Jan Roeloffse1

d. 2 May 1690
  • Jan Roeloffse was born at possibly Naerden, Gooliland, North Holland.
  • He married Baefje Pieters at Schenectady, New York, between 1672 and 1679.2
  • Jan Roeloffse died on 2 May 1690 at Schenectady, New York; killed in the Indian massacre.2
  • Also known as Roelofse de Goyer.2
  • Styled "Jan Roelofse de Goyer," at the time of his marriage to Baefje Pieters. He had lived in Albany prior to moving to Schenectady about 1670. Hoffman suggests he came from Gooliland in North Holland, and identifies him with Jan Roelofse from Naerden in Gooliland. Earlier researchers, such as Pearson, and others, incorrectly identified this Jan Roelofse with the Jan Roeloffse born about 1633, a son of Anneke Jans. This Jan Roelofse de Goyer died in the Indian massacre of Schenectady on 2 May 1690.
He would have married Baefje Pieters well prior to 1 Apr 1679, when they appear in the Court Minutes of Albany, where Baefje says that, "a seperation of bed and board has taken place at Schenectady between herself and her husband, Jan Roelofse, as it is not possible for her to live any longer with him." Then on 5 Dec 1682, Jan de Goyer signs a bond in which he promises to live in a Christian and decent manner with his wife, and he shall not maltreat her anymore, "nor hereafter give her any occasion to complain about me if she does not give me any occasion to do so. Also that I shall avoid drunkenness and lead a sober and decent life as a Christian man should."2
