After the death of my wife they shall have £200. I leave to my daughter Catarina, £50. Legacies to daughters Marthelina, Phebe, Margaret, and Cornelia. If the expected child is a daughter, she shall have the same as the rest, and her name is to be Elizabeth. I leave to my son John £300, to be put at interest for his support during his life. I makke my wife Elizabeth, and my honored father John Schenck and Captain Charles Duryee, and John Schenck of Bushwick, in Kings County, executors.   • He immigrated to New Netherlands in 1650, and obtained a patent for 23 morgens of land at Flatlands on 19 Jan 1661. On 19 Mar 1674 he bought 200 acres, with buildings, in Amersfoort from the heirs of Govert Loockermans. He took the oath of allegiance at Flatlands in 1698. On 20 Apr 1688 he bought one half of a mill and the island it was on, from a brother. He was a magistrate 1662-1664; a representative at the Hempstead convention in 1665; sherrif of the county in 1685; Justice of the Peace, 1684, 1689 and 1692; Captain of horse in 1690.6

  • He came to New Netherland in 1636 came to Beverwyck in the ship Rensselaerswyck.3
  • Said to be a native of Waterland, Holland, although in 1654 his father resided in Amsterdam, and Jacob was often called Jacob Janse Van Amsterdam. He came to Beverwyck in 1636 aboard the Rensselaerwyck. He was an Indian trader. In 1648 he was arrested by Gov. Peter Stuyvesant on the charge of selling arms and ammunition to the Indians. He was sentenced to five years banishment and confiscation of all property. Some leading citizens interceded and althought the banishment was lifted, he did lose his property.1
  • Presumably from Schermerhoorn, in the province of North Holland; was in Rensselaerswyck in 1650 and perhaps as early as 1648, Jan Barentsz Wemp being credited between those two dates with the price of 12 lb of nails, paid to labbatie and schermerhoorn.4
  • His will was dated on 20 May 1688 Gave to his eldest son Reyer, "my lot on the river side (Albany) where Kleyn de Goyer lived." To wife Jannetie, during her widowhood, the rents and profits of all his real estate, viz., his farm at Schotac, pasture in Albany over against Marten Gerritse (Van Bergen's) Island, two houses and lots in Albany, one over against Isaac Verplanck's, the other where "my son Symon dwells, and my house lot in Schenectady, where I now dwell." In 1700 his executors divided the estate equally among his nine children, to each 6,320 guilders and 4 1/2 stivers. The entire estate amounted to 56,882 guilders.1
