Pierre Montras1,2
b. circa 1660, d. before 13 June 1703
- Pierre Montras was probably born circa 1660 at France.1
- He married Margaret Davids, daughter of Jean David and Ester Vincent, circa 1688.1
- Pierre Montras died before 13 June 1703.1
- Also known as Pierre Montross.1
- Also known as Peter Montross.2
- Pierre Montras is the progenitor of the Montross family in America. He was a Catholic and came to Montreal from France in about 1680. It is possible that he is the man named, "Montrouse" (no first name given) who was listed as a carpenter in Fort Frontenac (located at present day Kingston, Ontario) on 14 Aug 1684. No record of either Pierre Montras or a man named Montrouse, is found in the Montreal church records of this time. Pierre, as well as the family of Jean Davids (Pierre's future father-in-law) appear to have come to Kingston (then called Wiltwyck) in Ulster County, New York about 1687. Before 24 Oct 1695 he relocated his family to Newtown on Long Island.
Pierre Montras/Montross and his descendants are covered by John Wilson Taylor in Montross: A Family History..., published in 1958.3 - The greatest number of descendants of Pierre Montross bearing the name, MONTROSS, are not descended through his sons, but through his daughter, Margaret, who's husband, Harmen Jansen, adopted the Montross surname. See John Wilson Taylor, "Origin of the Montross Family of New York," NYGBR 87 (1956):69-76 for an account of Pierre Montoss' family.2
