  • He married Mary Giddings, daughter of Thomas Giddings and Mary Goodhue, before 1695.3
  • Thomas Manning died on 14 May 1737 at Ipswich, Essex Co., Massachusetts; age 73 years.4
  • Thomas came to Salem, Mass. in 1679 aboard the Hannah and Elizabeth with his widowed mother and siblings. Like his brothers he was a gunsmith. After a few years at Salem, Thomas moved to Ipswich, Essex Co., Massachusetts (about 1685) where he remained for the remainder of his life, and where his descendants have been represented for over 200 years. Thomas was less active in public affairs compared to his brothers, Nicholas and Jacob. Thomas is first mentioned in Ipswich at the town meeting of 10 Feb 1684/85. He purchased land in Ipswich, from the town, on 23 Jan 1694/95. On 16 Jan 1696/97 he acquired by lease, from Stephen Cross, the use of the latter's homestead "one dwelling-house, barn, shop or warehouse with about five acres of land." Thomas is named in many other deeds at Ipswich during the period of 1696 though 1704. He was elected surveyor of highways in 1696-97, 1707, and 1734, hayward in 1702, tithingman in 1722. In 1732 he was appointed by the proper Court as one of the two guardians of an aged citizen of Salem whose intellect was impaired.5,6
  • His will was dated on 2 April 1737 in which he calls himself, "Thomas Manning of Ipswich in the County of Essex in the province of Massachusetts Bay in New England, yeoman," and mentions his wife, Mary, and children, Richard, John, Joseph, and Anstice Dane, and grandchildren, Mary Emerson, and Anstice Emerson, and his brother, Jacob Manning who he name as overseer. He appoints his wife, Mary as executrix, son Richard, executor. Throughout the document, his surname was spelled as "Maning."7

Francis Manny1

b. 6 April 1707
  • Francis Manny was baptized on 6 April 1707 at Reformed Dutch Church, New York City, New York, sponsors Jeremiah Maney, Elizabeth Mainerd.2
  • He married first at Reformed Dutch Church, New York City, New York, on 15 June 1734 Anna Kip, daughter of Pieter Kip and Immetje van Dyck, (int. 15 Jun 1734).3
  • Francis Manny married second in 1749 Magdaliene Aymar, daughter of Jean Aymar and Franciose Belon.4
  • Also known as Frausoa Manney (baptism record).2
  • Francis Manny, son of James Manny, deceased, is named in his grandfather, Francis Vincent's will dated 11 Sep 1732.5
  • Francis Many signed the petition, dated 12 Sep 1737, demanding the removal of the sheriff of New York.4
  • Francis Manny was admitted freeman on 31 March 1747 at New York City, New York, called Francis Manny, shipwright.4
  • Francis Many was appointed timber inspector in New York City in 1770.6
  • There is a question regarding the placement of the first cousins, Francis Many, son of Jacque, and Francis Many, son of Jeremie. Francis, the son of Jacque, actually named his first son Jeremiah, and did not name a son James, while Francis, the son of Jeremie, named a son James, but did not name a son Jeremiah. Following the conventional naming paterns of the day, it would seem more probable that the two cousins named Francis Many should actually be switched in their placement. The current placement is based upon that which appeared in the written ancestry of the Aymar family (1903). Kenneth Schoonmaker in Many Families Named Magny...(1:10-11) points out this conundrum and adds that family tradition has promoted the current placement, which is also backed up by the marriages of brother and sister, Francis and Anna Magdalena to Miranda siblings, in Philadelphia, in successive years (Francis Many, son of Jacque is not known to have had a sister named Anna Magdalena, although if one is found that would certainly boost the argument that the two Francises are presently placed incorrectly). This matter should not be considered closed.
