- Charts: Adam Brouwer: Descendants Chart
- Daniel was baptized on 7 May 1678 at Reformed Dutch Church, New York City, New York, his parents recorded as Adam Brouwer and Aeltje van der Beek. No sponsors are recorded. [The entry was likely written or later copied in error].3
- Daniel has been traditionally placed as a son of Adam Brouwer and Magdalena Verdon, but his placement in this family is problematic. In past published accounts, Daniel has been treated in the following ways: Bergen (NYG&BR 9:129, 1878) does not include Daniel in the family of Adam Brouwer. Instead he records his presence as a son of "another Adam Brouwer, who married Aeltie Van der Beek," citing the baptism record. Totten (NYG&BR 67:225-228) concludes that Daniel is a son of Adam Brouwer and Magdalena Verdon, and that the original church record was in error when it recorded Aeltie Van der Beek as the mother (she was probably a sponsor, and is a half sister to Magdalena Verdon). Totten explores, but then dismisses the possibility that Daniel could be an illegitimate child of Adam Brouwer and his wife's half-sister, Aeltie Van der Beek, who was married to Dirck Ammerman at the time (and had a child baptised in April 1677). The conclusion that the recording of Aeltie Van der Beek as Daniel's mother in the original Dutch Church records as an error, does seem to be a feasible scenario, and Hoffman (TAG 24:170) simply states that the recording of Aeltje van der Beeck as the mother is, "a mistake," and defers to Totten. The problem with Daniel's placement here is that if he were born in April or May 1678, just before the time he was baptized, it would imply that his mother, Magdalena Verdon was about 51 years old when he was born, which for most women is past the age when childbearing is possible. A number of scenarios could offset this however. Daniel may have been born a few years earlier, and had his baptism delayed, perhaps because his father was away for some time. His mother, Magdalena, may have been born a bit later. She was married in 1645, and the birth date of ca. 1627 shown here presumes a marriage at age eighteen. Although unusual for the time, place and culture, she may have been as much as two years younger, but that still would have her giving birth at age 49, which although not impossible, is improbable. Still, Magdalena may have been older then eighteen when married which would only augment the case that she is not Daniel's mother. The other possibility that exists is that the Adam Brouwer named as father in Daniel's baptism record is Adam's son, Adam, born in May 1662. This, however, would mean that he fathered Daniel at age sixteen, and since the record does not describe Daniel as illegitimate, would imply that Adam married Aeltie Van der Beek in 1661, when he was not yet sixteen, a situation that is not plausible in his time, place and culture. Additionally, there is only one known Aeltie Van der Beek in New Netherlands at this time, and she is not only married to Dirck Ammerman (as mentioned above), but she is also Magdalena Verdon's half sister, and therefore sixteen year old Adam's aunt. There are no further records that can be attributed to this Daniel Brouwer, he is not named in Adam Brouwer's will, and he is not mentioned in the deeds involving all of the other family members regarding the transfer of the mill property to sons Abraham and Nicholas. Presently there is just not enough information in the records to conclusively place Daniel in Adam and Magdalena's family. Although shown here as he traditionally is, I am of the belief that Daniel is NOT a son of Adam and Magdalena. There are two other possible explanations for the errant baptism record. The above mentioned Totten and Hoffman are assuming that the placement of Adam Brouwer as father in the baptism record is correct, but perhaps it is not correct. Perhaps, neither Adam Brouwer nor Aeltje Van der Beek were the parents, but instead were the sponsors for a child named Daniel. The error then being that the parents were left out of the original baptism record. The given name Daniel only appears in descendants of Adam Brouwer through his eldest son Pieter Brouwer. It is possible that this Daniel could be a son of Pieter Brouwer and his wife Petronella Kleyn (there is plenty of room in their family for this couple to have had a son born in May 1678), and that Adam (as grandfather) and Aeltje Van der Beek (as the grandmother's half-sister) stood as sponsors. A second possibility is that Daniel is in fact a son of Adam and Magdalena, but perhaps being born to Magdalena late in her natural reproductive life, was either stillborn or clearly not destined to live for long. He then may have had a hasty baptism with his aunt Aeltje Van der Beek standing in for his mother who may not have been physically able to participate. The fact that he probably died young, and did not leave any known descendants makes the need for a positive identification, less critical, but it is a problem that is still open. (May 2008).4
- Daniel is a possible son of Catherine Van der Beek. And her first husband, Daniel Richaud.4
