Geertruy Bennet1

b. 9 January 1698, d. before 17 December 1779
  • Geertruy Bennet was born at Brooklyn, Kings Co., Long Island, New York.3
  • She was baptized on 9 January 1698 at Reformed Protestant Dutch Church, Flatbush, Kings Co., Long Island, New York, sponsors Pieter Wynantse, Neeltie Bennet.4
  • She married with banns published on 26 April 1718 at Reformed Protestant Dutch Church, Flatbush, Kings Co., Long Island, New York, Teunis Van Pelt, son of Wouter Teunissen Van Pelt and Maria Jansen Schaers.3
  • Geertruy Bennet probably died before 17 December 1779 (not mentioned in her husband's will).5
  • Also known as Gertrude Bennet.6
  • She was a member of the at Reformed Dutch Congregations, Freehold and Middletown, Monmouth Co., New Jersey, on 23 August 1731 "at Middeltown." Geertruy Bennit, wife of Teunis Van Pelt.7
  • She witnessed the baptism of Marritje Pieters , daughter of Gerbrant Pieters and Antje Bennet, on 28 January 1733 at Reformed Dutch Congregations, Freehold and Middletown, Monmouth Co., New Jersey, (sponsors Teunis Van Pelt and wife).8,9
  • Geertruy Bennet witnessed the baptism of Margrita Bennet , daughter of Willem Bennet and Sarah Sherman, on 20 August 1740 at Reformed Dutch Church, New York City, New York, (sponsors Jacob Bennet, Geertje Bennet, j.d.).10
  • Geertruy Bennet witnessed the baptism of Geertje Hyer , daughter of Peter Hyer and Aeltje Van Pelt, on 24 May 1741 at Reformed Dutch Congregations, Freehold and Middletown, Monmouth Co., New Jersey, (witnesses: Teunis Van Pelt, Geertruid Bennit).11
  • Geertruy Bennet was named in her father's will dated on 6 May 1743.6
  • Ledley in is 1964 account of the Bennet family tries to clarify, but also adds to some confusion regarding cousins Geertruy Bennet and Grietje Bennet. (It first must be noted that the two names are distinct. Geertruy is the Dutch equivalent of the English name Gertrude, and is also phoneticly translated as Charity. Grietje, on the other hand, is the dimunitive for Margriete, or the English, Margaret). In NYGBR 94:111 Ledley states the following when referring to Geertruy, "There is some confusion as to her given name which probably originated with Bergen; he referred to her as Greetje (KCo.:358) and also identified her as a daughter of William Bennet no.21. However, this is impossible since the mother's name is clearly Ge(e)rtruyd in the three baptismal records cited below [meaning those of Wouter, Peter, and Marritje Van Pelt] and William had a daughter Gertrude who died a spinster according to her will. Secondly, both the second son and second daughter were named for their maternal grandparents, which was the Dutch custom, and clearly indicates the parentage of Geertruy." He then assigns her marriage to Teunis Van Pelt and records eight children. However, this is followed a year later in NYGBR 95:159, when he confusingly assigns this same marriage and children (although now numbering nine) to Grietje the daughter of Willem Bennet. The names of the children however, would suggest that the correct spouse of Teunis Van Pelt was Geertruy Bennet, daughter of Jan Bennet and Aeltje Wynants. (His addition of another child in the v.95 account, seems to be a result of his counting John Van Pelt and his wife Jannetje Heyer, and Johannes Van Pelt and his wife Anne Heyer, as two seperate couples, when in fact they would each be the same, i.e. John is Johannes, and Jannetje is Anne).

Geertruyt Bennet1

b. 22 June 1707
  • Ledley (1963) states: "Geography is somewhat against the identification of this Gertrude with the wife of Joost Van Boskerk of Bucks Co., Pa., but she is the only one of that given name in the family who was of the proper age to have been his wife. Although she was getting somewhat far afield from the home territory, all her brothers and sisters seem to have gone their seperate ways. Nor has the identity of her husband been established. From the name of the one son of record, Lawrence, a given name characteristic of the Van Buskirk family, it would be assumed that Joost would be the son of Lawrence. However, in Mr. Richard Schermerhorn, Jr.'s manuscript on the family in the Holland Society Library, there is only one Lawrence in the second generation of the proper age to have been the father. He had a son Joost baptised in 1695 but the latter married Tryntje Martense and by her had a son Lawrence, Jr., who in turn, had a family in Bergen County, N.J. Only in the most unlikely possibility that Joost, son of Lawrence Van Buskirk (no.3 in the manuscript), could have moved to Bucks County as a widower, married again and had a second son Lawrence (having left his first family behind), can such an identification be presently made in this family."2

Ledley states, "no further record after 1702 when she was mentioned in her father's will." She is also #101 in the genealogy, as Ledley adds another daughter, Vytie, who did not exist. The confusion is due to an error in the Flatbush church records which incorrectly recorded Grietje's baptism. In short, "Vytie" is Grietje. At 95:159, Ledley then places Grietje (#100) as the wife of Teunis Van Pelt and assigns nine children to the couple. This is another error as the wife of Teunis Van Pelt was Geertruy Bennet (#93). See 94:111 where Ledley assigns this same family to Geertruy. The correct wife of Teunis Van Pelt, and mother of his children is Geertruy Bennet (#93). • She probably married George Brouwer.
  • Hannah Bennet is said to have married George Brower, son of Dirck Brouwer and Annatie, (but this claim may be in error, as it was more likely that Hannah Bennet married a contemporary George Brower in Kings County).3,4
  • Two different men named George Brower, lived contemporaneously during the late 1700s through the first half of the 1800s, one in Kings County, the other at Hempstead in Queens County. It is not yet certain as to which of the two George Browers was the one who married Hannah Bennet. Ledley (1964) and Eardeley (1923) state that she married the George Brower of Hempstead, however, Hannah's family lived in Kings County.
