called a gunsmith there as late as 1756. In 1728 he bought a houselot from William Tosier in Salem. In 1735 he was one of five partners in a company to "manufacture bread and biscuit" for ships, but sold his interest in 1740. At Salem he was elected steward for the town pasture in 1729; constable in 1732; and tithingman in 1729 and 1735. At Oxford he was selectman in 1756, and moderator of town meetings in 1759 and 1761-62. He acquired the grant received by his uncle, Capt. Nicholas Manning (for his service in King Philip's War) for land at "Souhegan West," now Amherst, New Hampshire, and in 1735, Samuel drew Lot 53, but never occupied it. In 1742 his name appears on a petition, along with Thomas Proctor, Jr., Samuel King, Ebenezer King, etc. concerning land granted to them earlier in New Salem. They alleged that land was nearly worthless, and were petioning the court for equivalent good land. At Oxford, in 1748, he purchased 46 acres of land from Jonathan Pratt, Jr., and bought a small lot of land from Edward Raymond in 1765. No record of birth or baptism for any of his children has been found, and only two have been identified with any certainty.⁴
• His will was dated on 23 December 1773 he styles himself "Samuel Manning of Oxford in the County of Worcester Gentleman," and names his "three sisters, Katherine, Sarah & Mary"; grandaughter the widow Hannah Weld of Salem; grandaughter Sarah Manning of Salem; grandaughter Elizabeth Manning of Salem; great-grandchildren, Samuel Martin, Matthew Martin, and Robert Martin; grandsons Robert Manning and Samuel Manning.⁵
