Aeltje Bennet1,2

b. 28 October 1722
  • Aeltje Bennet was baptized on 28 October 1722 at Reformed Dutch Church of Port Richmond, Staten Island, (Richmond Co.), New York, sponsors Philippe Cazier, Catharina Hooghland.3
  • She probably married Christoffer Van Pelt on 2 December 1751 at New Jersey (date of lic.).4,5
  • Also known as Artilly Bennit.5
  • Aeltje Bennet witnessed the baptism of Aaltye Van Pelt , daughter of Alexander Van Pelt and Jannetje Heyer, on 10 August 1760 at Reformed Dutch Congregations, Freehold and Middletown, Monmouth Co., New Jersey, (witness: Aaltye Bennit, wife of (___) V. Pelt).6
  • Ledley (NYGBR 95:25) states that Aeltje married, as her first husband, Jan/John Merrill. Evidence for this marriage is lacking and is more likely that Aeltje was married only once, to Christopher Van Pelt. The Aeltje Bennet who did marry Jan/John Merrill was more likely the daughter of Jan Willemse Bennet and his third wife, Antje Van Sicklen.

Aeltje Bennet1

b. circa 1722
  • Aeltje Bennet was named in her father's will dated on 6 May 1743.4
  • She is probably the Aeltje Bennet who married Jan/John Merrill. Ledley (NYGBR 95:25, #235 ) claims that the Aeltje Bennet who married Jan Merrill was a daughter of Jacob Bennet and Elizabeth Brouwer, and she later married Christopher Van Pelt. That claim does not appear to be likely, and the sponsors for the baptism of Aeltje's first child, Jan Merrill, would support the case for Aeltje, the daughter of Jan Willemse Bennet, as the wife of Jan/John Merrill. Aeltje then married, secondly, Pieter Haughwout.
