John Rose1

b. between 1766 and 1770, d. December 1830
  • John Rose was probably born between 1766 and 1770 in Virginia (as per the 1880 census record of son Solomon) but perhaps in New Jersey or Pennsylvania (estimate of years from age on the 1810 and 1830 U.S. census).
  • He married Dorothy before 1792 possibly earlier, in either Pennsylvania or Virginia.
  • John Rose died in December 1830 at Madison Twp., Pickaway Co., Ohio.2
  • A John Rose appeared on the census in 1790 at Lehigh, Northampton Co., Pennsylvania, with a household of 1 male over 16 and 2 females.3
  • An Anthony Rose is found on the 1790 Federal Census in Forks, Northampton County, Pennsylvania with a household of 1 male over 16 and 1 female. (It is noted that John's eldest son is named Anthony, and while this Anthony in 1790 would not be his son, he may be a relation, possibly a brother, perhaps even a father).4
  • A John Rose appeared on the census in 1800 at Lehigh, Northampton Co., Pennsylvania, with a household of 1 male under 10, 1 male 26-44, 1 male over 45, 2 females under 10, 1 female 26-44, 1 female over 45.5
  • He was found on the tax list at Rockingham Co., Virginia, between 1801 and 1805 Jacob Shaver is taxed on John Rose's former property in 1806.6
  • A John Rose appeared on the census in 1810 at Harrisonburg, Rockingham Co., Virginia, with a household of 3 males under 10, 2 males 10-15, 1 male 16-25, 1 male 26-44, 1 female under 10, 1 female 10-15, 1 female 26-44, 1 female 26-44.7
  • A John Rose appeared on the census in 1820 at Hocking, Fairfield Co., Ohio, with a household of 5 males under 10, 1 male 16-18, 3 males 16-26, 1 male over 45, 2 females 10-16, 1 female 16-26, 1 female over 45.8
  • It is noted that the above entries for the census years 1790 thru 1820 are not confirmed for this John Rose. They do, however, describe the movements of John Rose as per family tradition (Pennsylvania to Virginia to Ohio).
  • He appeared on the census in 1830 at Madison, Pickaway Co., Ohio, as Jn. Rose, with a household of 1 male aged 5-10, 1 male 10-15, 1 male 15-20, 1 male 60-70, 2 females 5-10, 1 female 20-30, 1 female 30-40, 1 female 50-60.9
  • The descedants of John Rose found here, especially through the first three generations, are taken largely from the research and work of Marg Bond who has graciously shared her work for publication on this website.
  • Descendants of John Rose have participated in the Brewer DNA Project (Kit nos. 7689, 9135, 8068, 67034, 64319, 99500).10
  • A previously proposed theory that Elizabeth Rose, cited for fornication in Hunterdon County in 1772, was a possible mother of John Rose has been shown to be unlikely. Further research into the court case has revieled that the father of Elizabeth's child was Jacob Quick, and was not a man named Brewer.11
  • John Brewer and John Rose, each have descendants that appear to be closely related. DNA testing of direct male descendants, carried out through the Brewer DNA Project, has demonstrated that direct descendants of John Rose and John Brewer share a common ancestor within a meaningful genealogical time period. It is apparent that the descendants, through their respective earliest known ancestors, are descended from Jan Brouwer of Flatlands. (See the DNA Analysis page of the Brouwer Genealogy Database website).12
  • Daniel Embody and John Rose, each have descendants that appear to be closely related. DNA testing of direct male descendants, carried out through the Brewer DNA Project, has demonstrated that direct descendants of John Rose and Daniel Embody share a common ancestor within a meaningful genealogical time period. It is apparent that the descendants, through their respective earliest known ancestors, are descended from Jan Brouwer of Flatlands. (See the DNA Analysis page of the Brouwer Genealogy Database website).12
  • Note: The parents of John Rose have not been discovered and presently they are not known.
What is known is that 1) numerous descendants of John Rose are genetic descendants of Jan Brouwer. 2) John Rose, is beleived, to have first appeared in records in Rockingham Co., Va. 3) Persons of New Netherland ancestry found in the area of Rockingham Co., Va., generally made their way there by way of Hunterdon and Somerset Counties, New Jersey, or the counties of Eastern Pennsylvania (Bucks, Northampton, etc.) 4) John's eldest son, Anthony, states on the 1850 census that he was born in Pennsylvania, while younger sons, John, Abram, Isaac and Solomon, give Virginia as their birthplace on the 1850 census.
Presently there is too little information found on John Rose as to make a responsible guess to his parentage. He is a descendant of Jan Brouwer, and most likely though Jan's son, Derck Brouwer.

These descendants carrying the Rose and Embody surnames are clearly very closely related genetically to the descendants of John Brewer (b. 1733 , who married Elsie Dunbar), the patriarch of the JOHN BREWER branch. They show exact 37/37 as well as 36/37 marker matches indicating they are tightly related (very few people achieve this close level of a match) and 35/37 marker matches which also indicates a close relationship.
