  • Although by terms of his father's 1712 will, Cornelius was given, along with his brother Jan, the Kijkuit Farm and land in Bushwick it is probable that he never acquired title to these properties, since his older brother, Jan, was awarded their father's estate as eldest son. The Turtle Bay farm and New Jersey property were inherited by his mother, may have come into Cornelius's possession, although in 1750, sons of his brother Jan settled at New Jersey at or near where his mother's property would have been.2

  • Jan and his family lived at Kijkuik Farm. His wife, Elizabeth Praa, inherited considerable lands in Bushwick, much of which would become the northern portion of the town, later known as Greenpoint. Jan bought an additional 80 acres from his father-in-law, Peter Praa in 1727 (part of the lands Peter Praa had purchased of the grandsons of Dirck Volkertsen in 1718/19). Jan Meserole became the largest land owner in Bushwick.3
  • His will was dated on 5 February 1756 proved 24 Dec 1756, names his ten children in order, and his wife Elizabeth, deceased. Executors were Frans Titus, Volkert Volkertsen, and Abraham Schenck. Witnessed by Abraham Liquire, Abraham Chussoner (Verschuur), and Abraham Van der Voort.3

  • Jan Meserole was living in Manheim, Germany, when in 1663, he immigrated with his wife and an infant son to New Amsterdam, sailing on the ship Spotted Crow. Jan and his wife became members of the Dutch Church in Brooklyn on 25 Dec 1663 with letters from Manheim. He bought a farm in New Utrecht in 1667, then removed to a farm in Bushwick with frontage on the East River. The property was known as Kijkuit Farm and contained about 128 acres (1683 rate list at Bushwick). It is recorded in 1706 as containing 170 acres of improved land then in a fence.1

  • Jan and his family lived on his father's farm in Bushwick for several years then removed to his own farm at Turtle Bay on Manhattan Island in about 1707. He is recorded on the Bushwick rate list in 1683 as Jan Miserol "the younger". He took the oath of allegiance at Bushwick as Jan Miserol "junior", inwhich he stated that he had been in the country for twenty years. He is the John Serol named as a freeholder in the Dongan patent granted to the town of Bushwick in 1687. He is on the 1698 census at Bushwick Jan Miserol, junior, a Frenchman, having a wife, five children, and three slaves. He is recorded as John Meseroll in 1706 with 170 acres of improved lands, fenced in, in Bushwick (his father's Kijkuit Farm).1
  • He witnessed the baptism of Maria Gancel , daughter of Jan Gancel and Judick, on 9 May 1698 at Old First Dutch Reformed Church, Breuckelen (Brooklyn), Kings Co., Long Island, New York, (witnesses Jan Miserol de Jonghe, Marretje, his wife).3
  • Jan Meserole witnessed the baptism of Maritie de Gree , daughter of Michael de Gree and Catherine LaForge, on 18 January 1702 at Old First Dutch Reformed Church, Breuckelen (Brooklyn), Kings Co., Long Island, New York, (witnesses Jan Miserol, Marrytje, his wife).4
  • Jan Meserole witnessed the baptism of Jacobus Debevoise , son of Carel Debevoise and Margarietje Meserole, on 10 March 1709 at Old First Dutch Reformed Church, Breuckelen (Brooklyn), Kings Co., Long Island, New York, (witnesses Jan Miserol, Marytje, his wife).5
  • His will was dated on 10 October 1712 proved 16 Dec 1712, leaves to his wife Mary, his Turtle Bay Farm, and a piece of land lying in New Brunswick, New Jersey, between John Prices' land and France Titus' land containing about 45 acres. To his sons John and Cornelius he leaves land at Bushwick (the Kijkuit Farm, which apparently his mother held title to). The sons also received a piece of meadow at Bushwick, about 10 acres. He also names his daughters, Margaret Devow, Deborah Cotts, and Jane Miserole.1

  • Fred H. Metzger received a common school education, and having a talent for vocal music, attended a singing school and received instruction which soon enabled him to teach. When he was old enough he was permitted to work the farm along side his father, being allowed to have for his own whatever he could make of it. He soon learned to graft trees, and developed into what would become a very profitable business. He was employed by farmers and nurseryman in the surrounding area and maintained the business until his father's death when he formed a partnership with his brother George and operated the old homestead, in addition to which they ran a threshing machine and sold farm implements. They were the first to introduce the steam thresher to Seneca County, and they are also credited with selling the first fertilizer in the community. In 1895 he still held 35 acres of land which he operated in connection with selling farm machinery.2

Frederick was the first to introduce the steam thresher to the farmers of Seneca County, and is said to have been the first to sell commercial fertilizer in the area.
