William Montross1

b. circa 1831
  • William Montross was born circa 1831 at Hempstead, Queens Co., New York.2
  • Another source says William Montross was born in December 1838 (1900 census).3
  • He appeared on the census on 2 June 1900 at Brooklyn, Kings Co., New York, residing at 950 Kent Ave., called William Montross, age given as 61, born Dec 1838 in New York. Both parents born in New York. A pilot, and a widower. In the household is Annie Tellison, age 55, housekeeper, a widow, born May 1845 in New York.3
  • William is covered in Montross: A Family History (1958) on pages 255-256: "William was Captain of a ferry boat. The New York census of 1892 lists him as a pilot, age 60, living in the 7th Ward of Brooklyn with a wife, Mary A., aged 62. He died intestate at his residence, a brownstone house at 950 Kent Ave., Brooklyn.
Administration papers were granted 25 Feb 1902 to his first cousin, Marletta Montross, daughter of his father's brother Griffin, and to Marletta's son-in-law, John E. Muchmore. The real estate was estimated to be worth $3000 and the personal property $350. Marletta died in 1903 and John Muchmore died soon afterwards, without selling the estate. Fanny G. Montross, daughter of Griffin's son Edward, then brought a suit for partition of the real estate, no personal property being found. Several years were spent in tracing those who had an interest in the property. If complete, the list would include all the living descendants of William's paternal grandfather Joseph Montross and of his maternal grandfather Elias Brower. Fanny's attorney succeeded in finding 127 who were living in 1908.
William's house which was occupied by a caretaker after his death, possibly his housekeeper, was sold at public sale 27 Oct 1908 for $2400. Past due taxes and interest amounted to about $420; expenses of the partition suit, disbursements, referee's fees, etc. amounted to about $1500, which left $480 to be divided amoung 127 heirs. We visited a number of persons who participated in the division, some of who received as much as $5. One heir was assigned 75 cents but did not go to Brooklyn to collect it. Of the 127 heirs, we identifed 30 as descendants of Joseph Montross. One who was omitted was Malisa Montross, the actress "Kate Montross", who had been disowned by her family because she went on stage. The remaining heirs were apparently descendants of William's maternal grandfather, Elias Brower."4
