William K. Scudder1

b. 10 July 1798, d. 10 July 1885
  • William K. Scudder was born on 10 July 1798 (g.s., however, the date and month are identical with the date and month of death).1
  • He married Elizabeth Spitzenbarger at Greenbrier Co., Virginia, on 11 April 1835.1
  • William K. Scudder died on 10 July 1885 at near Clintonville, Greenbrier Co., West Virginia.1
  • He was buried at Sunrise Chapel Cemetery, Clintonville, Greenbrier Co., West Virginia.1
  • William K. Scudder was probably born Abraham Kip Scudder this name being in honor of his mother's uncle, Abraham Kip, an important person inher life just prior to her marriage to Capt. William Scudder.
  • He appeared on the census on 16 June 1880 at Meadow Bluff, Greenbrier Co., West Virginia, as William K. Scudder, age 82, born in New York, a widower and farmer. Father born in New Jersey, mother born in New York. With him are his daughter, Sarah Price, age 44, born in Virginia, a widow; and granddaughter, Amelia Price, age 17, born in Virginia.2
  • "Abraham Kip Scudder" is named in his father's will dated 1 Oct 1798 and in a document dated 4 Aug 1810. Sarah Scudder is described as his mother and guardian, and Abraham is described as "Son to William Scudder, deceas'd," in this second document. "Abraham Kip Scudder" apprears in just these two records and is not found in any record afterwards. "William Kip Scudder" does not appear in any record prior to 1810, but does appear afterwards.3,4
  • Circumstancial evidence suggests that William K. Scudder and Abraham Kip Scudder may be one and the same. It is not likely that Sarah Kip and Capt. William Scudder had anymore that three children (baring twins) in the short time they were married. Capt. Scudder's will names a son Abraham Kip Scudder, but not a son William, and does not mention that his wife was pregnant at the time he wrote his will. The 1810 land claim names a son Abraham Kip Scudder as would be expected, since the 1798 will had called him such. William K. Scudder is not mentioned in the land claim. However, after 1810, the name of Abraham Kip Scudder disapears from the record, while the name of William K. Scudder suddenly appears. It is possible that the individual, born as Abraham Kip Scudder, changed his name to William K(ip) Scudder to honor his father after his death.
